2016 Canadian GP

Alright. For some reason I don't have the pre race to this one but we'll make do anyway. (Hindsight note : not an issue because I was SO MUCH CONTENT for this one. Like several videos as well.)

The weather isn't great. 40% chance of rain, there's been showers earlier in the day. Lewis is on pole ahead of Nico and Seb. Then it's Ricciardo, Verstappen, Raikkonen, Valtteri, Massa, Hulkenberg and Alonso.

Formation lap.

As a reminder Lewis is now only 24 points behind Nico.

Oh there's still people on the grid when the cars get back there. Not great. Lewis is pointing towards the inside, as he starts on the wrong side of the track. I never truly realised how close to the starting line the first corner is in Montreal. Just a few metres.

And they're racing.

OH MY GOD. SEB. INSANE START. HE IMMEDIATELY PULLS AHEAD OF LEWIS WHILE NICO AND HIM ARE WHEEL TO WHEEL INTO THE FIRST CORNER. HE TAKES THE LEAD! NICO AND LEWIS TOUCHED IN THE SECOND CORNER! NICO GETS OFF TRACK. HE LOSES PLACES AS A RESULT. Phew. Eventful. Sexy of Seb. Max also made it ahead of Daniel and he's in third position behind Lewis at the end of the lap. P5 is Raikkonen, then Valtteri and Massa, Alonso, Hulkenberg, and Nico is now P10! With DRS, he soon overtakes Alonso for P9. Crofty claims Lewis pushed him wide. I'm unsure about that. Waiting for the replay. Damn Seb's speed at the start is fucking insane. It drives Arrivabene crazy lol. Imo Lewis didn't push Nico wide, he stayed on his line. Magnussen also ran into Nasr btw. Nico is closing on Hulkenberg while Lewis sets the fastest lap. He's gaining on Seb now. But then Seb picks up the pace. Nico missed the chicane and lost time on Hulkenberg.

Lap 10. Seb, Lewis +1.3, Max +6.8, Ricciardo +0.4, Raikkonen +2.9, Valtteri +0.9, Massa +0.9, Hulkenberg +2.4, Nico +1.6, Alonso +4.1. Oh ho, interesting. Max is told not to hold up Daniel. I wonder if he'll comply. Annnd Jenson is stopping off track. His engine is on fire! VSC. Good thing he stopped near marshals, they put the fire out quickly while he jumps out. Seb pits! Just as the VSC ends! They're stacking the cars, Raikkonen is in as well. Seb is out in P4, then. Lewis is still widening the gap to him for now but barely. Then not anymore. Seb is gaining again. I forgot to mention Seb has to pit again anyway apparently they all have to use the softs here for some reason and he went from the ultrasofts to the supersofts so far. He's right behind Daniel now, who's still behind Max. It might slow him down a bit for a minute. It looked to me like Daniel was weaving on the straight a bit but we carry on. He's defending pretty well in the next few corners. Good positioning of the car. But it's not enough. Seb overtakes him even as he locks up. And overtakes Max quickly after. There's another DNF I don't know who, but it's happening in the garages so it doesn't hinder the race. Now Seb is gaining on Lewis really fast.

Lap 20. I'm trying to check the top 10 but twice they showed replays right when the top 4's timings were on screen. Max pits. There we go : Lewis, Seb +8.1, Daniel +6.8, Valtteri +1.9, Massa +5.7, Nico +1.0, Hulkenberg +5.0, Max +2.4, Raikkonen +0.7, and Perez +4.1. Daniel pits. Nico pits. Hulkenberg pits. Hah, Daniel is behind Raikkonen. He's gonna be pissed about that, given he wanted to get ahead of Max. Wait. Seb just gained 2 seconds on Lewis, did he make a mistake? Ted says his German counterparts are incredibly mad at Lewis for the lap 1 touchette, and now everybody is debating, once again, whether it was a foul or not. Again, from what I saw I don't think it was, but the replays weren't great angles. Oh yeah we see now he went wide, that's how Seb got close suddenly. Valtteri pits. Any minute for Lewis now. Nico sets the fastest lap. Yep. It's now. 2.3, good job! Of course Seb is back ahead now, but remember he has to stop again. The gap is 13.1. For now, Seb is still quicker but Lewis must be managing his tyres as well. He's supposed to go to the end on them. 13.5. 13.1. 13.2. 13.

