When it concerns squeezing every single possible minute out of a 24 hr day, chef, TELEVISION speaker and father-of-four Jock Zonfrillo is an expert.

After decades of tough graft in the cooking areas of some of the most well-known restaurants in the world, Jock now questions now if he made the best decision early on when he prioritised his career and the chance it offered him to supply his young kids with financial stability, over costs real time with them.

Jock talked with host Sean Szeps in a recent episode of The Father Kit about his youth in Scotland, what motivated him to have the amazing career he has had, and the hard lessons he's learned along the method that are helping him be a better-- more present-- daddy today.

Kitchen area life vs domesticity

When you're thinking about selecting cooking as a profession, you know from the start that there are going to be long hours ahead. However what might not occur to the young, enthusiastic chef is that those long hours can only come at the expense of other things in your life. And if you're a young dad attempting to construct a career, the important things more than likely to be sacrificed is time with the household.

This was Jock's experience. "I was a workaholic for most of my career. There was this weird thing in hospitality, that the harder you worked-- like if you operated in a three Michelin star dining establishment in London, 18 hours a day-- it was a badge of honour.

"But actually it was a big portion of your life missed. It's still a chunk of your life that's gone permanently. And with it goes what was around you, whether that's relationships, household relationships, sweethearts, spouses ... all of that disappears because portion. I was so concentrated on my career, I was so focused on getting much better at being a cook and understanding whatever about food. That was all that mattered and everything else was number 2."

Offered the laser-beam focus Jock had on his career, it's possibly no surprise then that his first marital relationship that resulted in the birth of his child, Ava, broke down for absence of time and energy offered to nurture it.

"There's no question my very first marriage broke down since I worked too much," Jock says. "It's a simple fact. It's something that I are sorry for in terms of the chance of feeling fatherhood for the very first time. You don't get that again.

"I don't understand if it's just from the point of view of a workaholic or not, however being a young father, we just didn't have cash. And so there was this weird thing for me as a dad, as the income producer, where you want to accelerate your profession to the point where you can be financially steady and give your kid whatever. And there's another part of you that states you wish to be at home and hang out in your home, but you can't have both."

We can discover from our mistakes

Skip ahead a bunch of years and Jock is now married for the third time and anticipating his 4th kid. After working through tricky divorces and hard relationships with his kids, has he gained from his errors? Definitely, he states.

There's absolutely nothing more vital than being present, Jock says. "If there's something I have actually discovered-- it opts for parenting in addition to everything else, but it's more effective in the parenting realm-- it's to be present. When I'm hanging around with [my kids] I will provide one hundred percent of my attention. I won't be making bread on the side at the very same time as feeding them breakfast or whatever."

And there are immediate payoffs for prioritising that time spent with your kids. "You can see instantaneous value when you're one hundred percent present. Not thinking of work. Not thinking of something else."

Sure, you may have built the train track 800 times previously for your child. You might have enjoyed Charlie and the Chocolate Factory 67 times. It does not matter.

"Simply exist and in the moment, and be jubilant with each kid," Jock repeats, "due to the fact that you're creating their long-lasting memories, and existing means that you can offer them the very best memories, and you can give them the finest impressions of a domesticity.

"You can provide the very best impressions of what an excellent daddy is by existing. That's where all of it starts. And from there, everything simply streams. Due to the fact that for me, when you're not present, that's the beginning of the issue."
