Lenovo HD200 & HD116 Wireless Headphones Review

Recently, a whole series of headphones has appeared on numerous Chinese trading floors, the name of which mentions the well-known Lenovo brand. At the same time, there is not a word about them on the company's official website, and in the large Global networks at the time of preparing this review, only three Lenovo gaming headsets were presented, and there were no other products in this category. Perhaps, in this way, the Chinese manufacturer "probes the soil" and tests new products, some of which we have a chance to see in a wider scale. Well, or someone overly adventurous has found a way to use a promoted brand. It is unlikely that the company's administration is completely unaware of the matter - the phenomenon is quite massive, there are a lot of products, it's hard not to notice them. But, once again, the headphones tested today have no official status. Nevertheless, it became very interesting to look at what is sold under a well-known name. For our acquaintance, we chose a pair of full-size wireless headsets of average cost for the Chinese shops with a rather original and pleasant design, folding design, good declared autonomy, and so on. We have not yet seen any headphones with really good sound in this segment, and we are unlikely to meet them. But some interesting models for everyday use are not too demanding on sound users in it already. Here are just the heroes of today's review, as it turned out, do not even fall into this category. Therefore, the packaging experienced extremely hardships of delivery and came to us with a lid pressed into it. Fortunately, this did not affect the state of the device.

The delivery set includes the headphones themselves, Chinese and English documentation, a short USB-Micro-USB cable for charging, and a cable for connecting to the sound source. The latter has a length of 115 cm and a rather average workmanship - it is too elastic, inconvenient to use and prone to tangling.

The fact that we reached the whole Lenovo HD116 is almost a miracle. They are packed in a box of medium-density cardboard, inside no lodges or other fixing elements, in addition, the device and accessories are protected only with plastic bags. The box contains an image of the device and its brief characteristics. The kit is the same: headphones, documentation, two cables - for charging and wired connection to a sound source. Using the latter is extremely inconvenient due to the low quality of execution and short length - only 75 cm. Design and construction Lenovo HD200 Externally, the headset looks interesting due to the combination of red and black, small inserts "for metal" and quite pleasant both externally and to the touch of matte plastic. True, you cannot name the original design, on the same Chinese trading floors there are a lot of very similar models. We will not list them - this is a thankless task. It will surely turn out that there is another one similar to some unknown brand, and possibly a full copy produced at the same factory.

The design develops easily and with a pleasant soft click. There are no questions about the build quality as a whole: everything looks solid, no backlash or creaks. Moving elements are made of plastic, but reinforced with metal inserts - there is a hope that they will last more or less long. The outer side of the extension of the headband is also reinforced with a metal insert. The power reserve on each side is 3 cm, the adjustment is made with a distinct and somewhat sharp click, the fixation in each position is reliable. Theoretically, the stroke of the retractable part of the headband should be enough for comfortable wearing even on a large head, but in practice this may not be the case. Earpads have some mobility, which is designed to ensure their snug fit to the head. But it is very small, in many cases it will not be enough. The inner part of the headband is made of silicone, small protruding points are applied to the surface. The decision is controversial: on the one hand, an excellent "grip" with the head is achieved in this way - the headphones do not move forward or backward even with active movement. On the other hand, the head under him sweats very quickly. The outer part is devoid of any decorative elements and is made of matte plastic. The outer side of the cups is decorated with a metal-like insert and brand name. The company logo on the box is printed quite correctly, but the font on the headphones themselves is very different - just look at the font "e". In promotional materials on the seller's website, we met the mention of "breathing" ear pads and the promise of a good level of comfort. In fact, the leather substitute here is of very average quality, after an hour of wearing the ears become hot and uncomfortable. The size of the hole is very small - 35 × 50 mm, the headphones press on the curl of the auricle, which after half an hour of wearing causes unpleasant sensations. The earpads are removable, securely held by four pins. Below them is a speaker hole covered with a plastic mesh. There are no designations of the right and left earphones, therefore we will consider the right cup on which the control panel is located. It contains three keys, plus a separate power switch. At the same time, it is not mentioned in the instructions; it is proposed to turn the headphones on and off using the remote control center key. On the bottom of the right cup are a Micro-USB port for charging, a connector for a wired connection to the sound source, a microphone hole and an LED indicator. Due to the lack of USB Type-C, it's time to start criticizing budget devices as well - the vast majority of even inexpensive gadgets have been equipped with them for a long time, you don't feel like holding a separate headphone charging cable. Lenovo HD116 Model HD116 is a little more expensive, but it looks simpler. But simpler does not mean worse - the black case made of matte plastic and textured inserts on the outside of the cups look strictly, but it's interesting. Build quality is quite acceptable - like the first model. The folding mechanism works with a slightly sharp click, but quite correctly and without unnecessary effort. The outer part of the movable elements is made of metal, inside - plastic. When folded, there is a slight backlash, the mount does not look too reliable, but overall not bad - the next day it will not fall apart, but you should not expect work from it for years. The power reserve of the sliding part is 3 cm on each side. Adjustment occurs with a sharp and not the most pleasant click, but the fixation in all positions is reliable. On the inside of the headband above the ear pads are marked "right / left".

