Ayodhya: A Rising Business Hub after the Ram Mandir Inauguration
On January 22, 2024, Ayodhya, the ancient city nestled along the banks of the revered Sarayu River, witnessed an event of monumental significance – the inauguration of the Ram Temple. This historic occasion marked not only a spiritual milestone but also ignited a transformative journey for Ayodhya into a bustling business hub. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visionary declaration of substantial investments to elevate Ayodhya into a smart city laid the groundwork for a remarkable economic boom, echoing across various stock markets.
Tumblr media
The inauguration event was nothing short of spectacular, drawing a crowd of over 7,000 people, including esteemed international guests. As the dust settled after the grand festivities, Ayodhya found itself at the cusp of a new era, poised to embrace a surge in economic activity and infrastructure development.
The Ayodhya Development Authority officials foresee an unprecedented wave of visitors, with projections ranging from 3 to 5 lakh daily visitors for at least the initial month post-inauguration. These estimations paint a vivid picture of the immense potential that Ayodhya holds as a magnet for religious tourism.
The vision doesn’t stop there. With investments exceeding $10 billion earmarked for new airports, modernized railway stations, sprawling townships, and enhanced road networks, Ayodhya is primed to attract an annual visitation of about 5-10 crore, as per a comprehensive report by Jefferies.
The Ram Temple’s presence in Ayodhya is poised to elevate the city into a tourism hotspot, potentially surpassing renowned religious destinations like the Golden Temple and Tirupati Temple in terms of annual footfall. This influx of tourists, coupled with a multi-billion dollar makeover, is expected to catalyze a multiplier effect, driving growth across various sectors.
Sectors ranging from hotels, hospitality, and tourism to food and beverages, daily essentials, healthcare, banking, and construction are gearing up to meet the burgeoning demand. Economists and job market experts predict a significant surge in employment opportunities, especially in Ayodhya’s burgeoning hospitality and tourism sectors.
Currently, Ayodhya boasts approximately 17 hotels offering a total of 590 rooms. However, with 73 new hotels in the pipeline, including 40 already under construction, the city is gearing up to accommodate the influx of visitors. Major hospitality chains like Indian Hotels, Marriott, Wyndham, and Oyo have already inked deals, signaling their confidence in Ayodhya’s potential.
The infrastructure overhaul encompasses connecting highways, refurbished roads, water, and power projects, laying the groundwork for sustainable development and seamless connectivity. Notably, India’s leading airlines have launched multiple flights connecting major cities with Ayodhya, while arrangements have been made to accommodate chartered flights, highlighting the city’s newfound prominence on the aviation map.
The ripple effect of Ayodhya’s transformation extends beyond its borders, benefiting adjacent cities like Lucknow, Kanpur, and Gorakhpur. The economic landscape is poised for a paradigm shift, with Ayodhya emerging as a beacon of prosperity and progress in the heart of Uttar Pradesh.
The inauguration of the Ram Temple heralds not just a spiritual awakening but also a renaissance of economic vitality for Ayodhya. As the city embraces its destiny as a thriving business hub, the possibilities are limitless, promising a future brimming with prosperity, innovation, and growth.

