The #HondaPrelude was never about straight-line speed, though each subsequent generation was faster and faster still than the original rather sedate Mk1. The Mk2 #Prelude became the definitive version of the car, a sharp-suited lightweight GT with hidden headlights and lithe handling. The Mk3, introduced in April of 1987, picked up the baton there and added the Prelude’s greatest single innovation up to that time - four wheel steering. #Honda was the first of the #Japanese marques to reach the market with four-wheel steering, but the others were working on it. Power outputs of this generation would seem small by today’s standards - the ’88 Si came with a 135-hp B20A, but thanks to innovations like this, and Honda’s emphasis on light weight, they were able to use every last bit of power effectively. The #4WS system was done through a mechanical linkage (other makes used electronic sensors) - when the steering wheel was turned only slightly, the rear wheels would steer in the same direction as the fronts, resulting in quick, stable lane changes. Indeed, engineering sold the idea to management on the safety advantages that this could produce. Turning the wheel a little more would point the rears straight ahead. Full lock caused the rear wheels to turn in the opposite direction to the fronts to make parking easier. The regular Prelude was a sharp handler to begin with and it seemed like the 4WS would only improve that tendency - but in reality the difference wasn’t significant enough to overcome the cost of the option on North American cars - $1300 on the already $16,000 #PreludeSi. In #Japan, buyers flocked to it - 80% of Preludes were so equipped. In North America it was the opposite - only a fraction of U.S. Preludes got it. This generation didn’t sell quite as well as the Mk2 mainly due to increases in price and the general move away from coupes, but it still did very well for Honda - they were still popular cars and owing to their high quality, there are many survivors.
