You folded your arms, eyeing the crowd around you. Lovers tucked into each others sides as they whispered sweet words and let their eyes reveal how endeared they were. It made you feel lonely. Not that you'd ever let it show in front of the armoured man beside you.
Mando looked uncomfortable in the situation. You knew him well enough, better than a lot of people, but not well enough to know how to approach the topic of 'oh my god we're on a honeymoon planet'. His look made him stand out like a sore thumb, as did your tattered pants and tank top compared to the other people in sundresses and khaki shorts. Gross.
Then your eyes locked in on her. The target. She had been avoiding her debt and had settled down here. You didn't even know they offered permanent housing on getaway planets like these. What did they do when it wasn't wedding season? She made eye contact with you, and you swore under your breath.
"What?" Mando asked, hand reaching for his blaster. You swatted it away quickly, looking away from her and quickly wrapping your hands around his arm. "She's looking" You said through the warm smile you plastered on. "Just don't question me, okay?"
"Oh honey!" You said loudly, "You can't take the dusty armour off for an hour? It's our honeymoon dinner! Maker, my father was right about you!" You said, feigning annoyance as your hands dusted off his armour and fluttered about his shoulders. He froze. "What?" He asked. "Oh don't take that tone with me or you'll be sleeping on the couch!" You huffed, crossing your arms. "I thought I told you not to question me" You hissed under your breath. He just stood there. An overly cheery Bothan made his way to the check in desk in front of you. "Honeymoon suite?" He joked in standard. You just nodded, reattaching yourself to Mando's arm and looking up at him lovingly. That part wasn't too hard to fake. You were actually quite interested in him. And you flirted relentlessly to show it, but he was either daft or just plain uninterested.
"Two beds" Mando said, not bothering to play along with your facade.
"He snores" You added to cover up. Was he so disgusted by you that he couldn't do this? Let people believe you two were together? The Bothan chucked and shook his head, sliding a key over the counter. You thanked him and steered Mando down the hall. He pulled his arm out of your grasp as soon as you two were out of sight. "Hate the contact so much?" You teased, "Or is the sexual tension becoming too much?"
"Shut up"
"I'd be more than happy to take care of that for you. We do have a honeymoon suite all to ourselves" You continued
"Shut up!"
"Why, are you getting flustered, Mando? You know-" You were cut off from your prodding when he covered your mouth with a gloved hand. Despite not being able to see his eyes, you could hear the glare in his voice. "Shut up. Someone else is after her"
"Oh" You said, voice muffled by his hand. "How do you know?" You asked, but it came out more like "hmmvw dvu yvv new?'
"What?" He asked, peeling his hand off. You winked at him,
"Got a thing for that kinda stuff?"
"Maker help me" He groaned, turning away from you. "I saw someone disappear into their room with a FOB on their belt. I would've been able to hear if they were with anyone if you had stopped making fun of me for two minutes"
"Making fun of you? Mando, I'm not-"
"Let's just get this over with. Where's our room?"
You handed him the key and followed behind him dejectedly as he led his way down the corridor. The carpets pattern was so loud and clashed with itself somehow. You felt queasy looking at it. "Remind me to pick a better hotel for our next honeymoon, yeah?" You joked. Mando didn't say anything back. You pouted, was he really mad?
When you two walked in, no words were exchanged. You swung your bag off your shoulder and hurriedly rummaged through it for some clothes that would allow you to fit in. You weren't going to be able to catch the woman without a little bit of anonymity. And muddy, Nevarro-suited clothes made you attention grabbing.
You walked into the bathroom to change, and when you came back out you held a beachy scarf in your hands. Mando stared at you, and you wished you could see his face under that helmet. Was he disgusted by your revealed legs? By your showing collarbones? Was he wondering how he ended up in this situation with such a grotesque creature? Or was he checking you out? Smiling? You hated not knowing.
"Stand still" You told him, reaching up and tying the scarf around him so it hung over his shoulder. He moved robotically to look at it. "Beachy!" You said, smiling at your handiwork. "And it matches my underwear, if you decide you really wanna sell the bit later" You winked. He crossed his arms. You blushed and held your hands up. "Alright, alright. Charm off until we get outside. Then I kind of have to turn it up"
You were right, as soon as you two encountered a couple in the elevator you pressed yourself into Mando's arm. You were surprised when he brought it up to hang lazily on your shoulder, but you took the opportunity to cling to his side and giggle, whispering into his ear in what would probably look to the others as a suggestive way. In reality, you were telling him the plan of action. Grab the target, carbon freeze her, get the hell out of here.
"Excuse me," You finally giggled, "Where do residents usually eat? Me and my husband here were thinking about settling down here. Such a lovely little planet, isn't it?"
The man looked nervously at Mando, but the girl seemed to melt at how excited you seemed. "Oh my god, it is! I heard they like to hang out in that adorable tiki bar down the road. It's a ten minute walk with great views. Uber romantic. Oh, honey, do you think we should try out some of the local places?" She asked her husband. The man spoke quietly to her and she pouted. He was probably mansplaining what a Mandalorian was to her. "But she seems nice" She whispered not-so-quietly, before huffing and crossing her arms.
When the elevator doors opened, the two of them walked in the opposite direction of the tiki bar. He wrapped a possessive arm around her waist, but she still turned around and happily waved goodbye to you and Mando. "She was sweet" You commented. "If we were really on our honeymoon, I would've invited her to join us."