Tourism back on its feet as travellers hit the road
Tumblr media
The roads less travelled in 2020 are filling up again. Hotel rooms are taken, New Year packages are selling out. The long-missing holiday mood is back as people prepare to bury this forgettable year. Don’t leave your New Year reservations for the last moment, says Ankush Nijhawan, MD of Nijhawan Group and CEO of Travel Boutique Online. The weekend crowds are back in Alibaug, Lonavala, Coorg, Mussoorie, Rishikesh, Shimla, Jaipur — all at drivable distances from major cities. Daniel D’souza, president and country head, leisure, SOTC Travel, sees the pent-up demand stretching well into 2021. There has been a significant increase in bookings for the next few months, he says. Kapil Chopra, CEO of The Postcard hotels says his hotels are fully booked for the next few weeks. A survey by travel portal Goibibo shows 35% of the respondents intend to travel before the year is out. Rajesh Magow, co-founder and group CEO of MakeMyTrip Limited that includes MakeMyTrip, Goibibo and red-Bus, says people are fi nding new ways to fulfi ll their travel aspirations, especially when they are assured of safe travel choices. “Travellers are looking to unwind and welcome the New Year in high spirits. We are witnessing a steady rise in bookings,” says Anil Chadha, COO, ITC Hotels, adding that there is a rush for their Manesar, Goa, Agra, Jaipur and Mussoorie properties. Nipun Vig, VP operations of Sarovar Hotels and Resorts, also says their leisure properties in Bhimtal, Dehradun, Goa, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Lonavala, Mandawa, Palampur, Mashobra and Thekkady have seen 100% occupancy over the past few weekends, and there is a clear preference for drivable destinations. Jodhpur and Jaisalmer are sold out with bookings from Gujarat while the Bhimtal property has most of its bookings from Lucknow and Kanpur. For Kerrie Hannaford, vice presidentcommercial, Accor India & South Asia, the spurt in weekend travel, staycations and drivecations are “green shoots” for the industry. Even without business travel, city hotels are doing well again, says Chris Franzen, area VP, West India, Hyatt Hotels. “People are seeming to enjoy the idea of staycation and embracing it even in their own cities.” Hotel chains ITC, Leela, Taj, Oberoi and Accor are planning grand year-end celebrations. IHG hotels are offering attractive deals on stay; Oberoi Mumbai and Delhi hotels are advertising staycation packages for Christmas and New Year, while ITC hotels are running a 31-day celebration showcasing the best of their food and beverage offerings. It’s not only road trips but also private fl ying that is seeing heightened interest. People are tired of being holed up at home, says Santosh Sharma, cofounder and CEO, Foresee Aviation, and founder of Bookmyjet. “We are seeing a lot of curiosity regarding fl ying private. During the last few months and the upcoming season, 90% of fl yers are fi rst-time users,” he says. Besides domestic destinations, Maldives and Dubai are also attracting Indian travellers. Priyanka Nijhawan, director, Dubai Tourism India representative offi ce, says this time people are fl ying to Dubai to stay longer, with many opting to work from there. Ankush Nijhawan sees another positive sign in people turning to travel agents for bookings. When lockdowns were announced suddenly, people didn’t know where to go for rescheduling bookings and cancellations. Thanks to that uncertainty, “people have started approaching agencies again for their travel bookings to have someone to talk to or rely on in case of an emergency,” he says.

Pressure increased on the government on Friday to end the ongoing Parliament session at the earliest after several politicians quarantined themselves. The session is scheduled to end on April 3.
Former Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje tweeted that she and her son Dushyant Singh have gone into self-quarantine after attending singer Kanika Kapoor's party in Lucknow last week. They, however, have not been tested positive yet.
Earlier in the day, Kapoor quarantined herself after testing positive for coronavirus. In a statement released on Instagram, the 41-year-old singer said she developed signs of flu in the last four days.
Kapoor had landed in Lucknow from the United Kingdom in the second week of March, and had attended at least four parties in Lucknow between March 14 and 16 and also stayed with her family in Kanpur. There are allegations that she was not screened for coronavirus at the Lucknow airport.
Raje and Singh, along with several other politicians and bureaucrats, had attended the party at a hotel in Lucknow on March 14. Kapoor was present there as was Uttar Pradesh health minister Jai Pratap Singh, who has also quarantined himself. The party was hosted by a nephew of former Bahujan Samaj Party MP Akbar Ahmed Dumpy.
Singh is a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Lok Sabha member, and had actively participated in parliamentary proceedings and meetings after his return from Lucknow.
On Wednesday, Singh was at Rashtrapati Bhavan, along with 100 other MPs from Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, for a breakfast meeting with President Ram Nath Kovind.
Some who had interacted with Singh since his return from Lucknow, including Trinamool Congress’ Derek O’Brien and Congress’ Deepinder Singh Hooda, also quarantined themselves pending tests.
"While in Lucknow, I attended a dinner with my son Dushyant and his in-laws. Kanika, who has unfortunately tested positive for COVID-19 was also a guest. As a matter of abundant caution, my son and I have immediately self-quarantined and we're taking all necessary precautions," Raje said in a tweet.
O'Brien tweeted, "This government is putting us all at risk. The PM says self-isolate yourself but Parliament is on. I was sitting next to Dushyant the other day for two-and-a-half hours. There are two more MPs who are in self-isolation. The session should be deferred.”
O’Brien had spent two and a half hours sitting next to Singh at a meeting of the parliamentary standing committee on road transport, aviation and tourism on Wednesday.
Sources said Singh also attended another party in Delhi hosted by an opposition politician.

Retrace the History of British Raj in Delhi through a guided city tour
During the British Raj’s history, the Indian (Sepoy) Mutiny was a significant event. This mutiny is referred to as India’s First War of Independence. Before we give you the snippets of the tour, here is some context about the Mutiny which has made its mark in each place of your visit during this guided tour.