Lap 30. Seb, Lewis +11.9, Verstappen +11.8, Raikkonen +4.9, Ricciardo +0.6, Valtteri +0.7, Nico +2.1, Perez +9.2, Massa +1.1, Hulkenberg +3.4. Seb is vehemently complaining about the backmarkers he has to lap. Perez pits. At the front, the gap is down to 10.6. There's a 4-way battle for P4 between Raikkonen, Daniel +0.3, Valtteri, +0.4, and Nico +0.8. Meanwhile Lewis is still gaining on Seb. 10.2. Raikkonen pits, releasing the others. 9.7. Then Lewis gets slowed down by the backmarkers as well. 9.9. Fastest lap. Valtteri overtook Daniel after he made a mistake. Massa is retiring. And Seb pits! 2.4 stop. Out 7.4 behind Lewis. Nico is attacking Daniel, and we see on the replay he suddenly lost his place to Valtteri because he missed the chicane. Nico overtakes Daniel, who pits, slight mishap, 4.1.

Lap 40. Lewis, Seb +6.7 already, Max +9.9, Valtteri +6.5, Nico +1.8, Raikkonen +15.0, Ricciardo +3.7, Hulkenberg +3.1, Sainz +1.0, and Perez +12.7. Seb is gaining fast. Apparently some people are stopping for a second time, as opposed to the expectations. We're wondering if the Ferrari gamble is gonna work out as the track temperature is falling and tyres are graining. Seb sets the fastest lap. And again. He locked up behind a backmarker though. Aha. Wait a second. Nico, who's almost on Valtteri : "You got to give me more information because of the warning and everything on the steering wheel." The engineer answers : "Copy, the warnings are real." Welp. Max pits suddenly.

Lap 50. Lewis, Seb +5.0, Valtteri +23.8, Nico +6.0, Verstappen +11.3, Raikkonen +3.0, Ricciardo +2.1, Hulkenberg +14.8, Sainz and Alonso are lapped. Nico pits because of a slow right rear puncture, right after he attacked again despite the warnings! Seb is still slowly closing on Lewis. Bit by bit. Daniel attacks Raikkonen but can't make it. 4.5 from Lewis to Seb. Ah but Seb locked up, missed the chicane and lost a chunk of time! Phew. Nico overtakes Raikkonen for P5.

Lap 60, 10 laps to go. Lewis, Seb +5.5, Valtteri +31.2 (very nice podium in sight btw), Max +6.3, Nico +4.2, Raikkonen +4.0, Ricciardo +2.6, Hulkenberg +33.1, Sainz +2.2, and Perez +7.3. Seb locks up again. Nico is all over Max's rear now. Woohoooho Verstappen defends FIERCELY and very well. Lol Alonso is asking if he can stop but they're saying no because they might get a point if something happens to a car ahead. He grunts. Max is still defending. Nico locks up, he loses a bit of time over him. 4 laps to go. The situation at the front has clearly stabilised. Nico is gonna try again… OH! Wtf? He attacks at the end of the straight but his car goes sideways right as he gets ahead and he slides in the run-off area after the chicane! He manages to go away again.

And it's the end of the race!

We get a wonderful Valsewis podium lol can't wait! "Get in there pal, awesome race mate, awesome race!" Bono says. Man the way he's saluting this crowd you'd think it's his home race lol. He's taking his time.

He jumps to his team and they pull him to the other side of the fence. He does a shuffle, shakes Seb's hand, high fives the grid girls (?).

Toto gives credit to their strategist who made the right call. They weren't sure the tyres would survive till the end but it worked out.

Ahhh Seb got to the cool down room and they're just watching the times together.

Val joins them and they barely react.

Lewis says "I enjoyed chasing you down!" with a huge smile. "When you came in I was like???" Breathlessly he says "It was such a bad start, what the hell!" Seb grins "Mine was okay, did you notice?" IAHSGDGEHSZEUEJ THEY'RE SO AAAAAAAH fucking brat omg. Lewis chuckles, they exchange a look, and Seb elbows him.

Lewis repeats his was very bad and then he got to turn 1 and had crazy understeer.

Seb says yeah, tailwind all race. OHHH IS IT THE SEAGULL RACE? Seb interrupts Lewis and asks if he saw them. He says yes, Seb says he avoided them. Is that when you went (???) Lewis asks. I brake for animals, Seb talks over him. That's when you caught up! He adds. I was sleeping at that point, I don't know why, Lewis says. Seb says he looked at the seagulls and locked up.

Suddenly it's like Lewis notices the camera and his face closes off. The conversation dies down.

While they're receiving their trophies Crofty says listening to Seb and Lewis he gets the feeling they enjoyed their battles and "are desperate to race each other on the track at the moment". He's basically writing fanfic. The merc representative on the podium is apparently one of the tallest men in the paddock according to the commentators and when Lewis holds him by the shoulder for a photo he indeeds looks very very smol.

