Australian online design platform Canva Inc. today announced it has raised $85 million, led by Mary Meeker’s venture capital firm, bolstering its valuation to $3.2 billion.
That makes the company, co-founded by 32-year-old Chief Executive Officer Melanie Perkins, one of the most valuable female-led technology startups in the world. The investment comes five months after Meeker, a popular figure in Silicon Valley for her annual internet trends report, picked Canva as the first investment by her new VC firm Bond Capital. That financing had more than doubled Canva’s valuation to $2.5 billion at the time, and now Bond is coming in for more and leading the latest funding round.

General Catalyst, Bessemer Venture Partners, Blackbird and Sequoia China also participated in the new funding. The capital will be used to drive major changes, said Perkins in a phone interview: doubling Canva’s headcount to 1,400 over the coming year and introducing a new Canva for Enterprise.
Canva’s website and apps help people and companies create banners, logos, social media graphics and presentations. Since its inception in 2013 with a mission to make it easier for anyone to design, the Sydney-based startup has expanded with offices in Manila and Beijing.
“We’ve been working very closely with Mary Meeker and her team at Bond since the last round,” Perkins said. “We saw there is a huge opportunity to help enterprises truly transform the modern workplace and become more efficient.”
The company’s focus for the near future will be expanding services for businesses and building presentation products, she said. Canva’s pitch is that non-designer employees in different time zones will be able to easily collaborate and produce brand-consistent marketing and presentation materials any time. About 85% of Fortune 500 companies already use the service, lending credibility to Canva’s claims.
The company’s business model, built around content, community and commerce, is a trait Bond Capital sees in some of the world’s fastest-growing companies, said Mood Rowghani, general partner at Bond.
“Canva is launching a special version for enterprise customers, which will enable businesses to maintain brand consistency at scale,” Rowghani said. “We believe that Canva’s platform can fundamentally change the way we work.”
Perkins saw the need for something like Canva while studying at the University of Western Australia and tutoring other students on how to use traditional design software. Those tools were too costly and hard to learn and use, she thought.
“I imagined the future of design would be entirely different,” she said. “It would be online, collaborative and very simple.”

Since the launch of PUBG Mobile, the game has received several updates from time to time to keep players engaged. However most of the updates were focused on bringing new features, maps and modes to the game with gameplay and on-screen controls remain the same irrespective of the game mode. Now as per the announcement made by PUBG 
Mobile official Twitter handle, the upcoming update is set to get a new movement feature called Ledge grab. The feature is expected to roll out in the upcoming update version 0.15.0 along with a new BRDM-2 vehicle, exploding fuel canisters and new weapons.
The Ledge grab technique is similar to Assassin's Creed game where players can hand through the wall and jump from building to building. Though we are yet to see how Tencent is planning to implement on-screen controls for that, it definitely seems like a breath of fresh air for the players.

Ahead of Google’s big hardware event next week, 9to5Google has gotten access to what it claims is a prototype of the company’s new Chromebook, the Pixelbook Go. 9to5Google previously revealed specs and other details on the device last month.
As expected, the Pixelbook Go has a 13.3-inch 16:9 screen in either 1080p or 4K resolution, two USB-C ports, and options for Intel Core m3, i5, and i7 processors. Other specs are said to include up to 16GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera, a headphone jack, and the Titan C security chip seen in the Pixel Slate.
The Pixelbook Go appears to have an unusual ribbed texture on the bottom, which 9to5Google describes as “somewhat similar to a washboard or the roof of a dog’s mouth,” so make of that what you will. The model that the site got its hands on has a coral color on the bottom with a matte finish on the top panel that’s reminiscent of the “Not Pink” Pixel 3.