Indian Mutiny, also called Sepoy Mutiny, widespread but unsuccessful rebellion against British rule in India in 1857–58. Begun in Meerut by Indian troops (sepoys) in the service of the British East India Company, it spread to Delhi, Agra, Kanpur, and Lucknow. In India it is often called the First War of Independence and other similar names. Read here for the Background of the mutiny, the rebellion, and the aftermath of the mutiny here.
What you will see in the tour of British Raj's Delhi
You will be driven to North Delhi which was the scene of action during 1857 Mutiny (as the British called it) or First War of India’s Independence (as Indians call it).
In North Delhi we will visit St. James Church, Kashmiri Gate, Nicholson Cemetery and Mutiny Memorial and learn about the turmoil of 1857 when India was fighting for its freedom and the British East India Company had almost lost it. We will continue the narrative to 1911 when the capital of British India was shifted to Delhi and finally to Lutyens’ Delhi where the main buildings of the new capital city were built.
We will discuss this fascinating story of British Raj through stories associated with these sites and some of the prominent Englishmen associated with that story – namely, James Skinner, John Nicholson, Edwin Lutyens and Lord Mountbatten.
This experience will be conducted by a subject expert who will keep you engaged in interesting conversations.
Significance of each place of the tour
Significance of St. James Church
St. James' (also known as Skinner's Church) is an Anglican church in Delhi, India, built in 1836 by Colonel James Skinner. It is one of the oldest churches in the city, and part of the Church of North India Diocese of Delhi.
It was the church the Viceroy of India, attended until the Cathedral Church of the Redemption, near Gurudwara Rakab Ganj, was built in 1931.
The church houses several tombs. One houses the remains of the British Commissioners of Delhi, William Fraser, near the large Memorial Cross erected in memory of the victims of 1857 revolt. At the rear is the tomb of Thomas Metcalfe, who lived in Delhi from 1813 to 1853, serving as Agent to Governor General of India and a Commissioner.
Colonel James Skinner's grave at St. James' Church, near Kashmiri Gate, Delhi Skinner died at Hansi on 4 December 1841 at the age of 64, and was first buried there. Later he was disinterred, and buried in Skinner's Church on 19 January 1842 in a vault of white marble immediately below the Communion Table. North of the church lies the family plot, Skinner family, where many of his fourteen wives and many children, are buried, the burial in this place was that of a lady who died in England, but wished that her ashes be interred here. (Wikipedia)
Significance of Kashmiri Gate
The Kashmere Gate or Kashmiri Gate is a gate located in Delhi, it is the northern gate to the historic walled city of Delhi. Built by Military Engineer Robert Smith in 1835, the gate is so named because it used to start a road that led to Kashmir.
Today it is also the name of the surrounding locality in North Delhi, in the Old Delhi area, and an important road junction as the Red Fort, ISBT and Delhi Junction railway station lie in its vicinity.
When the British first started settling in Delhi in 1803, they found the walls of Old Delhi city, Shahjahanabad lacking repairs, especially after the siege by Maratha Holkar in 1804, subsequently they reinforced the city's walls. They gradually set up their residential estates in Kashmere Gate area, which once housed Mughal palaces and the homes of nobility.
The gate next gained national attention during the Mutiny of 1857. Indian soldiers fired volleys of cannonballs from this gate at the British and used the area to assemble for strategizing fighting and resistance.
Significance of Nicholson Cemetery
As cliché as it may sound the most peaceful place in India's capital is Nicholson Christian Cemetery, the final resting place for hundreds of Christians, both of British and Indian origin, who passed away during the British Colonial rule of the country.
Located right across the street from the Metro station and around the corner from the historic Kashmiri Gate the cemetery is a somber refuge from the hustle and bustle of the sprawling urban giant that is the capital city of Delhi. Somehow when you step through its gates the cacophony of sounds characteristic of the afternoon rush in Old Delhi fade away to a placid silence.
The graveyard has an almost preternatural beauty to it. Marble Victorian and gothic revival-style headstones rise up from overgrown shrubs and brambles while peacocks walk the grounds making their haunting calls.
Significance of Mutiny Memorial
The Mutiny Memorial is a memorial situated in front of Old Telegraph Building, Kashmiri Gate, New Delhi. Also known as Ajitgarh, it was built in memory of all those who had fought in the Delhi Field Force, British and Indian, during the Indian Rebellion of 1857.