Michael Douglas is interviewing for some reason. Of course Lewis is extremely happy. He asks about the first corner. Lewis starts by thanking everyone who came, bla bla bla Montréal is great. He says he had a very bad start, Seb and Nico got a good run, the tyres were cold, he understeered. He feels very grateful Nico and him didn't damage anything on the cars. And after that it was just trying to chase "this guy" down, who was so quick. He's happy with the car. He says he won his first GP here in 2007. Such a blessing. Seb gets a lot of cheers. Douglas congratulates him for the start and asks what the issue was after that. Seb smiles, "Lewis was a bit too quick, that was the issue." He says they might have struggled a bit because of the wind. He says they committed to a different strategy early on and the plan was to come back but the tyres lasted better than expected so Lewis stayed ahead. In the last question Lewis goes full nostalgia talking about his first win.

Nico is very unhappy. He says Lewis did a "very hard racing manoeuvre" on him. He says he was very pissed in the moment but that's racing and in the end it's his job to make sure next time a battle such as this one comes up he's ahead. The journalist apologises for his language, he seems genuinely surprised. She tells him some words he used can't be used live on TV. "I'll apologise then, you don't have to apologise on my behalf," he says. That's good. He says it's frustrating because they had a good car, Lewis showed the car was worthy of the win.

In RBR's corner Verstappen is happy with his race and Ricciardo is disappointed. Not too happy about Max not moving out of his way but he plays it down. Horner praises Max, points out they had to pit Danny at a bad time because he locked up and got a flat spot. About the team order he says at some point Ricciardo looked quicker but then Max's tyres cleaned up from the graining and it didn't matter anymore basically.

Lewis shows up in the media pen bundled up and with a British flag.

He says his practice start for the formation lap was amazing and he doesn't understand what happened with the race start. He's chuckling about it. Then again the understeer, he was under attack, and the "unfortunate collision… Tap, with Nico".

Then he says it was hunting down Sebastian, they both had really good pace, but Seb made a few mistakes. He himself apart from one time in turn 10 didn't make any mistake so he's very happy. Great strategy, good tyre management, the team made the right calls. He keeps sighing, shrugging, shaking his head with a smile.

He can't believe it went as well as it did. He really enjoyed the race, "smooth". For context Muhammad Ali died shortly before that so when Lewis won he said the famous sentence "fly like a butterfly sting like a bee" and he says the last 10-15 laps Ali was all he could think of. The journalist says "fly like a butterfly, these last few laps–" he interrupts her, "it really felt like that, that's why I was thinking of him." "It felt like I was floating," he adds. "everytime he did a good lap i was able pull another lap in which I'm sure was painful for him," he chuckles, "in terms of like a sting, you know?"

She asks if he was surprised to see him pit when he did. He gets serious. He definitely was. He says his team told him to stay out. He was excited because he thought they had a race on their hands, "I wanted to race him on the track," he says with a hungry smile.

He was worried his tyres were graining but he still made it to lap 25, then he moved to the other tyre and it was "just sweet".

It iiiis the seagull race. They find Lewis again in the paddock. He complains of the cold. He repeats some of the same things he said before. And then, behind his back, we see Seb walking past. A red and white sleeve appears in the frame and reaches for his shoulder.

"He's not braking for animals!" Seb says. "You should give him a hard time because of that."

Simon asks what this is all about, he did hear about seagulls. "2 seagulls, turn one," Seb says. Lewis tilts his head. "I feel like you're using the seagulls, I feel, I feel that they were innocent."

Seb hasn't taken his hands off of him. "Yeah but I'm a racing driver so I have to find some sort of excuse why, why the hell you beat me!" he says, as he grabs him even tighter and shakes him. Seb tells the story while Lewis glares at him with a wide smile. "I have my eyes into turn one, and I saw these… Stupid couple of seagull sitting there, all relaxed!" Lewis interjects. "Hey man it was planned! You know I'm good with animals, right?" he says as he puts his hand on his chest.

"I'm like doctor doolittle I told them to be there and they were there and…" Seb shakes him some more.

Simon says they had their crew check and they couldn't find the images of the seagulls. Genuine surprise in Seb's face while Lewis laughs. "Honestly," he says. "Invisible seagulls," Simon says. "They were white doves," Lewis says bouncing up and down like a boy.

A pause. "Well I don't know, whatever, white birds," Seb says. Lewis laughs. "It wasn't a pigeon, it was a seagull!" Seb protests still. "I could see the beak. I don't know their name but they were there!" He grabs Lewis again. "You saw them as well!"

He nods, Seb shoves him lightly. Simon interrupts, he thinks they might have found the images, but it's not the right ones.

When we get back to them Seb has his own mic. "I will stay here until you find the lap," Seb says. We see the start. But it's still not the right lap. Seb takes time to show off his sponsors on camera "there you go".

