Conversations about offshoring work are such a cluster. They’re ripe with racism, degrade people, make assumptions about human worth and talent and innate ability… and it all feels so yuck.
I’ve met the teams and the people are not the problem. They’re smart and trained and experienced. They’re people doing work to make livings just like the rest of us. But the businesses and business models they employ that make offshore staffing appear to be SO CHEAP (but never are in the long run) are so problematic. They abuse people, commodify them, and dispose of them at the first chance.
Literally the company I’m offshoring to is calling their people “badges” in speaking about the teams. “We have 8 badges ready, 4 interviewing…” if a badge doesn’t perform at a checkpoint in training, we swap them for another badge. It’s so gross. I’m not bothered by who you hire and what it costs, but I’m really fucking concerned about how they treat their people.