Google and Facebook collect information about us and then sell that data to advertisers. Websites deposit invisible “cookies” onto our computers and then record where we go online. Even our own government has been known to track us.
When it comes to digital privacy, it’s easy to feel hopeless. We’re mere mortals! We’re minuscule molecules in their machines! What power do we possibly have to fight back?
That was the question I posed to you, dear readers, in the previous “Crowdwise.”
Many of you responded with valuable but frequently repeated suggestions: Use a program that memorizes your passwords, and make every password different. Install an ad blocker in your web browser, like uBlock Origin. Read up on the latest internet scams. If you must use Facebook, visit its Privacy Settings page and limit its freedom to target ads to you.
What I sought, though, was non-obvious ideas.
It turns out that “digital privacy” means different things to different people.
“Everyone has different concerns,” wrote Jamie Winterton, a cybersecurity researcher at Arizona State University. “Are you worried about private messaging? Government surveillance? Third-party trackers on the web?” Addressing each of these concerns, she noted, requires different tools and techniques.
Duck Google
“The number one thing that people can do is to stop using Google,” wrote privacy consultant Bob Gellman. “If you use Gmail and use Google to search the web, Google know more about you than any other institution. And that goes double if you use other Google services like Google Maps, Waze, Google Docs, etc.”
Like many other readers, he recommended DuckDuckGo, a rival web search engine. Its search results often aren’t as useful as Google’s, but it’s advertised not to track you or your searches.
And if you don’t use Gmail for email, what should you use? “I am a huge advocate for paying for your email account,” wrote Russian journalist Yuri Litvinenko. “It’s not about turning off ads, but giving your email providers as little incentive to peek into your inbox as possible.” ProtonMail, for example, costs $4 a month and offers a host of privacy features, including anonymous sign-up and end-to-end encryption.

The ads you see online are based on the sites, searches, or and Facebook posts that get your interest. Some rebels therefore throw a wrench into the machinery — by demonstrating phony interests.
“Every once in a while, I Google something completely nutty just to mess with their algorithm,” wrote Shaun Breidbart. “You’d be surprised what sort of coupons CVS prints for me on the bottom of my receipt. They are clearly confused about both my age and my gender.”
It’s “akin to radio jamming,” noted Frank Paiano. “It does make for some interesting browsing, as ads for items we searched for follow us around like puppy dogs (including on The New York Times, by the way.)”

Why Startups Need to Tighten Stance on Cybersecurity
Small businesses and startups are the backbones of any economy. While the big brands are there, these startups are the ones that drive the needed change and challenge the big players. Startups are also famous for better focusing on specific areas of the consumer need for a better chance of success.
That said, though, only 56% of startupswill make it through their fifth year in the market.
There can be a lot of reasons for that. In the growing internet landscape of today, one of such reasons to always consider is cybersecurity.
The Significance of Cybersecurity to Startups
It is not unusual to think of cyber breaches and instantly remember the big brands in the business. 
Who could forget the Yahoo data breach? That singular attack gave hackers access to all the 3 billion accounts that the email provider was supporting on its network. 
Sony has also had it worse, having the details – from account logins to banking information – of 77 million gamers leak. They were hit in less than three years from then again, although in another arm. Under their entertainment label, they lost over 100 terabytes of data.
If that is not enough to sway you, Uber losing about 57 million details of drivers and riders in an attack also speaks volumes. The exciting thing about this case was that the company was almost successful at covering it up. That begs the question of how many such attacks have been swept under the rug. 
Now, all of the examples here show that hackers love to try their luck with big businesses alone. There could not be a mere wrong assumption, though.
The numbers show that 43% of cyberattacksare aimed at small businesses and startups. It gets worse: up to 60% of small businesses only last a maximum of six months after a cyberattack. That is not surprising, seeing as 83% of these establishments do not have a financial plan in place to deal with a cyberattack of any scale.
The startup market is not like that of the big players. When the big brands slip up, they can pump in more money to make it all go away. They can also gain back the public’s trust in little time. 
For this, they can leverage how long they have been in the market to appeal to the populace. That is not something you can do as a startup. This underlines why you need to be prepared against such attacks happening.
What to do
Do not wait until an attack happens before carrying out security audits. Contract this out to a reputable security firm within your budget without sacrificing on expertise either. 
Unlike Sony above, make sure to implement the recommendations that the security audits come up with. After all, the entertainment company could have escaped both disasters if only they had fixed the flaws found during their security audits.
Promote good password habits among all your co-workers/ employees/ colleagues too. While there could be an excellent firewall system in place, it would not do so much for you when human error is the weak link. It would not hurt to use a password generator and password manager in combination for best results.
Furthermore, ensure network security with a VPN installed on your router/ office network. The VPNs come with a series of servers under which over internet data is layered. This prevents anyone outside the network – even your ISP – from seeing what you are doing online.
With phishing scams accounting for over 90% of data breaches, it is a serious problem to tackle too. We recommend hosting training sessions for members of staff on how to identify and prevent phishing hacks.
