Fun show at Café Nine in New Haven yesterday with Emma Swift (L) and Robyn Hitchcock (C). Oh, and Joey Ramone’s crotch (top). Thanks to Fernando Pinto Presents / East Rock Concert Series and Café Nine for having me. If you haven’t checked out Emma’s record of Dylan covers “Blonde on the Tracks” go check it out, and if you get to see her perform them live, it’s pretty mind-blowing. Robyn treated us to a few live tunes from his new record “Shufflemania”.

So I was watching the 1995 adaptation of “Persuasion” last night, as one does, and I thought of something Alfred Hitchcock said about suspense. It seems incongruous to bring up Hitchcock in reference to this movie but hear me out.
When asked about the tension and suspense in his movies, Hitchcock said (paraphrasing from memory here) that suspense is just a function of information. Give the audience information the characters don’t have. If you show a scene of two people in a cafe talking and then the cafe blows up, there’s shock but no suspense. But if you show a bomb under the table that the characters don’t know about, that creates suspense, because the audience knows something the characters don’t.
What in the world does this have to do with “Persuasion”? It struck me again last night how completely oblivious every character in the story is to what’s actually happening. There are only 3 characters who know the full tale of what’s going on here: Anne, Wentworth, and Lady Russell (who doesn’t truly know the whole story, and is not present for the majority of the film). As far as everyone in Uppercross and Lyme knew, Captain Wentworth and Miss Anne Elliot had crossed paths briefly a number of years ago. It was an inconsequential acquaintance, and they have not had any long or visible interactions in the present. Their own respective sisters are totally clueless, even.
But we, the audience, know. The film shows us Anne’s state, her misery over the loss of Wentworth, that she still has memories and mementos of him. We see her shock and then relief when Sophy Croft talks about her brother’s marriage and then adds it was the other brother. We see her grabbing the chair for support. Nobody else around Anne notices this, but of course the audience, being given pieces of information about Anne’s history with Frederick is looking for those moments and the film is focusing us on them. And then as Anne beings to regain her spirits, we see Wentworth’s feelings for her soften, then his jealousy starting to rear it’s head, and so on.
That’s what all films do, of course, make us look at certain things, call our attention to moments, details, in order to bring us into the story. But I feel like this movie does it better than others and it feels to me quintessentially Austen to tell the story this way. Her books are much like this too, where you as the reader see the inner workings of the main characters that they don’t always reveal to the other characters. (We know Elinor is heartbroken at a level her family doesn’t realize until late in the book, we know Elizabeth’s opinion of Darcy has altered wildly while her family still thinks she hates him, etc.)
I think this is one of the reasons this adaptation is the one I keep coming back to. Watching it is basically being given insider knowledge. We get to see the reconciliation and romance between Anne and Wentworth even as all their friends and family don’t notice. It’s like being let in on a secret. Everyone around them has been oblivious to this romantic story unfolding in their midst, and at the end, Anne and Wentworth are so lost in each other they are oblivious to a literal circus walking past them.

