#i didn't see these complaints over the lego movies

speaking as someone who really enjoyed Barbie, I just don't think Barbie is deep enough to warrant all the dramatic takes and arguments on it
#like it's a fun movie!#the production design is amazing#i'm all here to gush about the filmmaking and art dept on that film#but I feel like it's getting hyped way beyond what it is#a fun movie that manages to say something and be entertaining despite being another big studio film only made bc it's based on popular IP#like Greta did make something entertaining and worth watching#she did manage to say something and give it personality when so many IP movies are soulless and meaningless#but it's not the big evil manipulative marketing people complain it is#becuase literally.....everything greenlit by studios nowadays is tied to some kind of IP or brand or intended to sell you something#i didn't see these complaints over the lego movies#it's not to blame for launching a big pointless ip franchise bc even if barbie had bombed you KNOW the other mattel movies would have#probably happened bc IP matters way more than what audiences are actually interested in#but it's also not like a revolutionary feminist masterpiece??#it says something yeah but it's not really groundbreaking and it's pretty simple#and it's certainly not like....revolutionary enough for all the negative backlash though we all know something doesn't HAVE#to be truly revolutionary or progressive for that kind of crowd to get all up in arms over the Woke Agenda#it's just like#it is what it is#a movie that would have happened whether competent storytellers and filmmakers got on board or not and at least they made something#worth watching which I can't say of a LOT of IP greenlight decisions#it's jsut like#I enjoyed the movie and it was well made and I'm glad it's doing well but every time I see a new argument about it or take#I just want to be like#it's not that deep lol#that doesn't include just analysis and discussion of the movie#that's different#i mean more discussion like it's bad this movie did well bc it's just an overhyped commercial!!!#anyways got that off my chest lol#i still would have killed to work on set dec for that film

if you had the chance… how would you rewrite the second lego movie? like what stuff would you replace/remove to make it better?
!!!! Ooohh oh boy oh man thank you so much for asking this, lemme get my Writing Cap on
*is now wearing a Jurassic Park hat that is unrelated to writing* Okay! So, as a precursor, The Lego Movie 2 is one of my all time favorite movies, so although I have plenty of things I would change about it, that doesn't mean I don't adore it!
My biggest complaint about The Lego Movie 2 is the way it handled characters. It feels like, in order to tell the story that they wanted to tell, they thought they had to really warp some of their own characters.
Metalbeard and Batman I totally understand happily going into the Apocalypseburg mindset, but I find it really hard to believe that Benny and Unikitty would commit fully. Like... When Emmet builds the "You're Awesome" sign and Benny shakes his head? I don't think he'd do that. Sure, I think Benny would have fun apocalypse-ing it up, but I don't think he'd turn his back completely on Emmet like that. Not Benny. And we don't really see much of Unikitty in Apocalypseburg when she isn't Ultrakatty.
Since the whole thing with them in the Systar System is "They're not brainwashed, they're just happy!" I would definitely have them show some glimmers of their true selves while in Apocalypseburg, like Benny smiling at Emmet's sign before catching Metalbeard's eye and stopping, or Unikitty joining Emmet and Lucy on the house tour and being happy to show their home. Signs that show they're not truly happy with the lives they live now. I mean we already see that with Batman, in how he complains about being a loner with a broken heart. Metalbeard I think is the only one that doesn't need that glimmer of his past self, because honestly he doesn't really change at all. 🤣
I also hate the erasure of GCBC and Lord Business. They just completely disregarded their character arcs. I mean I get it that maybe they didn't have as big of a budget for voice actors, and that's why they didn't bring back Will Farrel for more than a few lines, and didn't have Liam Neeson or Morgan Freeman at all. But they did those guys so, so dirty... They were such an important part of the first movie, I hated seeing them be completely sidelined for this story. Why the heck would the Man Upstairs immediately Peace Out from his favorite possessions the moment he tells his kids they can play???
The way I would handle Business being out of the picture is I'd at LEAST show Business trying to help in the pre-timeskip prologue, trying to get the aliens and Bricksburgers to play nicely. Maybe he gets 'eaten' by one of the aliens, like, The Man Upstairs's attempts to get them to play together fell on deaf ears with his daughter who didn't understand. Then maybe explain after the time skip that Business resigned and retired after that incident, that IRL once Finn and Bianca started completely taking over the basement, The Man Upstairs backed off and just let them have free reign.
And just... Let them have done SOMETHING with Vitruvius or GCBC! Preferably GCBC, I understand more so why Vitruvius wasn't involved, he died. I love everyone's headcanon about how Watevra would help Good Cop to make a full return 😔 I WOULD HAVE WANTED THAT SO BAD
I mean I also hate what they did to Rex. I like my headcanon that explains why it happens, but I'd love to have a confirmation of that so it doesn't feel like a throwaway, or I'd love to change it entirely so Rex doesn't have to disappear. It just felt so stupid in nothing but the context of the movie, analysis aside.
I also would have loved to see more of Mayhem and Watevra's interactions, and more of the Systarians in general, buuut they had a story to tell and that wouldn't have helped drive the plot much.
Anyway yeah those are the main things I would change! Mainly about characters, because I feel like they could have been handled better. But I still love this movie and the characters it introduced. 😊