Simon asks questions about the Ferrari strategy mistake. "First of all I didn't want to crash your interview I'm sorry," Seb says. "No no no," Lewis answers, "It's good, it's nice! It's nice! You make it easy for me!" Seb goes on to say he'll always defend what they're doing, they have good people. He turns to Lewis : "Did you try to do, would you– honest answer. Were you always going to stay out?" – "No, no, we were going to do a two stop. That was plan… Plan A was doing a two stop as well so." They're constantly talking over one another so it's difficult to transcribe. Seb turns back to Simon and say see, in his shoes, you do the opposite. Aka they went for the two stop so Merc tried the one stop. Lewis approves but then he adds that they were staying out anyway. "Before you decided to go in we were staying out." Seb seems unconvinced. "I'd been told to stay out, so," Lewis continues "I think they'd already decided to go onto another strategy." Seb says with hindsight it's always easy. Lewis cuts him off : "They said plan B and I was like 'the hell is plan B? I don't remember what it is?'" then Simon says Ferrari is faring better and they might be able to chase the Mercedes down. Seb says it's a very ambitious plan but they're going for it. Lewis pretend-boxes him with the flag wrapped around his hand. He adds that 2 years ago they were unbeatable and now they are very close, he smiles and puts his hand on Lewis' shoulder again, shakes him lightly slides his hand down his arm.

"He can definitely feel our breath." Simon changes subject. "In terms of the seagulls…" They are all staring at the screen, Seb points at it "Get the lap! Get the seagulls!" But Simon finished his sentence "... We can't find them." Lewis describes for the nth time when it happened. And here we go. Finally. Everybody exclaims! "Two seagulls, see?" Seb says triumphantly. Lewis is laughing again.

"I had my eyes so deep into the apex," Seb describes with wide gestures. "I locked up!" We see the images again. "Oh my god," Lewis squeals, "They're so far away!" Seb grunts. "Mind the animals! Honestly!" Simon tries to talk but Seb is still processing. "Did you see? They stayed! Can we see that again please?" He's still pointing at the screen. "They stayed there! That's what really annoyed me. They stayed there!" he repeats, his voice high with marvel and astonishment. We see the images again. Lewis comments Seb is locking up way before the seagulls. "Yeah but look, there's a red car coming at, I don't know, a hundred something… They stay there!" he says higher still. "I'm not sure they're very clever, seagulls," Simon says. Lewis chuckles. "Maybe that's why they didn't see you coming." Seb is wild. "If you can catch these two seagulls, you might prove the opposite of what you ever find out in history about seagulls!" he jokes, looking at Simon but his eyes darting to Lewis who is still giggling. "I think I might have to buy you a couple seagulls," he says. "I don't know if they're white seagulls whatever I think you need a couple."

Seb grabs his neck again. "You told me you had some…" he gestures with his hand. Lewis catches on. "One bird did poo on my visor at one stage," he explains to Simon, while Seb laughs. "Is that right?" Simon asks. Seb bows and hands his mic over with two hands. Taps Lewis shoulder. "Thank you, well done man," he says. Seb is gone.

They pick up the interview where they left off before Seb's arrival as they slowly start walking down the paddock. Simon asks about Lewis' homage to Ali, and points to the "boxing glove". Lewis explains someone gave him the flag and he just wrapped it around his hand because he's freezing. Lewis explains Ali has been an inspiration to so many people etc. Explains about the end of the race again. That's it.

In the notebook, Ted says Nico seems increasingly annoyed. "But, you know, what does Rosberg expect? Hamilton. Is. Deadly. Absolutely. Unrelenting. Unrelenting. He takes no prisoners ever in a race car. That's why he's so brilliant, that's why he's such an awesome champion."

Jenson puffs out a breath as Nico settles next to him on the bed, poking him in the chest with his elbow. He ignores Jenson, more interested in whatever he's reading on his Ipad. Jenson turns on his side, lays his head on his hands and just looks at Nico.

He just bought new reading glasses. They were insanely expensive, hand-made from some wood that's currently going extinct in South America. They look a bit ridiculous to Jenson, but Nico always tells him he has no taste for finer things in life. Jenson always replies "I have a taste for you, don't I," and it never fails to make Nico smile just a little bit, in the corner of his mouth, like he can't help himself. He usually rolls his eyes at Jenson, too, but Jenson still counts it as a win.

"Hey babe, I was thinking about something."

Just like Jenson knew would happen, Nico rolls his eyes and looks away from the Ipad, frowning just a tiny bit.

"I told you not to call me babe," he says. Jenson smiles and ignores him.

"Since I'm driving Le Mans this year, you know that means I'm racing again." Nico doesn't acknowledge him, waiting for the punchline. "Well, that also means that technically," he drawls, moving closer to Nico, "you are my wag."

"What." There is no inflection in Nico's voice, and Jenson can't hold his chuckles in.