The power reserve of the adjustable part of the headband is the same as that of most headphones. But it is quite compact, even on a medium-sized head, the Lenovo HD116 does not sit very comfortably. The rotation of the cups is not provided, therefore, there is no need to talk about a really tight fit of the ear pads to the head. On the inside of the headband, there is an insert in leatherette of "very average" quality with a soft filler. On the outer surface of the headband, made of black matte plastic, the logo is applied. The cups are decorated with a plastic overlay that imitates a metal surface with a texture in the form of concentric circles. The earpads are made of leatherette as the inside of the headband. And he, as already mentioned, is of very low quality. Accordingly, the ears become hot and uncomfortable after the first 20-30 minutes of wearing headphones. The size of the inner hole, like the previously discussed model is only 35 × 50 mm, there is a problem with constant pressure on the auricle here. The earpads are removable, but considerable effort is required to remove them - there are fears that the pins holding them may not withstand. The control and connection panel is located on the right cup. On the outer surface are the volume buttons, then the keys of the Bass function and power. At the bottom, there is an indicator of the operating mode, connectors for wired connection and charging. Then it remains to find the headphones in the corresponding menu of the gadget and connect without entering a password. We tried to connect both headsets in parallel to a device running Windows 10 and made sure that they did not support multi-point. The complete list of codecs and their modes, obtained using the Bluetooth Tweaker utility, is absolutely identical for them. With a wired connection, everything is simple: the headphones can work in passive mode. Turn off the power, stick a wire with a mini-jack connector (3.5 mm) into the device - you're done. True, the wires on both headsets are of a very low level of quality, and on the HD116 it is also short, which makes its use extremely inconvenient. Management and operation Wearing the tested headphones is very uncomfortable for three reasons, which we already talked about a little higher. The first is a small hole in the ear pads, leading to constant pressure on the curl of the auricle. The second - not the highest-quality leatherette, because of which the ears quickly get hot. Well, the third is the almost complete absence of the possibility of rotation of the cups, which often leads to their loose fit. The latter, incidentally, does not affect the "leakage" of sound in the best way: what is happening in your headphones will be perfectly heard by everyone around. Both models are controlled using a three-button panel. Side keys are responsible for adjusting the sound with short presses, with a long - switch tracks. The average of a single click controls playback and answering a call, with a double press, it rings to the last number dialed. With autonomy, everything is not bad, but not as much as the manufacturer claims. At HD200, at an average playback volume, we got twice a little more than 15 hours of work instead of the promised 20. Perhaps, if you reduce the volume to a minimum, you can "squeeze" 20, but that makes no sense. The working day will definitely last - it's already wonderful. The HD116 claims up to 24 hours of autonomy with less battery power. This was not believed at first, and expectations were not deceived: in reality, the headphones barely stretched for 14 hours at a volume slightly above average. The stability of the wireless connection of headsets is below average; in the open air they regularly "lose" the source, which leads to interruptions in sound. The quality of the microphone also leaves much to be desired - the interlocutors hear everything, but complain of a "voice like from a barrel" and other unpleasant effects. Talking in a noisy environment is difficult, you have to raise your voice very much - you begin to recall why in more "advanced" headsets you need a noise reduction system, which today is already perceived as something ordinary and familiar. Sound and frequency response measurements Well, now the most interesting. The manufacturer promises an "ultra-strong bass effect" in promotional materials HD200. And yes, there are plenty of low frequencies here. At the same time, the bass is "bubbling", which interferes with the perception of the already very slurred midrange. The sound merges into porridge, and the "raised" middle, which theoretically should add intelligibility to the vocals, evokes vivid associations with listening to a radio point somewhere in the kitchen. In the end, everything is very bad, even by the standards of budgetary Chinese decisions. Take a look at the frequency response graph. We draw readers' attention to the fact that the frequency response graphs are provided solely as an illustration to demonstrate the main features of the sound of the tested headphones. Do not draw conclusions from them about the quality of a particular model. The actual experience of each listener depends on many factors, ranging from the structure of the hearing organs to the used ear pads.

