Take Me to Church
Written By: Hozier
Artist: Hozier
Released: 2013
Alternate version included: NYC Subway, 2019
“Take Me to Church” is the debut single by Irish recording artist Hozier. It has become an international hit, reaching #1 in 12 countries, and has been certified five times platinum in the US. “Take Me to Church” was nominated for a Grammy Award for “Song of the Year” in 2015. Despite its widespread and international success, Hozier was a struggling musician when he recorded the song. And in fact, it wasn’t until the music video — a critique of Russia’s anti-LGBT+ policy, which some audiences have found controversial — went viral that the song attracted attention. “‘Take Me to Church’ is essentially about sex,” Hozier said in an interview with New York Magazine in March 2014, adding that “it’s not an attack on faith. It’s about sex and it’s about humanity, and obviously sex and humanity are incredibly tied. Sexuality, and sexual orientation — regardless of orientation — is just natural… The song is about asserting yourself and reclaiming your humanity through an act of love.” The song has also garnered attention from musicians around the world — it was, for example, covered on The Voice, and director David LaChapelle released an interpretive dance video of “Take Me To Church”, featuring British Royal Ballet veteran Sergei Polunin performing choreography by Jade Hale-Christofi.
[Verse 1]
My lover's got humor
She's the giggle at a funeral
Knows everybody's disapproval
I should've worshipped her sooner
If the heavens ever did speak
She's the last true mouthpiece
Every Sunday's getting more bleak
A fresh poison each week
"We were born sick"
You heard them say it
My church offers no absolutes
She tells me "Worship in the bedroom"
The only Heaven I'll be sent to
Is when I'm alone with you
I was born sick, but I love it
Command me to be well
[Pre-Chorus]
Aaa, Amen, Amen, Amen
[Chorus]
Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
[Verse 2]
If I'm a pagan of the good times
My lover's the sunlight
To keep the goddess on my side
She demands a sacrifice
Drain the whole sea
Get something shiny
Something meaty for the main course
That's a fine looking high horse
What you got in the stable?
We've a lot of starving faithful
That looks tasty
That looks plenty
This is hungry work
[Chorus]
Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins so you can sharpen your knife
Offer me my deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins so you can sharpen your knife
Offer me my deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
[Bridge]
No masters or kings when the ritual begins
There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin
In the madness and soil of that sad earthly scene
Only then I am human
Only then I am clean
[Pre-Chorus]
Oh, oh Amen, Amen, Amen
Good God, let me give you my life
Ain't No Mountain High Enough
Written By: Valerie Simpson & Nickolas Ashford
Artist: Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell
Released: 1967
“Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” marked the first collaboration between soul artists Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell in terms of releases. It was the first single from their debut album United where it also appeared as the opening track on the record. Although they kept their relationship as professional as could be, the two were practically inseparable with most describing them as “brother and sister.” At Terrell’s funeral after her tragic death at the mere age of 24, her mother barred everyone at Motown from attending except Gaye (who also delivered the eulogy) as she felt he was her only friend there. Perhaps there really was no mountain, valley or river that could ever come between them. The song was listed by writers of the UK publication NME as one of the Top 150 Singles of All Time, and the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. The song would go on to be covered by dozens of artists, including Diana Ross, The Supremes and The Temptations, as well as the songwriters Ashford & Simpson among others.
[Verse 1]
Listen, baby
Ain't no mountain high
Ain't no valley low
Ain't no river wide enough, baby
If you need me, call me
No matter where you are
No matter how far
Don't worry, baby
Just call my name
I'll be there in a hurry
You don't have to worry
'Cause, baby, there
[Chorus]
Ain't no mountain high enough
Ain't no valley low enough
Ain't no river wide enough
To keep me from getting to you, babe
[Verse 2]
Remember the day I set you free
I told you you could always count on me, darling
From that day on, I made a vow
I'll be there when you want me, someway, somehow
Oh, baby, there
[Chorus]
Ain't no mountain high enough
Ain't no valley low enough
Ain't no river wide enough
To keep me from getting to you, babe
[Bridge]
Oh no, darling
No wind, no rain
Or winter's cold
Can stop me, baby (No, no, baby)
'Cause you are my goal
If you're ever in trouble
I'll be there on the double
Just send for me, oh, baby, ha
[Verse 3]
My love is alive (Woo)
Way down in my heart
Although we are miles apart
If you ever need a helping hand
I'll be there on the double
Just as fast as I can
Don't you know that there
[Chorus]
Ain't no mountain high enough
Ain't no valley low enough
Ain't no river wide enough
To keep me from getting to you, baby
Don't you know that there
Ain't no mountain high enough
Ain't no valley low enough
Ain't no river wide enough
Ain't no mountain high enough
Ain't no valley low enough

Hozier actually said the song is about institutions forcing extreme sexual standards on people, discrimination against lgbt people and breaking free from sex-negativity: 'The song is about asserting yourself and reclaiming your humanity through an act of love.'
yeah, i know he's said that, but that's about his comparison of his lover in the song with religion and why he did it, isn't it? the toxic atmosphere of the catholic church was a metaphor for the relationship in the song, and the song itself is a duel regular ol' ballad type song, and a critique of modern day christianity and its hypocrises.that is. if i'm not missing any other interviews or thing he's said abt it fjsjsjfigig. i just know all the stuff from the same one you mentioned and remember he said he wrote take me to church after a bad break up, and that's just, how his words came across to me??

