My headcanon is that Nicholai was really pissed at Carlos for recruting Jill not because he doubts Jill's ability, but because he knows exactly who she is and is afraid she'll fuck up his traitorous plans and kick his ass

#the big thing is that Nicholai knows immediately that Jill is STARS #which Jill doesn't question but isn't that a little weird?#i also think Nicholai was one of the people scoping Jill out #so when he comes back to the station and Carlos has recruited Jill fuckin Valentine his hackles raise #I think 'Why is she here?' isn't just Nicholai being an ass but also him being defensive #because Nicholai knows Jill is definitely smart and badass enough to completely f*ck up his plans if she gets a hint of what he's doing #like Nicholai just walked in to find the one person who could screw this up for him being a part of their team. His heart probably dropped #to the floor. Amazing job Carlos #so him staring her down and belittling her in front of the others is him measuring her up + him hoping it'll chase her off #and I think he was afraid of exactly this happening too. That Valentine would get tangled up with his plot and become an obstacle #and honestly this is all how I just read his expressions in that scene too #i think he's trying to read her face and then he's pissed that he won't be able to get rid of her easily. Not now that she has Carlos on he #side + she's a business opportunity #and beneath all that aggression he's just very agitated and intimidated that Jill's here and his wheels are turning #ALSO #'can't pull the trigger when it counts' is a dumb red herring I think #all Valentine did was not shoot Murphy immediately #she met him for like 5 seconds she didn't even have time to inspect the wound #(okay ALSO also sidenote I'm pretty sure Nicholai actually did not give a shit whether Murphy was infected or not #he was just taking his chance to kill a loose end without it being too suspicious)#so Nicholai making Jill's whole personality 'can't pull the trigger when it counts' is just a bluff and excuse #Nicholai knows Jill's STARS so he knows that she survived Arklay #so anyway 💅#now I don't think Nicholai realized the extent to which Valentine would become a problem to him and underestimated her #but he knew she'd be a problem nonetheless #back then #jill valentine #Nicholai Zinoviev #nicholai ginovaef #nikolai zinoviev