You two stepped out together. "Her husband wouldn't have been very happy about that"
"Yes but that's because you're so handsome and intimidating. If I was your fiancee, I'd want pretty women to stay far away from your allure" You pointed out. Again, you couldn't see him, but he seemed to straighten up in pride. You thought he was handsome, and he was proud of that. You laughed, shoving him lightly. "Don't let that go to your head, I need you calm and collected for this."
"As you wish" He said. You rolled your eyes and grinned. Couldn't he have a conversation like a normal person? But you guessed this was as at ease as he got. As you two made your way out of the hotel, he worked his arm around your waist just like he had seen that man do to his own wife. His beskar was a comfortable weight against your hip, and you found yourself with your arm around his waist as well, smiling up at him as you two walked.
You didn't notice you were away from the crowd of people until you had pretty much talked the entire walk. He hadn't said much, but he had given you plenty of fuel for mindless flirting and teasing. "You know, Mando" You began upon realizing, "I'm beginning to think you're enjoying our little charade"
He stiffened, beginning to release his hold on your waist, but you grabbed his hand before he could. You replaced it on its previous spot firmly, making sure to be serious as you looked up at him. "You don't have to do that, I'm enjoying it"
He tore his hand off of you. "I'm not in the mood for this" He said, frustration coating his voice. "For what?"
"Don't." He warned. You crossed your arms.
"Don't what, Mando? What is 'this'" You said, voice filled with attitude. He had never directly turned you down, and you took that as encouragement. Was he about to admit he had been to cowardly to simply tell you that you weren't his type? "I told you earlier to stop making fun of me" He said.
"Making fun of- You think I'm making fun of you?" You asked, shocked. He didn't respond, just looked away and kept walking as your pace slowed. "Hey!" You called, catching up and grabbing his wrist. "I told you earlier, I'm not making fun of you."
"What are you doing then?"
"Flirting, you idiot! I'm flirting with you" You exclaimed, "Have you really not noticed? This whole time?"
He scoffed and turned away from you. "Let's just get this bounty"
You had to bite your lip to will the tears away. Bounty hunters didn't cry. You bit harder as your body refused to accept this rule. "Fine" You choked out, "I'll take the back entrance." And with that you quickly separated yourself from him, rushing off towards the back of the building. When you got there you couldn't help it, emotions coming out in ugly waves of tears as you furiously wiped them away with the palm of your hand. Why were you crying? He was just a coworker, someone you had flirted with because he was well built and out of your reach. But you had also let hope flicker inside of you. And in such a romantic environment doing all the things you had dreamed of, this had been the worst way you could picture that hope to die.
"Are you alright?" A voice asked, high pitched and kind.
"No" You admitted, not turning around. The hand laid gently on your shoulder. "Husband issues? The visitors get them all the time?"
You smiled and turned around, nodding. "Do you need a hug?" She asked.
"No," you said, "I need a drink. Real ladies carry a flask on them" You joked, reaching to your hip. The girl laughed with you. You shot her with your blaster set to stun. You quickly wiped away whatever remained of your tears, your bounty now lying on the dirty ground of the bars back entrance. You sighed, tucked your blaster back into its holster, and went to go find Mando.
When you found him he was standing with his arms crossed in the shadows, barely noticeable. "I got her" You told him frankly, moving forward before he could respond. You could hear him trailing behind you. "You'll have to carry her. I'll act drunk and we'll say she passed out if anyone asks"
"Okay"
And that was all you said as you trudged back towards the Razor Crest. Until finally he broke the silence and asked, "Have you been crying?"
"Yes" You answered simply. "And I don't want to talk about it"
He sighed, obviously in frustration, but respected your wishes. As soon as you saw the ship come into view, you fastened your pace and walked in without a word. He could handle a carbon freeze by himself, and you wanted to fall asleep in your uncomfortable cot and never wake up. Could a person die of sheer embarrassment? First you confess your feelings, then you cry. Good Maker, you were a wreck.
"Hey" The voice made you jolt up and hit your head on the top of the small space you had turned into a bed. You groaned, "What the fuck, Mando?"
"Can we talk?"
"No. I'm going back to sleep"
"Stop being stubborn" He scolded, sitting down as you gathered your sheets and sat up against the wall. "What do you mean you've been flirting with me?"
You groaned and covered your face with your hands. "You've rejected me already, it's ok, I get the message"
"Rejected?"
You peeked through your fingers. "You know, when you said 'Let's just get this bounty'" You tried your best to impersonate his modulated voice, failing horribly and eliciting a small chuckle from him. "That wasn't.. I thought you were kidding"
"Maker, Mando, I'm not kidding. I never have been. I've been out here laying down hints left and right and you've been walking with blinders on. You have never noticed" You complained. He didn't move or say anything for a second, until he sighed and grabbed one of your hands. "I.. I thought you were just being.. you."
"Is this a rejection?" You asked, eyebrow quirked. He chuckled again, and it was music to your ears. "No" He replied, "It isn't. But I can't give you what you want. I can't give you a honeymoon getaway to a nice planet, I can't give you that much physical affection, or attention, or emotional intelligence. Maker, I can't even give you my face"
"That's okay, I think I have a thing for masks" You joked. You couldn't tell if it helped the mood, so you placed a hand lightly on his helmet. "I don't mind, Mando. I'm more than happy to just keep flirting with you. As long as you flirt back every now and then."
"Okay" He agreed, "I think I can manage that"
You smiled. "Now get back to your bed, pretty boy, or your face will end up being the only thing you have covered"