"Wag. You know, wives and -"

"I know what wag means," Nico interrupts, a frown now firmly on his face. "What the fuck, JB."

"I think it's cute," Jenson says, biting his lip to prevent himself from laughing. "If you come to the race, you can support me and people will ask you about me, and what you're wearing, who you're wearing, and -"

"Shut up," Nico says. "I'm not your wag."

Jenson inclines his head in affectation of thinking. "Bah, then."

"What?" Nico's voice gets shrill when he's annoyed, or when he's being fucked, and it's one of Jenson's favourite sounds in the world, right up there with the V10 engine. "Ba - what?"

"Bah," Jenson says seriously. "Boyfriends and husbands."

They stare at each other for a moment, and it takes all of Jenson's self-control not to start laughing at the bewilderment on Nico's face. He blinks slowly, then turns off his Ipad, putting it on the night cupboard. He takes off his fancy new glasses, too, and puts them in the case carefully. Jenson raises himself on his elbows, and just in time, because Nico's favorite thing to do when he's baffled is to misdirect the conversation. Luckily for Jenson, it's usually misdirection by means of sex.

The kisses they share are familiar, and still they thrill Jenson to his core. Nico climbs into Jenson's lap, and Jenson loves that he's let his hair grow again. He's missed pulling on it properly for years now.

"You're an idiot," Nico mumbles into their kisses, making short work of ridding them both of their shirts. "Yeah," Jenson moans back, "but an idiot with the prettiest wag in any paddock."

"Shut up," Nico repeats, but Jenson sees the blush in his cheeks. Some things don't change, and after all these years, Jenson knows exactly which buttons to push, and how hard, to get the reaction he wants.

He smiles into the kiss. "The absolute prettiest," he repeats, and pulls Nico closer, and kisses him until they both forget what they were talking about, and why it even mattered.

2012 Belgian GP

Disclaimer for this season. It turns out that I only have the footage of the race for a lot of the GPs (no build-up, no post-race content) so there will be way less GIFs unfortunately. I will let you know for each of these reviews if there are GIFs or not. THIS ONE HAS GIFS.

Alright it's round 12 already, post summer break, let's see whose upgrades work.

Apparently the qualifying session was very surprising. Lewis is down in 7th so I guess the McLaren is not getting any better, unfortunately. Oh wait. Jenson is on pole so... I guess the car’s not the issue... Seb is 10th!!! That's not good. Alonso 5th. Perez 4th. Raikkonen 3rd. It's Kobayashi sharing the front row! Surprising indeed.

Ohhh Lewis is stuck between Maldonado and Grosjean 💀 scary lol. Crofty says his co-commentator (didn't hear who it was except it’s not Brundle) called that (Maldonado - Lewis - Grosjean) the "danger zone". Yep. Yep. For sure.

Webber is 12th, with a grid penalty for a gearbox change.

And they're racing!

Oh what, Maldonado jumped so quickly... Is that a false start? It seems like an impossibly quick reaction time. Yeah I went back and he clearly moves ahead of everybody else. Yep. I watched it a third time and he moved before the lights were off.

OH MY GOD HUGE CRASH. Lewis is involved. Oh no. Grosjean came from behind him, pushed him to the side and they made contact. It made him lose control of the car, crash into Grosjean who crashed into a third car and then a Ferrari that hit a fifth car. I can't believe this shit. Fucking Grosjean. I'm gonna have to watch a whole race for what now 😭

There is so much debris it's bad. Safety Car obvi. And now they're talking about Maldonado jumping the start.

Nicole is shaking her head. Lewis is out and walking oh... He's walking very slowly, deliberately, towards Grosjean... A marshal is already trying to hold him back. They're talking.

Alonso is not out of his car, the doctors are there, hunched over him. He's moving. He's getting out now, they are holding him gently. They're talking.

Lewis is walking back in the pitlane holding a piece of his own car. This image makes me extremely sad.

De la Rosa and Kobayashi pit, either they caught some debris or they're part of the other cars that were involved in the crash. Maldonado as well. And Lewis walking in the midst of it all, still with that chrome piece in his hand and his helmet on.

This is so tragic damn. Seriously. He's walking kilometers 😭 he's going straight through the other teams’ boxes and the mechanics standing there are watching him as he goes past them.

I wonder if he'll get in trouble for doing that because I'm pretty sure that's a security concern.

We see the replay. Now the commentators are certain Maldonado jumped the start, it's extremely obvious from the aerial view.

Oh so the third car involved in that accident was Perez, and Grosjean went OVER him and believe me it’s even more terrifying than whatever you’re picturing right now because, let me remind you, it’s pre-halo era.