Erected by the Public Works Department at government expense in 1863 the memorial was hastily designed and constructed. It received much public criticism on completion. In 1972, the 25th anniversary of India's Independence, the Indian Government renamed the monument 'Ajitgarh' ('Place of the Unvanquished') and erected a plaque stating that the 'enemy' mentioned on the memorials were 'immortal martyrs for Indian freedom'.
Significance of Lutyens’ Delhi
When the British Raj decided to move it's capital from Calcutta to Delhi in 1931, the Raj brought in British architect Edwin Lutyens (1869–1944) to design and build administrative buildings and other green spaces in the city.
Lutyens team of architects were hired to design and build out the city's central administrative area, with the instruction to retain and develop most of the city's green spaces.
It all began with the magnificent Rashtrapati Bhawan (formerly known as Viceroy's House), at the top of Raisina Hill.
The Rajpath, also known as King's Way, connects India Gate to Rashtrapati Bhawan, while Janpath, which crosses it at a right angle, connects South End Road (renamed as Rajesh Pilot Marg) with Connaught Place.
Currently, Pranab Mukherjee, the President of India, and stays in the official house of Rashtrapati Bhawan.
The Secretariat Building, which house various ministries of the Government of India including the Prime Minister's Office, is beside the Rashtrapati Bhawan and was designed by Herbert Baker (one of the architects lead by Edwin Lutyens).
India Gate Is a war memorial located besides the Rajpath. It is memorial dedicated to the 82,000 soldiers of the Indian Army who died during the First World War and the Third Anglo-Afgan War. Some 13,300 servicemen's names have been attributed on this magnificent architectural marvel. (Wikipedia)

On 30th October, we reached Lucknow from Kanpur by road. We booked an Uber cab from Kanpur for Lucknow. We are here for two days, which I knew were not enough to explore Lucknow. We thought of making the best of the time we had in our hands. The well known Imambaaras, surrounding monuments and famous eateries were on the radar.
We started early after having breakfast at the hotel. (It was complimentary, so why leave :p ). We reached the company’s guest house by 11.00 am in Lucknow. We left immediately after having a hot cuppa of tea for “bada Imambara” by an Uber cab only to know that the whole complex is closed due to “chelum”. Many tourists and locals were coming back as no information was available on any website about it. Guides or agents at Imamabaara also mentioned that Aminabad will also be closed.  The cab driver suggested that we should go to the “Residency” complex as it will not be closed. We earlier planned to go to residency on 31st , but under the circumstances,  the plan is reversed. We changed location in Uber app to “Residency” , so that we  continue in the same cab. We were at “Residency” in 10 minutes.
The “Residency complex” is located in the heart of the city and is a group of several buildings which served as the residence of British resident general in the court of Nawab.
Ticket:
The entry to this well kept ruins is nominally ticketed (Rs 15 for Indians, SAARC (Bangladesh,Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Maldives and Afghanistan) and BIMSTACK (Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Myanmar) countries, Rs. 200 for all others foreign tourists). It’s open throughout the week. The well maintained ruins is under the tutelage of ASI (Archaeological Survey of India).
History:
The construction of the complex dated back between 1780 -1800 AD during the rule of Awadh Nawab saadat Ali Khan II. The Residency was under siege during Indian rebellion of 1857. This red-brick building was the refuge of around 2000 British natives.
People of Awadh were enraged by the unfair annexation of Awadh by Britishers while Wajid Ali Shah was forced to exile and was in Calcutta (now Kolkata). The people of Awadh were resenting the move and their anger sparked which resulted in unprecedented fury on 30 May, 1857.The Awadh troops defied British authorities and declared a war against seizure. Maulavi Ahmed Ullah was in command and attack on Residency began on 30 June 1857. The British forces were attacked on 1st July, 1857 in a room. Miss palmer, daughter of Colonel palmer was injured in leg by sniper’s bullet. henry Lawrence also fell to the bullets of Awadh revolutionary forces and died on 4th July, 1857 in Dr. Fayrer’s house.
This resulted in a forced captivation of Britishers in residency for almost 3 months. An epidemic broke out in residency and more Britishers died of the epidemic than in combat. On 17th Nov, 1987, Sir Colin Campbell forces could connect with the Residency after a constant fight of 4 days. Residency residents were evacuated only on 22nd November.