Today's reroots are a rust yarn fix up on Howleen who's back hair I'd cut a little short when doing a bob (didn't account for the hair re-curling) and a rust and autumn colours mix for GNO Ghoulia (thank-you to @myondolls) was brittle just on the very top of her head where the bulk of the glue was. I really like this combo, brings out the blues not greys of her skin and works with that dramatic lip. At the end of the rr, I brought her frontline forward about 4mm just to soften her face a little (the original had bangs).
Watched the first 3 episodes of boba fett, they're floundering on story but i see a show starring 'old' badasses I've found compelling since my teens like Temuera Morrison and Ming Na Wen... looking even cooler with age, I'm going to give it some leeway with the understanding that this interesting Fett centered found family world is going to get tiny very soon and they'll be sidelined by whatever movie characters or tie ins for the next 5 disney spin offs because disney will blue milk an IP to death, drag out whatever nostalgia horses are left and beat them to dust.
I'm half way through the second season of freemaker adventures too. I like it, I'm impressed how much character they manage to imbue into jokey legos. The way the trio is fleshed out. Roger (that's what i called those droids too: 'the Rogers' kinda like the bobs https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=QdxySJwGYdY ) even occasionally gets to not be 'klutz the clown bot' but a complicated being who's chosen his crew.
Just one complaint, the stories are so compressed with the 20 minute runtime that they overuse sound & musical cues. This show is NOISY, there is probably not even a quarter second of silence not even for comedic effect. Every stormtrooper gets a quick imperial march and a few pew pews etc etc. It's telling me what I can already see on the screen and how to feel. Between fast cuts and the constant tine shifts of musical snippets there's no space for character moments to breathe and make it feel slightly less patronising (yes also for kids because that's something I already didn't like as a kid) . Villain songs = fantastic, villain short themes and riffs used sparcely = great, overuse of bad guy tune starts to feel like a narrator telling us this is a bad guy, very very bad guy, over and over again.
A final note : Star wars folks really really love the wilhelm scream injoke. It's in mando, fett and freemakers in multiple variations (dude recorded a whole bunch).

S I grew up a Star Wars fan. I don't know that I'm a toxic one. I enjoyed the original movies, the toys, the two Ewok films, the Timothy Zahn novels, a bit of the Dark Horse comics.
...I was excited but underwhelmed by the prequel trilogy. Revenge of the Sith was weak sauce.
...I was happy about a return to with new trilogy. ...but generally don't care for those movies. Rise of Skywalker having some fun and interesting stuff, but overall being a mess. Last Jedi I enjoyed right out of the gate, but time has proven me wrong. (I don't own either of those movies...and that's telling right there.)
...I loved Rogue One and I didn't hate Solo.
My complaints have nothing to do with the progressiveness of the new stuff. Got no issue with that. More power to them!
My issue is with returning to the same damn well over and over and over again.
Look, Star Wars is always going to be an unwieldy mess of what's cannon, what's not, where did so and so originate from. It's a series that, for some reason, reaches out and canonizes books, movies, comic books, television shows, lego sets, etc... Everything connects and they need to bring fans from all of it into the fold. And that's an awful decision.
I started to enjoy the Mandalorian, against my better judgement. I didn't bother watching the first season until shortly before the second season. I liked the touches it took keep us thinking about the stories we remembered, but it mainly avoided major connections to the stuff that existed. It was it's own thing by and large and that was fine. I liked it for that.
Season two said "Hey I hear you like Star Wars in your Star Wars..." and crashed in Boba Fett from the original trilogy, threw in Bo Katan from ...idk where, tossed Asohka from idk where, rammed Thrawn's name into the whole thing, and then dropped Luke right in our laps.
Nope. Season 2 sucks balls. It was no longer it's own thing. It's now a thing to introduce other things.
When they introduced the Book of Boba Fett instead of Mandalorian Season 3, I was happy. I don't care about Mandalorian season 3 anymore. It will just be an advertisement for other things.
...But the Book of Boba Fett is a weak story with bad storytelling. Watching it has been a chore. I hate Boba Fett. Their choice to play him as a stupid man with no common sense is annoying as hell. Everything is predictable. EVERYTHING. Except he's the only one who can't seem to see that. He's an old man and not a bad ass. He needs frequent medical attention. They could have done anything and this is what they chose?
BUT WORSE.... Episode 5 comes out,.... Episode 5 of a series called The Book of Boba Fett....and guess who isn't in it at all? Boba Fett. Mentioned briefly at the end. This is coda episode to the Mandalorian. Why? Why the hell would any self respecting story teller allow that to happen? This is the Book of Boba Fett! It's not season 3 of the Mandalorian. If it is (as several friends have tried to explain to me that it is...) THEN SAY THAT! Label the show differently. Whatever.
As much as I don't want to see the Book of Boba Fett, I came to watch that story. I didn't get that story. I got this other thing. Which sucks if you didn't watch The Mandalorian because it makes no sense in the flow of Boba Fett.
...Transversely, people who watch the Mandalorian and don't watch Boba Fett will be confused as hell when they go back to the Mandalorian Season 3. (I know this, because I needed a refresher on the scene with Bib Fortuna and Boba Fett that was part of the Mandalorian Season 2...and WAS NOT recapped on the first episode of the Book of Boba Fett. ...cause that's how they're going to play this. "you watched it already in the other thing. We don't need to recap it."
Star Wars stories CAN exist without all the dipping back and grabbing of characters from other sources. IT CAN.
It can be good stories with characters in the way we remember them and NOT in the way they would grow to be. I don't want to see old man Boba Fett. I want t see Boba Fett.
I'm just tired of this all. I have no interest in what comes next. I'm not wasting an hour of my life on the next episode of the Book of Boba Fett. I'm done. I just don't care anymore.
It's not like I consume all things Star Wars anymore anyway. I haven't watched any of the animated stuff. I don't plan too.
If another Star Wars show comes out...I'm not sure if I'll watch. I want new stories. New characters. ...and if they could do a Star Wars where they don't end up on Tatooine for some or all of the thing, that would be nice.
Frustrated. There's a whole damn galaxy...but let's just use the same characters and places we've been since 1977.

