thinking about the reasons I keep watching bake-off even though the judges and competitors make me want to tear my hair out

a) the contestants continue to be the Beat. Crystelle, Giuseppe, Chigs, George, Jurgen…. And then Sandro and Janusz and Abdul and Syabira… we have no choice but to love

b) I was listening to a podcast and put this down to Mel and Sue rather than anyone still around BUT. I think bake off remains quite unique (among reality shows) in how… non interventionist it is into peoples lives? It doesn’t do the reality tv thing of rooting around in peoples lives for their most intimate problems to tell why they need to Win this. And it also doesn’t feel the need to tell a Comprehensible story about every contestant with an arc that keeps being repeated as nauseum. In an era where the line between personal and tv character feels so increasingly blurred it’s nice to have something where the competitors are introduced by jobs and hobbies and… that’s what we get. The basic format is still really a bulwark against unnecessary drama, and even if I want to slap Paul and Prue sometimes I feel the basic setup is still probably appealing to BME and/or immigrant contestants for precisely this reason. There doesn’t Need to be a story about Being Malaysian or Being Pakistani for them to be there and it’s still really refreshing compared to even the Nicer shows. Contestants can bring matters of their identity and culture into the bakes but from the basic setup they have more control over this

I know nothing about dnd but I feel like this year’s gbbo top 4 would make an incredible group of characters for a campaign

God, I love so many of the bakers on this season of Bake Off just so much! Sometimes I sort of resent the front runners but Jürgen and Giuseppe are just so freaking loveable and humble, and I adore adore adore Chigs, George, Chrystelle, Freya... like all of them, seriously! Such a good season so far! 😊😊😊

I caught up on the last few weeks of GBBO, and here are my general thoughts:

I am so done with Matt Lucas as a host. At this point, I would rather it be Noel by himself

On the other hand, I see so many people get worked up about Paul Hollywood’s ego and like, yes...but also I don’t think it’s gotten any worse than it ever has been?

In fact, I feel like he’s been throwing out handshakes all over the place for the last few seasons??

But, I would like Prue to start her own handshake because it would be so funny (I think she has a sharper sense of humor than Mary, so it would work)

I...was never on board with Jurgen. Like I felt like I was being told to like him rather than it just happening naturally 😬

That said, I was still shocked when he left because I was preparing for the pain of losing one of the others

I’m genuinely annoyed at how much Lizzie grew on me, and I think it was just a tough break that she went on a good week

Chigs and glasses. That is all.

Giuseppe literally said mamma mia as a reaction to something so how I can not love that Italian muppet man who didn’t pack enough clothes for the show?

My roommate was so relieve when George finally left because she’d been complaining about him for a while, but I’ve honestly been pretty chill since Maggie went (and also Freya because there were too many accents happening this season and I couldn’t handle it)

I wanna know if Chigs just googled “why won’t my sugar dome stay up” or if he texted the group chat and Jürgen sends an essay sized text explaining the best ways to make a sugar dome and the flavors you can use and the history of playing with and shaping sugar, and then Crystelle just texts a link to isomalt at the local grocer with no words.

Lizzie goes “Jürgen send it as audio so I can hear your lovely voice,” Giuseppe emphasizes it, so Jürgen sends a 10 minute audio reading his text out loud. Chigs sends a crying emoji in response.

My First Impressions of the GBBO 2021 bakers (most likely will change throughout the run)

Amanda: Eh…I kind of wish she left the tent first.

Chigs: Beautiful bean with amazing facial expressions. But sadly I doubt he will last long.

Crystelle: I’m in love.

Freya: She’s a baby. Some of the hate toward her…you really need to chill. Her vegan takes are interesting.

George: He seems to not be under pressure well.

Giuseppe: Precious bean. Italian baking dad.

Jairzeno: Not much to say. Found that one gay guy in the series.

Jürgen: German baking dad.

Lizzie: Honestly, I found her a bit obnoxious. But I loved her dress.

Maggie: The Grandma in the tent. I just hope those Prue/Maggie jokes stop after the first episode (it’s not like there is a 99.9% look a like match).

Rochica: Not shown enough, under appreciated. I hope we will see more of her in the future.

Tom: Another bean. While I stand by Amanda going first, I understand why he left and wasn’t too upset.

Who is your favorite on the bake off? 💗 imo Chigs is underrated 🥺

(The last one I watched was pastry week so I’m pretty sure I have this weeks to watch? So no spoilers) but Chigs is SO underrated. I was saying that to my other half! Though he always looks confused 😂 his expressions kill me.

I do love Jurgen and Giuseppe, so so much. I wanna give them the biggest of hugs. Jurgen warms my heart so much.

The Great British Bake Off 2021 final review – a Wonderland to behold

Was this a vintage year for The Great British Bake Off (Channel 4)? I’m not sure it will go down as an all-time great, though it was a good, reliable series. It was, however, a strong finale, with strong contestants who were, as we were often reminded, the most evenly matched in Bake Off history. Perfectionist Giuseppe, aesthete Crystelle and self-taught lockdown prodigy Chigs had all shaken the hand of Paul Hollywood twice, and were all crowned star baker twice. It was impossible to tell who was going to win.

It was also hard to root for just one of them, because they all had their charms, teased out further by the segments showing their families at home and the reasons they got into baking in the first place. I am a sucker for a backstory, and these were short, sweet and lovely. If I found Giuseppe’s cool precision a bit predictable during the bulk of the series, the beautiful message from his father wiped all that away, shining a light on where he came from and why he was so good at it. We found out that Chigs’ father died when Chigs was young, leading him to embrace life and opportunities; Crystelle’s baking seems to have given her life focus and meaning. แจกฟรีเครดิต