Present Condition:
The Residency site now consists of ruins of majestic buildings which give an indication to the various nature of activities within the complex. Besides the main Residency building, there was the Sheep house, Slaughter house, Sikh square, Dr.Fayrer’s house, Banqueting hall, the Treasury house, Begum Kothi, the Church, Mosque and the crematoriumthat deserve mention.
A well maintained museum is also in the complex.
Our Visit:
Facilities in the complex
It’s a very well maintained complex. All the ruins are without roof but are well maintained. Most of the visitors were young couples who have come to snatch some peaceful lovey dovey moments away from the gaze of the crowd in the city. Few groups of college students were also there who appeared to be history enthusiasts. Two senior citizen couples from Europe appeared to be keen historians and were the only foreign tourists . They appeared to be impressed with the upkeep of the complex. All the buildings in the complex have semicircular arches, an influence of muslim architecture.
In front of the “Treasury House”
As one enters the complex, one finds the “Treasury” building on right hand side. The treasury house is supported by plane coloumns. A vast building constructed in 1851 at a cost of Rs. 16897.00 only. Single story building is supported by double pillars. During the revolution of 1857, it’s central hall was converted into ordinance factory for manufacturing enfield cartridges.
A pillar monument is erected in front of treasury building in the memory of Colonel Robe of Bengal Staff Corps.
Next to Treasury house, was “Banqueting  Hall”. It was constructed by Nawab Sadat Ali Khan and probably the most imposing structure in the whole complex. Standing in the middle of the roofless ruins of the complex, I was imagining it’s glory in the good old day. It must be furnished with most lavish furnitures, chandeliers , carpets with excellent food and wines and guests in their finaries – ahh, it must be a sight to behold. A fountain at the entrance is still in working condition.
As one moves little ahead, one passes by Dr. Foyerer’s home. A palatial home with water channels running around and inside the home to lower the temperature in the hot summer days of Lucknow.
Water canal cooling system
We passed by the mosque, Begam Kothi and Flag tower amidst the well manicured gardens

Museum:
The Model Room, a part of the main Residency Building, which housed a model of Residency as it was before the 1857 War, has now been converted into a full-fledged Museum displaying the original model of Residency, old lithographs, photographs, paintings, documents and period-objects, besides a diorama of Residency siege, giving an accurate visual account of the freedom struggle of 1857 in a chronological and systematic way. Besides, a gallery showing the excavated objects has also been added.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
One can take the cameras but bags have to be deposited in the lockers available at the entrance of the museum. Photography is allowed inside the museum.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
At the other end of the complex is the burial ground. A young couple was having their meals amidst the graves.
Any one with an interest in history will enjoy this complex. two to three hours are required for an history buff to complete the visit of the complex.

Street Entrepreneurs: - The Original Entrepreneurs of India
Street Entrepreneurs: - The Original Entrepreneurs of India
Nearly five centuries ago, Agra was the commercial nerve center of the prosperous Mongol empire. Thanks to the monuments built by kings and emperors, including the Taj Mahal, this Uttar Pradesh was just a little more than a tourist station.
But, almost unnoticed, Agra has come to illustrate another economic revolution. Despite its dilapidated state and civil infrastructure, it has become a center of Original Entrepreneurs of India new opportunities in the service sector. The impact of these opportunities was that by the end of 2004, until the data became available, more than six out of 10 people were now working alone, compared to just five years earlier.
Agra is just a showcase for a new generation of second-tier Indian cities outside the Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore and Kolkata regions, which have begun to enjoy the benefits of India's economic growth of 8% over the past four years.
A five-year comprehensive government survey places the city of Agra behind Varanasi as a city of more self-employed workers, followed by Bhopal, Indore and Pattna. A few years ago, Agra was not in this picture with Varanasi, Patna, Pune, Lucknow and Kolkata among the five largest cities in terms of independent men.
As a result, apart from 40% of the population who rely heavily on agriculture, and some still depend on the traditional works of leather, footwear and iron foundries, most people in Agra now work in professions as "self-employed".
According to the National Organization for Sampling Survey, in 1999-2000, 431 of every 1000 workers were self-employed in the city. This increased to 603 per 1,000 in 2004-2005. At the national level, the number of self-employed persons has also increased, from 368 to 395 per thousand, and nowhere in Agra and in many similar cities.
Kids new genius
Tell people like Yatendra Singh, 21 years old. When he graduated from the local university in 2005, he never imagined that in less than three years he would share ownership of two Internet cafes. "The Internet started to take off in Agra, I would have survived another way, but maybe I would not run an independent company," he says.