Do you ever think about how in The Owl House, Season 1 Episode 8 "Once Upon a Swap" Luz says that her favorite movie is "Freaky Fraturday"
Which is obviously a parody on "Freaky Friday"
A movie about a mother and daughter who swap bodies. And by the end have a better understanding of one another.
Do you ever stop to wonder hmm. For such an extreme fantasy lover like Luz, why would a movie like that be her favorite? Hmmm...

Okay so I've definitely been suspecting Sasha is the child of divorced parents for some time too but now with the confirmation, I now have a question. Does Sasha live primarily with one parent (my guess being her mom) and not see the other parent (making that her dad) nearly as often. And due to this lack of that certain parental figure in her life, lead her to attaching a strong bond and finding a father figure in a certain toad, hm?

4Kids anime dubs have many flaws and some incredibly baffling decisions but they are still my childhood and I'm incredibly thankful for them. No I'm not completely blinded by nostalgia, I can criticize them and admit the issues but I still love them and it's comforting to go back and watch them. The music, the voices, yes even the sometimes ridiculous and cheesy dub script, it's just good to go back and enjoy it sometimes regardless of the flaws.

Mabel Pines 🤝 Marcy Wu
Young female protagonists considered strange, quirky, and eccentric among their peers. Living through an unreal and even unexplainable experience. Wants to escape the terrible things of the real world. Suddenly learns they're going to be separated from those closest to them and in a panic to try to save that bond, gets manipulated and makes a rash decision involving handing over a powerful item and unintentionally causing catastrophe. Will be endlessly blamed by weirdos online for not being the face of pure calm and reason despite having their life turned upside down.

Free Guy is easily the most fun I've had at a movie in years. It really feels like the movie that Ready Player One and Ralph Breaks the Internet wanted to be, but waaaay better. As a gamer there's a ton of fun references but it didn't feel reliant on the references for humor. The message of art and artistic expression vs corporation goals and the ideas of artificial intelligence and what is "real?" All get touched on enough to make you think but don't go overboard into overly preachy or incomprehensible territory which was nice. I feel like saying Free Guy is combination of Ready Player One, The Matrix, and The Lego Movie. All topped off with Ryan Reynolds and Jodie Comer's excellent acting. And special shout out to how great Lil Rey Howery's character was as well. Loved the chemistry between him and Reynolds, their friendship is so tangible and wonderful.
The world of Free City felt fun and chaotic as if it was a real game world I could jump into. Loved seeing every inch of it that we got. I liked looking for all the little details that made the world feel like a game we could actually see.
I've seen complaints that the second act isn't as compelling due to increased focus on Joe Kerry, Utkarsh Ambudkar, and Taika Waititi, (plus Jodie Comer)'s real life characters but personally I didn't feel that way. I felt rather compelled honestly to see what these characters would do. It's so easy to think we'd all love to stand up and do the right thing even if it means standing alone but can we really put that into actions? It was interesting to me to see how the different characters react when confronted by the guy with all the power and what they ultimately choose to do.
I have to say overall I really enjoyed this movie and there weren't too many moments that made me cringe or feel confused, definitely not a single moment where I was bored. Fun film, great acting, great music, awesome collection of cameos and references, overall a great time.
9.5/10, will ready up again.
