They use these chips to track the player's speed, ice time and how much distance they’ve skated, along with using these chips to show which player is where on the ice when using the name bars that show up on the screen before a puck drop or during a replay.
They also have a tracker in the puck that measures how hard they’re hitting the puck when you see the slapshot speed pop up on the screen above the goalie net.