The Internet boom came a bit later to lure to Delhi or Mumbai, but now it is within walking distance of the small Singh vault in the Bodhla-Flint Road, and the entry from Agra Sikandra. It marks the burial place of the great Mongol emperor. The surrounding area has been rebuilt to meet demand for housing. "At least eight Internet cafes, big or small, have appeared since 2004 in this area," says Singh. Pigters also dry cleaners, public providers of telephone calls, real estate brokers and mail delivery shops, all in the midst of busy, packed with motorcycles and  Street Entrepreneurs of India.
It seems part of the reason that Agra moved to free work to be better connected with Delhi and neighboring countries. It is building a new fast track to connect it to Noida near New Delhi, while the city government is reaffirming its position on the metro system. It also has the distinction of being one of only five cities in a very large state, apart from Varanasi, Merot, Lucknow and Kanpur. All these qualities seem to make Agra the perfect service center, despite low industrial activity. Big Brother Singh, Krapal, for example, is now juggling between Agra and Noida, a five-hour drive, and setting up his second Internet cafe family in the electronics city.
Growing needs
At the same time, the government expect UP residents of Agra city by 3.84% per year to reach 2.20 million in 10 years and 2.7 million for 2031.
This, for the state administration, can only mean that Internet cafes, post offices, taxis, hotels, education centers and realtors will continue to snowball.
"We are growing very rapidly and the city is changing. The only way to adapt to these changes is to find new forms of employment through investment and modernization of the city," says Ashok Kumar, commissioner of Agra.
As Commissioner, Kumar is the Managing Director of Agra, responsible for monitoring development programs and the planned government. "A great deal of self-employment now comes from occupations that either did not exist a decade ago or were small," he says.
The increase in self-employment is evident throughout the country, although analysts differ on what it means. Arvind Fermani, chief economic adviser to the Planning Committee, planning for the country's most important agency, says the transition to free labor suggests a part of the eventual shift from unskilled labor to skilled farming and manufacturing jobs.
Free work is the usual way of working as it rises in the value chain from agriculture to industry, Fermani wrote in a 2006 paper on employment and equitable growth of the Commission. "The fact that the ultimate change to more skilled jobs in manufacturing already occurs in India depends on other factors, such as skills development and more rational labor laws, to encourage employment in the industry," he says. .
But Arjun Sengupta, a member of parliament and a former member of the Planning Committee, sees in the direction of self-employment, a decline in farm wealth exacerbated by delayed industrial activity.
"This needs attention: we must promote industrial activity and increase agricultural productivity to stimulate better paying jobs that have decent conditions," he says.
Also Visit : Original Entrepreneurs of India
Opportunities in abundance
Analysts say the increase in self-employment shows a change in the way the Indian economy works. "The increase in self-employment shows that people are finding work outside the traditional sectors," said Duncan Campbell, Director of Policy Integration at the ILO.
The new opportunities mean that many have been able to influence the career change they did not expect.
Take Rajendar Yadav, 25, who is already a veteran of the city's traditional industry: shoes. In 2002-2003, when the city's exports of shoes reached $ 350 million (Rs.1,435 crore), Yadav decided to leave his well-paid job as a production manager at Superhouse, a shoe exporter.
By 2005, he established himself in a new role as an independent shoe and accessory manufacturer within Agra, Delhi, Noida and Chennai. A recently settled businessman. He now buys leather-making machines and sells many things, such as embossed beads, to five regular customers.
"What is the point of continuing to work for others while all the commercial sectors of the city thrive?" Yadav said in his office, a room furnished on the roof of his two-story house in Awas Vikas. New colony. Developed by the Agra Development Authority since 1999. It seems that most of his work is carried out through his mobile phone.
Yadav represents the changing employment pattern that is being revealed in Indian cities. The survey data reflect this trend in 29 first-tier cities with a population of more than 1 million, including Hawara in the east to Kalyan-Dumbili in the west and Hyderabad in the south to Lodiana in the north.
The owner of the Internet cafe and the bleeding-skin worker are the top end of the self-employed: they also understand employers. However, the largest proportion of self-employed workers in the country are so-called domestic workers, self-employed or who produce a contractor / subcontractor, part of a long value chain. According to the 1999-2000 surveys, there are about 29 million households dependent on this industrial work. While many are women, Agra today has the second highest proportion of self-employed men in India, after Varanasi, where 757 of the 1,000 workers were self-employed in 2004-2005.
