Duster Part 4 - Quadrum 3
Last quadrum the colony had doubled from its original size, so a refresher on our colonists:
- Beatriz Henry, an ex-veterinarian in her 50s who is the resident doctor who suffers with anxiety but is somewhat lazy and hates men. Has recently lost the smallest toe on her left foot;
- Jethro the husky, Henry’s 2-year-old pet dog, lost his tail to a cougar attack;
- Francois ‘Zeiph’ Schmitt, a nerdy ex-engineer in his 50s who prefers the night and isn’t averse to pain. Has recently lost the middle toe on his left foot and currently has muscle parasites;
- Elisabeth Dead, an ex-teacher in her 40s who has been the resident farmer (see: least useless with plants), likes a fist fight. Recently lost her right ear in a fight with a raider;
- An unnamed 7 year-old ibex ram who joined the colony of its own volition. Lost its jaw to a grizzly bear;
- Lisa Hogan, an ex-illegal-joywire-artist in her late 30s who crashed from the sky nearby and was rescued. Not the most skilled, but very nice to look at and uplifting to talk to (if you can stomach an optimist in this situation...);
- Legua Lion, a tribeswoman in her 50s who was the first person to attempt to raid the colony, but was captured and eventually recruited. Very sociable, open to robotics, and seemingly the most skilled person in the entire colony at this point;
- Joel ‘Beryl’ Gemhunter (unclear if this is his original name), an ex-pit fighter in his late 20s, who the colonists rescued after he called for help from nearby. Is not skilled at much, but is very skilled at melee fighting, but he is also currently addicted to the wake-up drug, so he may be unstable...
Let’s see what this quadrum has in store!
It is now Aprimay, the Fall season at their location, and our colonists have finally gotten power online, including a freezer for their perishable goods, making it much less likely that they will run out of food anytime soon, as well as a new crop field for what appears to be corn to mix up the endless meals of rice.
They also seem to be looking ahead to when they will start travelling towards the starship - that there is a muffalo, for those who have never seen one, and they make very good pack animals to carry large amounts long distances. And it’s good to see Beryl - who’s not good at much outside fist-fighting - making himself useful.
7th of Aprimay: there’s another raid, this time from the Combat Society, a self-acknowledged pirate faction on Duster. This woman is the first raider to carry a gun, but it doesn’t look to be in good shape, so perhaps the colonists can survive this attack in their far greater numbers...
Despite having lost an ear in the last raid, Dead is unafraid and charged in to kill the raider, almost single-handedly! Beryl, with his still-injured legs, didn’t even get close.
Dead took a few hits and is quite beaten up, but nothing near so bad as last time. I wonder what her old pupils think of their teacher now!
Not a wholly dark day, though, as Zeiph successfully tamed this unnamed female alpaca, another useful pack animal.
And, to top the day off, they received a distress call from a Combat Society prisoner! A stiletto assassin may sound interesting, but turrets and a mortar would be a formidable challenge for our colonists, whose main aim is to get off this planet alive. I wonder if our colonists are really this foolhardy?
8th of Aprimay and a dry thunderstorm started, striking not far from the base! It wouldn’t take much time for the fire to spread over such a fertile area, burning the crops and potentially getting into the main base, which still has wood in some of its walls...
Fortunately - this time - rain started to fall not long after, putting out all the fires started. Though the colonists looked miserable as it poured down all day, perhaps not realising how much danger they could have been in!
That afternoon, another run-in with the Leobrin of the Brook, Lion’s old tribe and the source of the woman who destroyed toes and an ear last quadrum! Still, the colonists offered this woman safety, and prepared for another fight.
So here’s our 7th colonist! An unusually very religious type, who is apparently entirely unwilling to fight for herself or study. But she is usefully skilled with plants and is another person to work with Zeiph through the night while the others sleep.
These tribespeople may not have much in the way of technology, but they are surprisingly skilled. This one looks dangerous with her mace...
And this one with his knife. The woman appears to be the more important, given that she is the only one to wear clothes. Perhaps their attacks will drop off in winter if they’re this badly prepared for the elements...
Zeiph is downed! Unlucky - it wasn’t clear which way the raiders were going to attack from, and the woman got to Zeiph before Dead could take her down. He’s not dead, just injured so far... (And Beryl is out of the action as he’s struggling with withdrawal symptoms for his Wake-Up addiction)
Both raiders are dead, primarily thanks to Dead herself. Zeiph is alive, with Henry prepared to rescue him. Lion looks to be perhaps disturbed by the deaths of her former tribemates, but it didn’t stop her joining in the defence with the others. Fortunately she’s loyal, she’s proven invaluable for getting things built!
It seems Zeiph was not all that badly hurt by the raider, but remember that he’s still suffering with nasty muscle parasites that are very draining, so it’s not wholly surprising that a few hits knocked him down.
More badly injured was Dead, though she stayed standing and got herself to bed to be fixed up. I suppose once you’ve had your ear destroyed with a mace, a few stab wounds doesn’t feel like much!
With that drama out of the way, the colonists carry on their lives and pick up some new animals over the next few days! First a female muffalo, then a male muffalo and a male alpaca - two couples in total now, enough to breed all the pack animals they need, and can feed. Henry’s old vet experience is certainly coming in useful.
That brief time of peace was broken by Beryl, though, when the withdrawal symptoms got too much and he started smashing up furniture and walls. Addiction is not pretty!
If you or somebody you love is suffering with the effects of Wake-Up addiction, please visit our website where we can help direct you to a specialist on a glitter- or urbworld near you.
And just before the turn of the quadrum, another distress call! And what a conundrum! We’re not sure what an urbworld politician is doing out on Duster, and he’s less dangerously held than the last call, but he’s Lucya’s ex-husband! If you’re stranded on a terrible remote planet, fighting to survive, do you really want to be stuck with your ex-husband as well?
We’ll have to see next quadrum whether they choose to help, as it doesn’t look like the last woman is going to get any from our colonists!