Annette Benson, Robin Irvine, and ivor Novello in Downhill (Alfred Hitchcock, 1927)
Cast: Ivor Novello, Ben Webster, Norman McKinnel, Robin Irvine, Jerrold Robertshaw, Sibyl Rhoda, Annette Benson, Lillian Braithwaite, Isabel Jeans. Screenplay: Eliot Stannard, based on a play by Constance Collier and Ivor Novello. Cinematography: Claude L. McDonnell. Art direction: Bertram Evans. Film editing: T.L. Rich, Ivor Montagu.
Downhill (retitled When Boys Leave Home for its American release) is a standard melodrama about the calamity brought upon a schoolboy by a shopgirl's accusation and the promise he made that prevents him from revealing the truth. Roddy Berwick (Ivor Novello) is a rich young man whose roommate, Tim Wakeley (Robin Irvine), a student attending the school on a scholarship, gets a shopgirl, Mabel (Annette Benson), in what they used to call "trouble." (Or so she supposedly says: No intertitles explicitly reveal the nature of her accusation.) But Mabel pins the blame on Roddy because his family has money. Roddy nobly takes the rap, promising not to reveal the truth because Tim would lose his scholarship. The sequence that sets up the premise for the rest of the film is slow, overlong, and made a bit murkier than it should be by Hitchcock's refusal to use intertitles. But once Roddy leaves school in disgrace and is kicked out by his father (Norman McKinnel), the film picks up the pace. (It's also something of a break for Novello, who was in his mid-30s when the film was made, a bit old to convincingly play a schoolboy.) The first really Hitchcockian touch in the film comes when we find the disgraced Roddy as a waiter, serving a couple at a table in a cafe. The woman leaves her cigarette case behind, and Roddy slips it into his pocket. Has he fallen so far that he now resorts to larceny? No, the camera angle shifts, and we suddenly find that we are onstage. Roddy is a member of the chorus of a musical comedy, and he has taken the case so he can return it to the star of the show, Julia Fotheringale (Isabel Jeans), with whom he is smitten. It's a witty bit of staging that shows the hand of the master. Suffice it to say, things do not go well for Roddy: He inherits a small fortune from his godmother, which makes him an easy mark for the golddigging Julia, whom he marries and who bankrupts him. He becomes a gigolo in a Montmartre dance hall, and declines further until we find him, dissipated and ill, in a Marseilles rooming house. His fortunes take a turn when some sailors, scheduled for trip to England, decide that his family must have money and take him along to collect a reward for returning him. So Roddy makes his way home and is welcomed by his father, who, having learned the truth, has been searching for him all this time. This rather soppy stuff was devised by Novello himself for a play he co-wrote with Constance Collier under the pseudonym David L'Estrange. It was adapted into a scenario by Eliot Stannard, a frequent collaborator with Hitchcock in the silent era. Though the film is on the whole a dud, there are a few moments of brilliance, particularly a stunning scene when a patron in the dance hall suffers some kind of attack and the waiters draw back the curtains to let in fresh air. The morning light floods the hall, revealing the shabbiness of the locale and its aging, over-made-up customers. The scenes in the squalid Marseilles house are also beautifully illuminated by cinematographer Claude L. McDonnell. And those who know of Hitchcock's fear of policemen will relish the first sight Roddy has when he reaches England at the end: a stern-looking bobby patrolling the harbor.

As I was sitting at the terrace of the café, a graying old man with a moustache and round glasses that was leaving paused by my table and asked, Newspaper? I looked at him and said yes, gladly thank you very much, the courteous way of being and manners of another age where it was customary to leave your newspaper to other cafe patrons, he had a cane an a hat and looked every bit like the characters of Agatha Christie black and white movies by Alfred Hitchcock, all he was missing was a melon hat, I would learn later on making his acquaintance that he was a retired doctor, and that he walked with a limp due to a stray bullet during Argentina's civil war that had shattered his knee, in retrospect I understood the gravity and determination of his face, that although he had surely seen the worst of the dirty war he kept it to himself, like many others, and there were others that didn't and wrote the many poems and literary works that was their escape from the tragedy that senselessly gripped Argentina, that like all tragedies was undue and didn't make any sense other than fulfilling itself at the expense of countless lives, in the columns of the newspaper that he gave me was an article about Che Guevara by Italo Calvino and a retrospective of the work of Gelman, Juan Gelman, Argentinian poet and intellectual of the sort that the Junta could neither stand nor reduce them to silence without making their message even more potent and heard far beyond the borders of the nation, I kept the newspaper and translated parts of it for the novel, which wasn't easy but I spoke some Spanish from growing up in Kansas, each day as I returned to the same cafe I sat down to read and translate one of Gelman's poems, for the sense of being there that emanated to from them, where Gelman could neither silently shout nor silently keep quiet, but you couldn't do these things or if you could it came at the cost of an immense strenght and heartbreak, because the worst shouts are not those who are heard, they are the silent shouts of the heart, and yet silence is strength, silence that turns into determination that nobody can defeat because it is the fabric of will, that is not a vocal expression or a desire but the silent refusal, permeating his poems, to surrender and to accept defeat, because that battle is as old as humanity itself, the battle of right against wrong is not carried on as much by the righteous as by those who are wronged, who pay the price of suffering, by the wretched of the earth which are frowned upon because of our collective failure at fairness and our personal successes at selfishness