The fifth car was barely touched, he was very lucky. I still don't know who it was. Oh it's Kobayashi, who completely missed his start. These on-boards are scary. We see Lewis taking his hands off the steering wheel to not break his wrists from the sudden jerking movements. Omg the view from Alonso... He's doing his thing and then BAM Grosjean is on top of his nose. Phew... Seb had to pit, we saw him collecting debris on the replay. Oh no, he actually hasn't, but Kobayashi did. Ah and Perez is out too.

Oh. We see Lewis' on-board again and Crofty says of Grosjean "he doesn't seem spatially aware of his car" which. Devastating and very true.

Ah see, I was right btw, I knew it was bad news for Lewis to find himself behind Maldonado and Grosjean. We see a replay of Lewis getting out of his car and tapping the side of his head essentially telling Grosjean "are you fucking crazy?"

Lee Mackenzie says she talked to McLaren : he is okay but he won't be talking to the media until after the race.

And the Safety Car is in. There's still loads of debris. So Jenson is still in the lead followed by Hulkenberg and Raikkonen. Maldonado has parked his car AND he's under investigation for that jump start. Lol we see a replay from Charlie's cabin and he's shaking is head watching that start.

I'm gonna watch this race on x2 speed because hey.

Alonso is sitting in Ferrari's garage, he looks fine.

OMG Kovalainen spun and almost collected another car spinning back around. Surely that's gonna be a penalty for dangerous driving? (Nope, there was no penalty.) A RedBull has just been overtaken by a Williams...

One third of the race in, Jenson is still comfortably ahead and Seb is making his way up the field.

Now Kovalainen hit Karthikeyan in the pitlane, coming in as he was leaving. Webber is also making his way up the field. Seb is now up in P2. Jenson is still way ahead.

Two thirds of the race in, Jenson is leading, over 14s ahead of Seb and Schumacher. Webber is under investigation for unsafe release as he almost collided with Massa as he left his box while Massa was joining his. Oop. Karthikeyan just crashed. Raikkonen overtook Schumacher for the podium. There are 4 cars all contained within 1 second fighting for that 3rd position. Schumacher took his place back from Raikkonen. Webber is attacking Hulkenberg for 5th. 10 laps left.

Raikkonen overtook Schumacher again, Webber can't get past Hulkenberg. Hulkenberg overtakes Schumacher. Massa is now closing on Webber. Schumacher overtakes Hulkenberg. Hulkenberg overtakes Schumacher who pits anyway. Massa overtakes Webber.

And it's the end of the race!

Jenson wins, followed by Seb and Kovalainen.

Okay so Wikipedia time. About that accident, Grosjean pushed Lewis towards the pitwall, they touched, both lost control of their cars. Grosjean collided with Perez, was thrown in the air, crashed into Alonso and stopped against the outside wall. Lewis crashed into Kobayashi and Alonso after he was hit by Grosjean. Perez lost his rear wing and touched Maldonado which is why he then spun. Kobayashi's sidepod had a hole in it and he found himself in the last place after starting on the frontrow.

Grosjean received a €50'000 fine and a one-race ban (!). Maldonado received TWO 5-place grid penalties, one for the jump start, one for colliding with Glock at some point.

Ah yes! I found Lewis' post race interview on YouTube! It's terrible quality but anyway. He says he doesn't wanna talk about the start (what else do you have to say my man you weren't here for the rest of it...), he believes people saw what happened. Huge congratulations to Jenson, walk in the park for him. It's great to see that they have the pace. He has to try to pull that out of his car in the next race. The journalist says his fans will be happy to see he’s fit and well and is he not too shaken up after the accident? He looks to the side, and quickly puts on a smile, shakes his head and says he's had a lot worse than that. (Lol really? When? Cocky idiot (affectionate)) She asks if he's able to learn anything when he’s out watching the race and he says no, dejectedly. He doesn't elaborate. You can tell he's done with it and doesn't want to talk anymore. The journalist doesn't try to push him. That’s it.

2011 Turkish GP

Round 4.

Quali report. Aha. Seb crashed during practice in the rain. Kobayashi had an engine failure in Q3. Schumacher made it into Q2, thanks to some technical stuff called magic paddle that is "a switch that acts like a sports mode" but he’s still behind Nico who's 3rd. Ferrari has an improved car, Massa is 10th because he made a mistake but Alonso is 5th. Jenson had setup issues and is 6th. Lewis is 4th which means he's on the dirty side of the grid and he doesn't have any new tyres left. He's still optimistic he can do some overtaking on this track. The Redbulls are in the front row AND they have new tyres though, because they only had to do one lap each. Seb is on pole, so clearly no issues with that crash.

