Hello there, we meet again! In this special post, I would like to talk about the 10 years anniversary of local band, Hujan. Or people preserved it at ease with #Hujan10Tahun. I’m going to indulge in words of how I liked the band and how they often decrease my music interest almost daily. More important is I will give my honest opinion towards Hujan.
It started circa 2008 which was when the independent scene in Malaysia erupted due to the TV series ‘KAMI’ which exposed a lot about our local scene and how crowd have been involving. Thanks to ‘KAMI’, bands such as Couple, Meet Uncle Hussain, One Buck Shot, and etc has been exposed more widely This of course led me in noticing Hujan with their single, Pagi Yang Gelap that has been on mainstream radios unstoppable amount of times beating the charts.
I started to listen to them because of their music, it was good and Japanese-like. I started to find them on the internet and downloaded most of their songs. It was a huge pop that time if you have a song which did not make it in the radio and t’was cool.
Fondling the songs like Bila Aku Sudah Tiada, Aku Scandal, Lonely Soldier Boy, Hiba and so much more, I like this band enough to listen to every releases. I followed them such as I followed bands that I like. But then I know them much closer.
As media have been following the tails of the independent scene, Hujan was not included. If you guys remembered, there was this stupid news involving Noh telling a fan “Awak busuk”. It was funny for me because I thought it was just a troll.

What clicked me when I heard Objek Bulat’s song Oh Khayalanku, my friend told me it was similar to Aku Scandal of Hujan’s. I thought I gave it a listen and damn he was right. And THENNNN I thought that Hujan started to inspire a lot of new upcoming bands. Every band wants to be them if not part of them.
I was like - okay. And then local kids followed their way. Like the hair, the glasses and other random sort of things. It was okay at that time and if you still wear them now, public will call you ‘rempit’, what a world. So back to Hujan, I was not hating but it made me think, if you want to follow good, longer and experienced band, why not Butterfingers? Gerhana Ska Cinta? Or even Love Me Butch? But it’s okay because maybe Hujan’s music are easier to alter or even follow.
I’ll get back in the next paragraph, but I want to talk about their music. I literally is listening to their songs while typing this post.
What I recognized is, their song turned to sometimes better into cliches. It’s not bad but it don’t resembles who Hujan was. I’m not saying their current songs are bad at all, I like most of them but it’s just not the same. I understand they have to get out of their comfort zone and create new music. I would do such thing too.
I remembered when Noh argued with Naza from The Times. The Times is one of my all time favourite band but I won’t be bias. If I’m remembering this properly, it was an interview held by XFM with Noh (or Hujan) and Noh said something his song with Altimet which he stated something a new genre ‘indie-rap’. Naza was furious and he took it on Facebook and Noh realised and they quarrels some more on a Facebook page which a community of people hating on Hujan. For my opinion, you don’t create a statement just because you are popular now. Earn respect is important and I don’t know if Noh purely meant it in a sort of way or what. But in what I saw, most of the problems was caused by Noh’s ego of being the new top dog.

One think that I do not like is currently, they are treating Hujan as a legendary indie band, which I thought is fluke. What about Pop Shuvit? Did they received such recognition? Damn, Butterfingers? The Times? Even Gerhana Ska Cinta got left out! Nitrus? Grey Sky Morning? Komplot? No they did not. For me, when I see Hujan, it is just a band. Just because they involved in profitable concerts, it does not prove a thing for me. Yes, they’re doing it for their Raingers but just because their fans are now 15 years old and know nothing. Now that their are pop with ‘legendary’ status, I think it is unfair for other longer and experienced bands. For fuck sake, Pop Shuvit is still a hype in Japan and our industry still does not endorse that.

I guess that is why I hated them so much more than I do before because they received all this hype and the media ignored the fact to take back more than 10 years back to the more deserving bands. Most of them did not quit but they were getting old and moved on. At least our media hype them as well. That’s my issue with Hujan. Not whit the band directly, but with the fans and media. I won’t blame a successful band which topped their achievements. But maybe it is my view on the media. For Hujan, keep doing the things you’re doing for the Raingers.
