Okay so I habe a legit question about descendants that idk if it's ever necessarily answered in the books or other media sources but... does Uma have a specific feud or something against Jay that would keep them from some sort of peace/reconciliation after d3? Like obviously there's the rivalry that spilled over to their gangs/lutentients but I wasn't sure if Uma hates Jay or not and I'm trying to world build a fic so I wondered your thoughts if any one what their issues might be

Hi, Anon! Canon’s pretty thin on most details regarding the VKs’ childhood interactions, but here’s what I can tell you: per the books, Jay was hanging out with the pirates (specifically Harry and Gil) long before Uma had formed a gang with them (seeing as how that only happens in the third book, which is set right before Descendants 2). Here’s the source for Jay hanging out with the pirates, by the way:

“No, the goblins only work for themselves,” said Mal. “The only ones who could possibly be loyal to her are the pirates.”

“A bunch of thieves and thugs,” said Jay.

“Harry and Gil? You used to run with them,” Carlos chided. “Didn’t you?”

“I sure did,” admitted Jay. “That’s how I know they’re all a bunch of scoundrels.”

This quote is from Book 3, Chapter 14. Notice that Jay says nothing about Uma specifically, nor does Carlos, who’s very specific about who Jay used to hang out with. Also, note that it’s hilariously ironic (dare I say hypocritical) for Jay to be grumping about the pirates being thieves and thugs. Not my boy’s finest moment. Auradonian propaganda though, what can be said.

At the start of Book 3, young Mal and Uma are said to have been “pranking Hook’s crew, making tick-tock noises to scare the pirate captain himself, and getting on Smee’s already agitated nerves” (Book 3, Prologue), so from this, it can be assumed: 1) Jay and Uma didn’t likely ever hang out as kids, but they definitely saw a lot of each other; 2) Mal was more than likely the one to convince Jay to stop hanging out with the pirates/around the wharf after her fallout with Uma, which happened when they were both 10. This would align with the fact that it’s canon that Jay and Mal became close as children, several years before forming the gang with Carlos and Evie.

The only other suggestion of Jay and Uma having interacted as kids, as far as I recall, is in the first graphic novel, which opens with Evie’s birthday party. A couple panels show Evie, Carlos, Jay, Harry, Uma, and some other children together (with all the parents present except Ursula) before Maleficent calls the party off. This was when they were all around 6 (except for Carlos, who’d have been 4), and since Uma was obviously hanging out at the party without Mal, it’s likely their childhood alliance formed sometime after this.

It’s less clear whether or not Jay was already hanging out with the pirates, since he’s only depicted stealing gifts from Evie when no one’s looking and then running off with his father when the party’s cancelled; Uma and Harry are shown running close to Jay and Jafar, in the same direction, but it would be a reach to say that makes any comment on their relationship at the time.

Final word on it: I think Jay and Uma have a fairly neutral history together in canon when you factor out the issues they’ve had with each other’s gang members. If D3 is canon in your world building without any significant changes or reinterpretations, then it’s pretty clear that the gangs are on track to becoming friends post-D3. That means there shouldn’t be any reason Jay and Uma wouldn’t get along.

If anything, the most awkward thing for them would be realizing that despite how long they’ve technically known each other, they only really know about each other from the rumours and trash-talk on both sides. I think they’d be able to put that aside and start fresh in Auradon, though. Probably be good friends in time! They just seem like they’d bring out the best in each other.