Lewis tells again the story of how he couldn't start his car in the last gp. It was really unusual he said. He says he could easily have started questioning what was going on with his car but the guys were all doing what they could so there was no point in doing so, and they all have radios on and the last thing they need is to hear him panicking. Jake recalls at some point the TV team was pushed out of the garage for safety reasons because there was fuel everywhere they were frantically trying to clean with absorbing paper. Lewis smiles, he remembers, he could see two guys standing with fire extinguishers on either side of him. He felt it was time bomb that was about to go off. He didn't have his gloves on so his reflex was to close his visor and then put his hands under his legs, just in case it went up in flames. He chuckles.

They go into details about what went wrong with the engineer who fixed it. Won't transcribe that cause frankly who cares. They talk about him being emotional after winning, he says it felt like it had been a long time. There's been loads of ups and downs in his career, and struggles. It felt like when he'd just started racing (God hearing that in 2022 is hard).

Wow Rosberg did a great start, he's up in p2 immediately while Lewis races Webber for p3 but he keeps it. Lewis attacks again but he goes wide and loses a place instead! Ayayay. He's now 6th behind Jenson, while Alonso has gone up in 4th. Terrible beginning of a race. Lewis is racing Jenson but they don't have the DRS yet. He clearly has good pace though. Meanwhile Schumacher and Petrov touch, Massa goes through. Schumacher is in the pitlane for a new frontwing. Webber overtakes Rosberg with surprising ease thanks to the DRS while things are heating up between the McLaren drivers. Lewis overtakes Jenson but misses the next corner and Jenson gets it back but he then holds the inside line and gets it done again. Alonso is working on Nico. So much action at the front! And it's done with the DRS. Button comes back at Lewis! And he's through! Unbelievable! Massa is also catching up to them both!

We're 10 laps in, the fighting is ongoing. Massa overtakes Lewis who seems to be struggling a bit. But both of them pit immediately. That was the issue then, his tyres were already gone. They're wheel to wheel in the exit lane but Lewis gets out first! They get out in the middle of traffic. That might even be unsafe releases. Well see. Alonso now comes in, as Webber, and Nico who's out in front of Lewis and Massa. Jenson then stops too. Let's see what the standings are now. Seb is leading, followed by Webber, Alonso, Rosberg, Lewis and Massa, Jenson is seventh.

Oh god. One of the journalists said "thinking of Michael it's almost like he doesn't know when to give up" and Brundle said "you mean on his career or on that corner?" Savage. Rude.

Now Lewis overtakes Nico for 4th. Seb is only 3 seconds ahead of Webber btw so it's still very open.

20 laps in Massa overtakes Nico but Nico comes back at him and keeps his spot. Lewis pits again! At this rate he'll be on a 6 stopper lol. Jenson overtakes Nico though and Webber pitted again. So much going on. And Nico also pits. Massa locks up but Alonso is already in the pits so he'll have to wait! Nope, he comes in just behind. Seb comes in from the lead too, he keeps the lead. Webber is p2 and Alonso p3, followed by both McLaren. Then Jenson pits and Lewis gets 4th.

Alonso overtakes Webber for p2 now. We're barely halfway through the race still! Button later overtakes Massa and Lewis pits for the third time. And they botch the stop oh no... They can't take a wheel off. He heads out it's been a 15.6 seconds stop... Terrible terrible disappointment. Alonso pits from p2 for the third time too. He stays second.

We're nearing the end and a Force India has stopped but it's out of the way. Yellow flags. Alonso pits again from second, reacting to Webber's previous pitstop. Nico overtakes Massa for 7th while Lewis is in the pits for his last stop after recovering from earlier in P4. Massa also stops. Lewis out in 5th behind Jenson, who is on a three stopper... Surely he'll overtake him with his fresher tyres? Massa had pitstop issues too! There's 10 laps to go. Lewis asks whether Jenson will stop again. His engineer explains he's on a different strategy, but there will be opportunities at the end as his tyres will be older. Lewis asks about p3, and the answer is it's possible if others have problems.

Now Webber is racing wheel to wheel with Alonso for p3! He's through, but Alonso comes back in the straight. Webber holds tight. But then, third attack in the next corner! He finally creates a bit of space. There's only a few laps left. Lewis is 4th but the gap to Alonso is over 30 seconds so as his engineer said no podium except if there's an issue for one of them. Both Schumacher and Massa overtake Alguersuari at the same time. And Massa forces Schumacher wide! Nico overtakes Jenson for 5th place! So much overtaking phew. Three laps to go. Last lap.

It's the end of the race!

Seb p1, Webber p2, Alonso p3, Lewis p4! Amazing race!

