391 continues pretty seamlessly from 390. i really should’ve reread more of succession arc to prep for the new chap but ehh.

it’s so funny that the other two mooks decide to run back to morena immediately after facing one (1) setback....like okay

the mafia family names are xi-yu, hei-ly etc in this tl but i could’ve sworn the fan tl i read while hxh was publishing had the names translated as shu, ei and sha...spelling out shueisha. was that a manipulation or did it actually get changed in the official tl lol

Chapter 390

If it wasn’t for the fact that this is the final chapter before hiatus I probably wouldn’t give my thoughts on it. It’s not that I have nothing to say, quite the opposite actually, I’m just not sure if I will be able to put all my thoughts into words :/

But here goes nothing!

-This chapter still has quite a lot of text but not too much. I feel like I was able to keep up with the conversations and thoughts. Also it was nice to get some action.

- I find the first 2 pages so fascinating. I don’t really care about Zhang Lei but I love to find out more about him in this way: he is theorizing what kind of ability his guardian has based on his personality.

- Zhang Lei’s guardian has always given me Bocca della Verità “Mouth of truth” vibes. When I was a kid there used to be fortune telling machines based on that all over a certain mall. Here is a picture of the machine. My point is I really want to stick my hand in it’s mouth.

- It has been pointed out that the flower engraving on the coins is Houttuynia cordata. To sum it’s characteristics: very invasive but also has culinary and medical uses. I have no idea what this could mean but I’m eager to find out.

- Look at how many goddam soldiers this one hallway has??? Also whenever I see something like this I ask myself “If you ran between them wouldn’t they accidentally shoot each other since they are standing opposite of each other?”

- So about Onior’s room... Did he reeeeeally need to take all those hunting trophies on this trip???

- “Good luck sleeps and waits.” Wouldn’t it be amazing if all these higher princes end up killing each other and then we just have some kids left who really can’t fight.

- We got 2 new Xi-Yu family members this chapter, Lynch and Zakuro. I don’t know which is which but I’m going to rant about one of them.

- I went “wow” at this scene. “Already trying to kill one off them? So brutal of you Togashi.” But then.....

Blood manipulation...... I don’t like this ability at all. It’s so impractical and unoriginal.... You could just control your hair like Palm did and the end results would pretty much be the same as seen here. This ability requires constant blood transfusions and they comment on how they don’t even like to cut themselves to use this ability. It feels like every series needs to have one of these types of powers because it’s so cool....

But I have to give Togashi some credit. He did make Killua’s abilities work and if introduced this way I probably would have had same problems with them.

This might end up having some amazing uses. Maybe they can take over wounded opponents by inserting their blood? I hope the reason it’s so impractical is that there needed to be some powerful restrictions to make it work.

This panel does hint that there is indeed more to this power....

- On the contrast, I really like the beat the truth out of people ability that other member has.

- Yes I have been watching Jojo part 5 and so has Togashi apparently.

It would have been nice to see familiar characters before hiatus but I didn’t hate this chapter. At least it didn’t end in a cliffhanger like... some...other times hiatus started...

I hope Togashi is well enough to publish chapters like this in the future. 20 chapters a year is actually a lot. It means almost every other shonen jump issue has hxh in it. I know it will be worth the wait but I’m worried of never seeing the end of this arc.