Dream a Little Dream of Me
Written By: Gus Kahn, Fabian Andre & Wilbur Schwandt
Artist: Cass Elliot aka Mama Cass
Released: 1968
Originally recorded by: Ozzie Nelson, 1931
The single, originally recorded for the album “The Papas and the Mamas”, was born out of studio sessions for the aforementioned album. The songwriter was a friend of Michelle Phillips' father and the song had been a hit in the 1950s, so it was frequently sung during rehearsals. Cass would cover the song and “tried to sing it like it was 1943” she told Melody Maker, “and somebody had just come in and said, ‘Here’s a new song.’ I tried to sing it as if it were the first time.”
Stars shining bright above you
Night breezes seem to whisper "I love you"
Birds singin' in the sycamore tree
Dream a little dream of me
Say "nighty-night" and kiss me
Just hold me tight and tell me you'll miss me
While I'm alone and blue as can be
Dream a little dream of me
Stars fading but I linger on, dear
Still craving your kiss
I'm longing to linger 'til dawn, dear
Just saying this
Sweet dreams 'til sunbeams find you
Sweet dreams that leave all worries behind you
But in your dreams, whatever they be
Dream a little dream of me
Stars fading but I linger on, dear
Still craving your kiss
I'm longing to linger 'til dawn, dear
Just saying this
Sweet dreams 'til sunbeams find you
Sweet dreams that leave all worries far behind you
But in your dreams, whatever they be
Dream a little dream of me

Heaven Is a Place on Earth
Written By: Ellen Shipley & Rick Nowels
Artist: Belinda Carlisle
Released: 1987
Re-recording included: 2017
“Heaven Is a Place on Earth” was the lead single from Belinda Carlisle’s second album, Heaven on Earth. The single was released in September 1987, shortly before the album, and it reached the top of the charts in at least nine countries. The song features Thomas Dolby on keyboards, and among the backing singers were Michelle Phillips (of the Mamas and the Papas) and the song’s writers, Rick Nowels and Ellen Shipley. When Carlisle reprised the song for her 2017 album Wilder Shores, she slowed the tempo and sang only with piano accompaniment.
[Chorus]
Ooh, baby, do you know what that's worth?
Ooh, Heaven is a place on Earth
They say in Heaven love comes first
We'll make Heaven a place on Earth
Ooh, Heaven is a place on Earth
[Verse 1]
When the night falls down
I wait for you and you come around
And the world's alive
With the sound of kids on the street outside
[Pre-Chorus]
When you walk into the room
You pull me close and we start to move
And we're spinning with the stars above
And you lift me up in a wave of love
[Chorus]
Ooh, baby, do you know what that's worth?
Ooh, Heaven is a place on Earth
They say in Heaven love comes first
We'll make Heaven a place on Earth
Ooh, Heaven is a place on Earth
[Verse 2]
When I feel alone
I reach for you and you bring me home
When I'm lost at sea
I hear your voice and it carries me
[Pre-Chorus]
In this world, we're just beginning
To understand the miracle of living
Baby, I was afraid before
But I'm not afraid anymore
[Chorus]
Ooh, baby, do you know what that's worth?
Ooh, Heaven is a place on Earth
They say in Heaven love comes first
We'll make Heaven a place on Earth
Ooh, Heaven is a place on Earth
[Interlude]
(Heaven)
(Heaven)
(Heaven)
[Bridge]
In this world, we're just beginning
To understand the miracle of living
Baby, I was afraid before
But I'm not afraid anymore
[Break]
(Heaven)
[Chorus]
Ooh, baby, do you know what that's worth?
Ooh, Heaven is a place on Earth
They say in Heaven love comes first
We'll make Heaven a place on Earth
Ooh, Heaven is a place on Earth
Ooh, Heaven is a place on Earth
Ooh, Heaven is a place on Earth (Ooh)
Ooh, Heaven is a place on Earth
Ooh, Heaven is a place on Earth (Ooh)
Ooh, Heaven is a place on Earth
(Ooh, Heaven is a place on Earth)
