Pokemon (Shinsaku Anime) | Ep18 | Friede, Charizard and Captain Pikachu

They will never forget how they first met Pikachu.

Ok yes it's very clear now.

Captain Pikachu can fly. Holy cow I love Cap so much. He might also have Flying Tera Type.

It's so cool how they subtly showed it flying in HZ017 like, he seems to be able to control his air movement with the tail, it's really cool! Cannot gif examples atm but hnnngghgh this all makes me excited for next episode so so so so so much!

I really like the bond between Friede and Lucca as mentor and student. She clearly influenced him a lot and even when she was on a break from work, she still went out of her way to guide him along and give him the push he needed by making him meet Cap. I wonder if she is like this with all her students. I feel like Friede must have left a strong impression on her when she was teaching him.

Either way, I love how Friede genuinely deeply respects Lucca and feels thankful that he got to meet Cap thanks to her, since it set him on his current path. I think it's probably one of the reasons why he accepted taking on the job as a bodyguard to protect Liko, since that would be a way to repay Lucca for what she did for him and he wouldn't turn down a request from her if she really needed help. And the fact that Lucca entrusts her daughter's safety to Friede really speaks of how much trust there is between them. She wouldn't just ask anyone to watch over her. Lucca is properly paying Friede too, so she is not taking him for granted. They did a good job showing Lucca's influence on current events despite her few appearances. I feel like Friede is taking inspiration from her teaching style too, since now he is in the position of being a mentor to Liko and Roy. It's nice that he can guide others after he's been helped too.

Liko's reaction to the whole thing was cute too, I like how the thing that stood out to her the most in Friede's story is that her mom was his teacher. This helps recontextualize things in her mind though. Friede went from "stranger" to "someone my mom hired" and now she knows that he is "my mom's former student". I feel like this helps her get a better sense of her surroundings too. She says it herself too at the end of the episode: that now, she knows why she is with everyone. She knows how meaningful it is that her mom brought Friede and Cap together, which made them start the Rising Volt Tacklers, and eventually led them to her. It wasn't just her grandmother's pendant that brought everyone together, her mom also had a part in it.

Anyway, between Lucca and Liko's grandmother, it's nice to see older women characters with such strong presences in the narrative. I can't wait to meet Liko's grandmother.

Episode 18 of Pokémon Horizons is probably my favourite episode to date 😎

I absolutely loved the background story of how Friede and Cap met, and that it was Liko’s mum who instigated the whole thing (and the cameo from bb!Liko was adorable ☺️).

Cannot wait to see more 🥰

Seeing that we're entering into the next arc, out of curiosity I'd love to know what your top 5 Horizons episodes were up until HZ025!

Mine is as follows:

1. HZ018. Still the only episode that made me burst into tears when I watched it the first time.

2. HZ025. Just seeing all the action, Friede's hella cool moments and more exposition to the plot, it shot up to the top three.

3. HZ021. Seeing how Liko's gentle kindness and patience opened up Hatenna's heart, I just loved that episode.

4. HZ014. That confrontation with Spinel and Friede having to use his trump card the first time? Loved it!

5. HZ007. I just enjoyed the casual episode of the kids asking Cap to train them haha.

The title for HZ018 has been revealed! According to leaker GryphonCool, it's the backstory to Cap.

I wonder if we'll see young Friede.

By the way, it was kinda cute how Liko and Roy called their hypothetical channel for videos "LikoRoy channel".

It's really fitting for them really.

It's interesting that most of the older characters in the Rising Volt Tacklers wanted to leave behind their jobs because it didn't suit them anymore, but at the same time it doesn't mean that they don't like their areas of expertise or that they want to completely change it. There is a kind of nuance there that I appreciate.

Friede didn't like being cooped up in a lab and probably found his old job stagnant, but he still likes researching mysteries related to Pokemon. He just wants to travel the world while researching instead of sitting at a desk.

Orio joined Friede because she was getting bored with her job, but she still likes mechanics in general. I feel like she probably accepted building and designing the Brage Asagi for free because it was a project she found challenging? Perhaps she couldn't work on projects like that in her old job, and she wishes she could have.

Mollie's situation is interesting too. While it feels like Friede and Orio picked their paths out of personal passion, Mollie's path was set and kind of expected from her because she comes from a family of Pokemon Doctors. She didn't think too hard about her future, so she just followed in her family's footsteps, probably because it was an easy thing to do. She grew to like her job but she didn't like waiting around at Pokemon Centers when there could be Pokemon injured in the wild so she decided to leave her job. We still don't know how she joined Friede and the others, but they probably needed a doctor on board since they are always traveling so they probably wanted her to join them once they met her. Honestly, Mollie's path is compelling imo because it shows that you can grow to like something that you picked kind of as a default choice. Perhaps it didn't start off as pure passion, but she ended up finding it rewarding.

I'm really curious about how Murdock joined the crew too, and how he chose his path. They probably realized they needed a cook too. I wonder if he joined at the same time as Dot, or if he invited Dot afterwards.
