Standards To Be Followed by Food Service Distributors & Transportation Companies
The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) is passed in response to outbreaks of listeria and salmonella mainly emanating from the manufacturing, processing, and handling of food by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
During the recent Spireon webinar Job Samson, executive director of the agricultural and food transporters conference for the American Trucking Association broke down FSMA for the carriers to comply with newly laid rules and regulations.
In April 2016, the FDA finalized the new food safety rule to prevent food contamination during transportation. The rule is essential for all the freight shipping services providers, loaders, carriers, and receivers who are involved in the transportation of human and animal food. The FSMA requires the accordance of best safety practices for sanitary transportation, such as appropriately refrigerating food, adequately cleaning vehicles between loads, and properly protecting food during transportation. But the rule does not specifically address food security, such as seals and locks.

Exemptions From FSMA Compliance Rule
The shippers, receivers, or carriers who are engaged in food transportation operations that have less than $500,000 in average annual revenue.
The transportation activities performed by the farm.
The transhipping of food from the United States to another country.
The transportation of food that is imported for future export and that is neither consumed nor distributed in the United States.
The transportation of compressed food gases (e.g., carbon dioxide, nitrogen, or oxygen authorized for use in food and beverage products), and food contact substances.
The transportation of byproducts of human food which is transported for use as animal food without further processing.
The transportation of food that is completely enclosed by a container except for the food which is temperature controlled for safety.
The transportation of live food animals, except molluscan shellfish.
Vehicles And Transportation Equipment To Comply
Designed and made from material that can be properly cleaned and sanitized.
There must be adequate maintenance in sanitary conditions where the food will never become unsafe. For instance, if there are broken pallets that could puncture the products and should not be allowed in trailers.
The food must be stored in a manner to prevent pests or contamination which could result in the food becoming unsafe.
Therefore, for time and temperature-controlled food (TCS food), the equipment must be maintained, designed, and equipped for providing adequate control of temperature.

For the Dispatchers:

Monitoring temperature readings while the load is in the transit phase and eliminating all the discrepancies.
Notifying inbound planners by making sure that they are aware of what is inbound and what to expect.
Monitoring the integrity of the seal and making sure the seal numbers are entered into the loaded and stop empty calls.
For the Drivers:
Conduct pre-trip inspections, which include reefer units as well.
Checking the condition of the trailer - air chute and door seals.
Adequate training for reefer unit operations.
Inspection of products prior to loading.
Checking for extra condensation and leaking.
If there is an extended amount of time for loading and unloading, the dispatch must be notified.
Checking the reefer tank fuel levels and additives.
Checking the box temperature every four hours when stopped.

The personal assistant
Paul, a 40-year-old man in good shape, had recently become the CEO of his wife Jackie's father's company. Paul had been working at the company as a manager since he and Jackie got married, and they had a life comfortable together. Jackie worked three days a week in the company's HR department, where she was in charge of hiring.

When Jackie's father retired, Paul took over as CEO. One of the first things Jackie did was fire the old personal assistant, who had been having an affair with her father. Now, she found herself trying to seduce Paul, her husband.
In an attempt to find new a personal assistant, Jackie put up a LinkedIn ad. She received 80 applicants, but only a few of them matched the desired profile. She decided to invite five of the applicants for interviews. Three of them were too pretty, which Jackie saw as a potential risk. One was a 50-year-old woman, who was nice but too expensive and only wanted to work three days a week. The last applicant was Thomas, a handsome gay man in his 30s from New York City. On Thomas's first day at work, his sister brought some cupcakes from her restaurant to give to Paul's co-workers. The entire management team loved them, and Jackie started ordering cupcakes for client meetings every day. When Paul returned from his trip, he wanted lunch in the office. Thomas ordered an amazing chicken salad from his sister's restaurant. Thomas also brought cupcakes with Paul's coffee, and Paul was amazed. He wanted another one. Jackie told Thomas to keep Paul as busy as possible, with a tight schedule and home for dinner. Paul even requested gym time in his agenda, and Thomas made sure to reserve time for it during lunch, meaning there was no time for them to go out for lunch.
Thomas arranged with his sister to prepare an easy two-course lunch every day. She also catered for meetings and provided lunch for the staff if they desired it.
Paul was extremely happy with Thomas's work. They became friends, and Thomas accompanied Paul wherever he went. Jackie was thrilled because Paul had no stress, was home more often, and stayed in shape. She had no worries that he would cheat on her like her father had cheated on her mother.
When Paul had a conference in Hawaii, Thomas got to join him. They spent a week attending meetings and parties. Thomas made a schedule for everything, including gym sessions, meetings, lunches, and dinners. Thomas woke up every morning at 5:30 to hit the gym, have a swim, lounge at the beach, take a quick shower, and start the day at 9:00 am. Paul, on the other hand, wanted to sleep in and didn't join Thomas for his early morning routine. Paul got drunk the first night during dinner and made remarks to Thomas about his amazing chest. Thomas wondered if Paul was flirting with him. The second night, Paul got drunk again and made remarks about Thomas's ass. Thomas pretended to drink but wasn't actually consuming alcohol as he preferred to stick to his gym routine in the mornings. On the third night, Paul got even more drunk and started making explicit remarks about how horny he was and how he had no sex with Jackie unless she wanted something new, like a car, jewelry, or luxurious vacations.
The next morning, Paul woke up with a hangover and had a greasy breakfast. He asked Thomas how he got back to his room, and Thomas replied that he had brought him back. Paul was embarrassed. However, the same scenario repeated itself on the fourth night, and this time, when Thomas brought Paul to his room, Paul had a boner. Thomas was intrigued yet confused.

In the following months, Paul and Thomas had another conference, this time in the Bahamas. Thomas prepared everything just like before. Paul's weight continued to increase, and Paul and Thomas continued their secret office affairs. Paul's body transformed, with his abs turning into a belly, but Thomas found him more sexy than ever. Paul cried and expressed how much he needed Thomas in his life. They started living together, and Paul continued to grow in size. They were both happy, and the company expanded just like Paul's waistline. They made a great couple and the company was flourishing.

Her career included many "firsts", including being the first female aircraft maintenance officer, one of the first two female air officers commanding at the US Air Force Academy, and the Air Force’s first female Director of Maintenance. She served as a White House social aide during the Carter administration. Her service medals and decorations include the Bronze Star, the Presidential Unit Citation, and the Vietnam Service Medal. She retired as a major general in 1997, the highest-ranking female officer in the Air Force, and the Nation’s highest-ranking African-American woman in the Department of Defense. Upon retirement from the Air Force, she served NASA as the Florida Site Director and Logistics Process Owner for United Space Alliance, the company managing the nation’s shuttle program. Besides her Spelman BA, she holds a BS in Business Management from the University of Maryland University College. She was awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree from Spelman College.
