Just because they had a tentative truce, there really is no reason for Carlos to be here. And yet he is, beer in one hand, Marjan leaning into his side. Aside from TK and Alex, she’s the only familiar face and the sole reason he had been talked into coming to the birthday bash in the first place.

“Why don’t you wanna go if he invited you? Didn’t you guys get along lately?” Marjan had asked, already applying lipstick for a party Carlos hadn’t intended to go to.

Carlos sighed, leaning back on her bed. “Barely.”

“No more sticky notes?”

“I guess not.”

“And he kept his promise to clean after himself?”

“For that one week yes.”

Marjan now twisted the ends of her pink scarf into a neat fishtail. Through the glass of her mirror she gave Carlos a pointed look. “It’s the least he could do after you so heroically saved him.”
