#blueoystercult’s second album #tyrannyandmutation #1973 #boc has long held a place in my musical heart. If there is such a thing. They’re interesting because they started out as an American answer to #blacksabbath - but they were mostly #hardrock with some #metal leaning songs. They’re also a very literary band, and this album features their first cowriting adventure with @pattismith My sources so far tell me the song the red and the black is a reference to Canadian mounted police, but the lyrics point toward #stendhal’s 1830 novel by that title. Casting about for #60s roots of #heavymetal and had to check out #mc5 #kickoutthejams #1969 #fredsonicsmith blows my doors off every time I listen to this #album. He was married to #pattismith through the #80s and into the early #90s but not long enough, dying far too young in #1994 at the age of 46. This was almost 30 years ago and she still posts about how she misses him. I think this is one of the great love affairs of rock ‘n’ roll. They have two talented children - I was lucky enough to see Smith perform in Detroit with her daughter on keyboards. She jokes about marrying him so she wouldn’t have to change her name. In their day this would be #garagerock, but in the light of the later music it anticipates #punk and heavy metal at times.