Let's hear from Lewis. Lee Mackenzie starts by asking about the pit stops. He chuckles, he says the pit stops are something they can always improve on but he thinks he lost quite a bit of time trying to get down the outside of Webber at the beginning of the race. He had great pace but he had too much front wing to start off with and that's why he struggled to look after the rear tyres. Trying to get past Jenson, he had so much pace at the time, when he did his tyres were finished which forced him into the four stopper. But he thinks they did a pretty good job getting back up to fourth given the bad pitstop they had. Lee explains that his strategy seems to have been the right one as it worked better than those who had three stops. She asks about the fight with Jenson which was reminiscent of last years’ Turkish gp (when both Redbulls took each other out) everybody was nervous watching it, how was he feeling? He wasn't nervous, he probably felt a bit frustrated he'd lost position. He had a good start he should have been up to third at the beginning of the race. He could have been battling for second in this race. The battle was good, Jenson was fair as always. And he looks forward to the next race!

2010 Monaco GP

Recap + GIFs !

Quali report : Alonso crashed in practice, damaged the chassis and couldn't take part in quali. The 3 new teams were out in Q1. Sutil was also out. Schumacher is 7th, Nico 6th. Not great. They got into each other's way it seems. Lewis is 5th. Jenson was blocked by Massa during his first hot lap and could only manage 8th with the second attempt. Seb is 3rd. Kubica is 2nd. Webber is on pole. Mclaren is struggling with the softer tyres.

Jennifer Lopez is here for some reason.

Jake talks with Lewis about his win in wet Monaco. Jake asks who was the man in the jacket he sprayed with champagne. Lewis laughs "P. Diddy!"

Jake asks what it's like watching one of his most famous wins in a few seconds with music like that (aka the lil montage they did). Lewis says he swears he's not watched a GP ever since he started F1 and misses eating breakfast on Sundays watching them and daydreaming about winning himself. He was extremely satisfied with the win. Plus they finally picked good music for the video! He makes fun of Jake’s taste in music. He says what makes a "Monaco driver" is having the guts to get close to the walls, which is harder than getting close to the grass. One mistake and your race is over. Jake says : “but you say that with a smile on your face”.

Lewis shrugs and smiles and says "yeah cause I enjoy it". They talk about Sterling Moss driving around here in a short sleeve t-shirt in the 50's. Lewis says he was awesome and he was crazy. They tell an anecdote that if he saw a lady with bright pink lipstick while driving he would give her a wave from the car.

Jake says "you don't look at the ladies while you drive" and Lewis says he only looks at one when she's here.

Jake says that’s the right answer and Lewis says “I know!”.

He says people claim he is an aggressive driver but he calls it passion, he drives with his heart. Ew he just called his car his queen that is so cringe. He talks about it using she/her. Eww ew ew. He says when he was sitting on the cockpit of his car in Spain after his puncture he was just thinking what a shame because he had enjoyed the race so much. We see images of him inspecting the tyre right where he stopped and he says a part of the car was rubbing on the tyre and it heated it and that's why it blew up.

Good clean start. Jenson is gone though? Yellow flags? Hulkenberg crashed at the end of the tunnel. Safety Car. It's a terrible place to crash. Alonso pits. Jenson just stopped too, his engine is smoking. He's out. Webber radioes "Charlie if you can hear me" and indicates where he sees debris on the track.

10 laps in, I mean… it's Monaco nothing happens. Webber, Seb, Kubica, Massa, Lewis. Just Alonso trying to overtake people to make up for the fact he missed quali. That might not end well. Lewis pits on lap 18. First of the front-runners to do so. Lewis is ahead of Alonso.

On lap 20 the stops are on-going.

Ouh second Safety Car in lap 32. Barrichello has stopped quite literally in the middle of the track facing the wrong way. Wow he crashed pretty bad actually. His car failed suddenly, he spun, and hit the barriers. He's out and apparently OK though. Lewis is back in 5th btw.

And we're only halfway through. I'm so bored.

Aha, third Safety Car. What now. Drain cover lose at turn 3. Safety Car in at the end of the lap. That was quick.

3 laps from the end, Chandhok and Trulli collide. That's gonna be a Safety Car again, surely? Holy shit. Trulli's car was on top of Chandhok. That's very scary. May I remind you they don't have halos yet? And the Lotus is on fire. But no Safety Car? Ah yep. Here it is. It's probably gonna end that way.

Btw that's 12 DNF over the race, so half the drivers are out now.

And it's the end of the race!

Webber wins from Seb it's another Redbull 1-2. Third is Kubica and Lewis is 5th.

Ah now there's controversy because the rules state that if the race ends when the safety car is deployed it gets into the pit lane at the end of the last lap and the cars are not allowed to overtake after that which Schumacher did. (Later he did get penalised and finished 12th).

Lewis says it was pretty boring lol you can't overtake he just looked after the car but 4 Safety Cars, it's still pretty eventful.
