Intermission - Hologrammatica by Tom Hillenbrand
(because sometimes I consume other things. sometimes I even have shit to say about these things. sometimes, like in this case, these are books other people lend to me because they want me to have opinions at them.
thusly, blame my friend.)
First - Medium amount of potential, with its mix of utopian and dystopian ideas, its dabbeling in climate fiction, its allusions to gender...... Umsetzung mangelhaft. You do not use your sequel hook to smash and undermine every single theme you have ever even casually winked at. That's not- that's not how it works. You dingus.
Second - That being said, I was kinda surprised that this... wasn't bad?
(which - my fault. I kinda avoid German literature. Idk, is it weird to kinda dislike your first language? Who's to say.)
The plot was a bit by-the-numbers and it ended up saying absolutely fucking nothing, but otherwise... Enjoyable. Functioning. Quite alright, really. Galahad was a bit of a dick, but he's a P.I., so that's to be expected. And I mean, his love interest did quite predictably turn out to be a cop (derogatory) and had their potential character arc walk into a brick wall in the end... but otherwise? Yeah. It was fine.
Third - To be honest, the best part of this was probably live-messaging my friend with my reactions (or yelling "Aliens?!" at her when I saw her in person - yeah, this book goes places).
Fourth - I really hate the epilogue. I really, really do. How can you do something like this to your story?? It's just... ugh-
Example:
The book, in its world-building, poses an interesting question: What if humanity could actually recognize and work to remedy its mistakes? What if there actually was a canary-point, when the metaphorical bird would fall from its perch and, for once, humanity would watch it drop and realize that things have gone too far, and, crucially, fucking act. What if, what if...
... well, the book kinda answered that one in the epilogue. And the answer was "like fuck there is".
Look, I'm sorry? I know how I sound, yes? I'm really trying to remember the good bits. I know they existed! I had fun reading and theorizing!
The whole holo thing was.... well, I hope intentionally fucked-up. Because painting over mold is not a solution, honey. No, not even if you do it with holograms. (What's the power consumtion on that thing, anyway)
Also, it must have led to some really shitty accidents, right? Hiding storm drains, adding decorative fixtures on walls - indistinguishable-from-physical-reality holograms must have led to some really embarassing misadventures, right? Right?
Also, the idea that humanity would just abandon the paranoia that led to our current trend towards the Gläserner Mensch.... I doubt it. Very much. I mean, it needs to be the case for plot's sake, but it also broke my suspension of disbelief. Meh.
Yeah so anyway. Nice book, that I ended up bitching about a lot, whoops. The epilogue is my nemesis, but before that it was... okay? Okay, yeah. Let's go with okay.

Das erste Lächeln
Wir frühstücken heute morgen zusammen im Bett und da passiert es: Das Baby lächelt. So richtig! Zuerst lächelt es mich an, wenig später Alex.

Hologrammatica
Es ist ganz klar ein Krimi. Er beginnt klassisch: Ein Detektiv wird damit beauftragt, eine junge Frau zu finden. Sie ist Programmiererin, heißt Juliette Perotte und seit ein paar Tagen verschwunden. Und es geht um Leben und Tod – mehr Informationen hat er nicht. Das Ganze spielt im Jahr 2088. Das Leben wird von einer Holotechnologie bestimmt, das heißt man kann sein Aussehen projizieren und verändern... sehr schwierig, da einen Menschen zu finden.

Ich fand es wirklich spannend, auch wenn der letzte Twist nicht sooo überraschend war.
Alte Freunde
Diese Woche besuchte mich eine Freundin mit der ich erst seit kurzem wieder in Kontakt bin. Heute fiel mir auf, dass ich sie schon seit 15 Jahren kenne und auch wenn wir uns zwischendurch 6 Jahre nicht gesehen haben, ist es wie früher, sehr vertraut.
Nur mit Kindern statt Party. Voll toll! ;)
Das Regal
Wir haben es schon ein paar Wochen, aber ich erfreue mich jeden Tag daran. Das Ypperlig ist stylisch und meine aktuellen Lieblinge finden darin Platz.

Review: “Hologrammatica” by Tom Hillenbrand
"Hologrammatica" (not sure if there is an English title yet) is a crime thriller set in the future that is over-flooded by holograms - from advertisements to changes of physical appearance, the world is full of it. People have also begun uploading their conscience into other bodies, which makes investigating a disappearance that much more difficult. And as the protagonist with the coolest name ever, Galahad Singh, dives deeper into this case, the consequences for the entire world are revealed. It was an engaging novel with some very interesting visions about the future. And imaginative exploration of the world that seems very realistic and has consequences that reach further than you would think. The plot is action-packed and hardly ever slows down, and the reader flies through the novel as well. I loved the discussion of the trans/gender-fluid/pan LGBT aspect: with people uploading their mind into different bodies, how do you define gender? And if you love someone who switches the sex of their body every few days, what is your sexual identity? That was a nice and unexpected addition to the otherwise very deep and stirring plot. However, having already read "Drone State", I realized this was basically the same content in slightly different packaging. That left a bitter taste at the end.

Diese Woche war so kurz und dank des Wetters auch sehr schön.
audible Podcasts
-keine Werbung-
Ich bin zu einer schlechten Leserin geworden, dafür höre ich Hörbücher. Stundenlang.
Nun hat audible für Abonnenten sein Podcast Sortiment stark erweitert. Man kann, als Nicht-Abonnent, einzelne Podcasts “kaufen” aber das lohnt sich meiner Ansicht nach nicht.
Ich finde das audible-Prinzip für Podcasts irgendwie merkwürdig, aber auf der anderen Seite hoffe ich sehr, dass die Podcast-Macher dementsprechend auch bezahlt werden.
Meine aktuellen Lieblingspodcasts sind:

Zoo
Ich habe eine Jahreskarte für den Berliner Zoo. Und diese Woche konnte ich sie endlich nutzen. So lag ich in der Sonne, zwischen Giraffen und Elefanten auf einer Holzliege in Form eines riesen Blatts. Es war großartig. Das nächste Mal suche ich mir dann ein Blatt bei anderen Tieren ;)
Märkische Kiste
Seit 3 Wochen bekommen wir nun jeden Dienstag eine märkische Kiste geliefert. Dank Schwangerschaft und kommender Stillzeit ist es die “Schonkiste” und ich habe das Gefühl wir werden dadurch, leider, auch von einem abwechslungsreichen Angebot “verschont”. Dafür kann der Anbieter nichts, es ist ja auch noch quasi Kohlzeit.
Ich hoffe so ab Mai/Juni auf ein etwas Abwechslungsreicheres Sortiment
Hologrammatica
Wie schon erwähnt, ich bin ein Hörbuch-Fan. Zur Zeit höre ich Hologrammatica von Tom Hillenbrand, gelesen von Oliver Siebeck und finde es richtig gut. Ein Sci-Fi Thriller mit guten Ideen, der nicht immer einfach ist, aber sehr interessant.
Jens Spahn Body
Es ist schräg, natürlich soll das Baby später eine eigene Meinung haben, politisch gebildet und fundiert soll sie sein. Aber ich merke, ich habe den Spleen das Baby zu politisieren. Ich habe folgenden Body gekauft und freue mich jetzt schon das “Statement” Baby darin auszuführen.
Wenn mir jetzt noch jemand eine kleine Pussyhat dazu häkeln/stricken könnte (gerne bezahle ich dafür) wäre ich ja überglücklich ;)
