So, I think 3 weeks might be my sweet spot or something… Honestly I have the intentions of writing every weekend, and then I forget or get too busy. So I say, “Hey, I’ll just write it on Monday.” And then it’s Friday and I’m like….. crap. SO HERE’S THREE WEEKS OF MY LIFE FOR YOU.
HALLOWEEN!!!! You finally get to see my Halloween costume I worked so hard on (if you haven’t already seen it…) I was a Spider Splicer from my favorite video game, Bioshock. I think this is the first time I’ve ever actually worked on a Halloween costume instead of just buying pieces. I had the idea for it sometime during spring semester last year with all the intentions of making it over the summer… but you know me. I started this 3 weeks before Halloween. I have pictures of how I made my hooks, how I made my mask, and of course the finished products and pictures from the theatre Halloween party!
I also finally get to show you my drawing one project I worked so hard on! We had to do a piece inspired by a piece in the gallery. I chose “Birds Using Tools: Woodpecker Finch and New Caledonian Crow” by Daniella Napolitano. Then, I made it my own and put a Bioshock Infinite spin on it (shocker). Instead of a Woodpecker Finch or a New Caledonian Crow, my “bird using tool” was Songbird…who is quite literally made out of metal and is basically a tool himself (not that kind of tool..) It was a lot of fun and hard work to make. I will probably never make a stamp again….and DEFINITELY not one this intricate and difficult. In drawing, we also did some “alternative media” drawings. So pictured below is also Dr. Jack (the first president of Ouachita) made out of leaves, Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers” made with chocolate syrup, and a 2 point perspective house (made with regular media…)
Because it was Halloween, in stage makeup, we got to do blood & gore! We did the basics and learned how to do it, and then we had a project where we had to incorporate food. I declare mine “Death by Jolly Rancher.”
We also had performances for Blood Wedding the first weekend of November. I saw it with my parents on November 1st and it was soooooooooooooooo good. It’s definitely one of my favorite shows we’ve done at Ouachita. Photo credits to Andy Henderson (also check out his website cause he’s just really good at taking pictures). Directed by Drew Hampton; Costume design by Christina Johnson; Actors pictured: Lou Terry, Anna Joie Valdez, Dylan Blackwood, Michael Pere, Michaela Finley, Jess Elliff, Nadalie Gill.
So for my Jane Austen class, during the last class meeting is a kind of “show and tell.” Because I can sew, and because of Dr. Fayards subtle suggestions, I decided it would be a fun idea to put together an 18th C. dress………….. why do I do this to myself. I did this in spite of knowing that I would hardly have any time to do it. I was going to try to do it all over Thanksgiving break, but then I actually thought about it, and thankfully had a free weekend to go home. I got home on Friday at 4 pm and I left to go back to Ouachita at 5:30 pm on Sunday. During the time I was home, I sewed for approximately 24 hours, and got almost the whole gown done. All I have left to do is sew in the lining, punch grommet holes, and then (separate pieces) the stomacher, petticoat, and undergarments. The gown was definitely the hardest part, so the rest should be able to be finished over Thanksgiving break! It’s definitely a very challenging pattern, but it’s giving me some good experience of things I’ve not really done before. I surprisingly only had to rip stitches one or two times, and that was mainly because my tension got off (aka not because I sewed things incorrectly yahooooo). BUT I will leave all the pictures for when I’m completely finished with it…
This weekend was also Battle of the Ravine! If you’ve never heard of BOTR, it’s the football game where we play against that school across the street (aka Henderson). It’s the most intense game, and the whole entire week is dedicated to it. Each night, a different class guards the Tiger (seniors on Monday, juniors on Tuesday, etc.) and each night different clubs have snacks and activities. Chi Mu teamed up with Chi Rho Phi and had cheese dip on junior night. I didn’t actually stay out to guard the tiger, but those who stay awake from 9 pm to 5 am guarding get a free t-shirt! On Saturday, I got to watch the game with my Chi Mu sisters. This was actually the first BOTR that I was in state for since last year I was in Chicago, and the 2 before that, I was away at NATS. A guy gave us free Ouachita cow bells and we even had some little yellow flags to wave around when Henderson got a penalty called on them. That was fun. We started off the game right away with stealing the ball and making a touchdown. For a while it was a little back and forth, but then we kept scoring and they kept fumbling and we eventually won the game 49-42! We were all screaming like crazy. During the halftime show, we got to watch Henderson and our band perform. They both had great shows, but then they all came together on the field and did a Veteran’s Day special of America the Beautiful and each branches song. It was really neat! Ouachita’s win (along with Arkansas Tech’s loss) got us named the GAC champions! We also beat Henderson’s away game winning streak of 31 games, and a (idk how many year) streak of winning BOTR games at home. I take full responsibility for the win. 😉
Now after all that, here’s some random stuff that isn’t really worth a whole entire paragraph. Women’s Chorus got to perform at Hot Springs Baptist Church on Sunday the 29th. It was fun and my mom came to watch us (and take me out to lunch). I bought myself a birthday present and it’s really cool. It’s a Huion drawing tablet, so now I can start learning digital art. It’s really hard to transition between traditional and digital art, but it’s really fun to play around on it and learn!
Yay another blog post :D So, I think 3 weeks might be my sweet spot or something... Honestly I have the intentions of writing every weekend, and then I forget or get too busy.