There is really no sub-bass, the middle is raised, somewhere between 200 and 300 Hz there is a small dip - here it is boom and "wailing" bass. The hump in the lower part of the medium, with a subsequent dip extending up to 4 kHz, is responsible for the "radio point effect" and extremely inexpressive sound. You can talk on the phone using such a headset, but listening to music is not worth it. A wired connection usually bodes slightly better sound quality, but not in this case. Just note that all measurements were carried out for one installation of headphones on the stand - changes in the schedule are associated exclusively with the transition to a different type of connection.

And the changes, I must say, are noticeable. Bass finally stepped forward, eclipsing absolutely everything with its "mumbling". The dip in the upper-middle has become even deeper, the sound of instruments and vocals is finally "crushed". If the sound with the wireless connection was bad, then with the wired it suddenly became even worse. However, it seems bad until exactly until you listen to HD116. Slurred bass, a midrange dip, whistling and rustling in the high-frequency range - just a reference bad sound.

And this is with the "Bass function" turned on, activated by the corresponding button, which we talked about a little higher. If with her the sound is simply terrible, then without her, it is already something beyond good and evil. Wired connection practically does not change anything, which suggests that the matter is not in the built-in DSP or codecs, but in the design features of the headphones.

Summary Usually we try to approach the tested headphones with a fair amount of positive mood - to find their own usage scenarios for them, some kind of small, but their own audience. They fit fully and comfortably over my ears, I have a huge head and these are plenty large enough without putting any strain on my head. They have soft cloth ear-pads, a comfortable cushion across the top, and a sturdy fit.Additionally I have no real complains about build quality. Though I havent really put it through a rigorous test, admitedly. There are metal components, particularly the brackets, that attach to the ear phones, but Im not sure if its metal all the way through the headstrap.Sound quality is fine, but nothing special, you may even have some EQ problems with it being too basey or too quiet, but again, Im running this through a Focusrite USB pre-amp and that is probably more of the problem. These are not a 3.5mm system, it is a 6.3mm set, so you will need some way to interface with whatever system you are plugging them into.The biggest concern I have with the set is, like many broadcast-centric headphones, they are using a coiled wire, which is good for being able to move around in a small space, but could be really awkward and generally bad for a more casual experience. Same thing with music, nothihg but clean, beautiful sound in all ranges, nothing over or underpowered. Build quality is very good, theyre sturdy but light. The earpads are soft and plush. Overall Im impressed with sound and build quality. If I had to find a negative, they could have included some kind of storage. Yes theyre intended for fixed studio use, but even a cheap storage bag would have been nice. And while the headband padding is adequate, the wrap is kinda cheap feeling. Genuine leather would be nice.Please see my pic of these hooked to the Fiio E11 amp and my iPad. The E11 amp powers these very nicely. I can hear the difference switching from low to hi gain, or switching between the three EQ options which produce progressively heavier bass. Hi gain and EQ 2 for me. Very clean sound with good balance. Yes there are better amps out there, perhaps down the road. For the budding audiophile though, this combination is very tough to beat. Glad I took my time. Design and Build Quality

In the design department, the Edifier W830BT won’t be winning any awards plainly because of their choice of material. The headphone is made mostly of plastic with the exception of the metal bracket that runs underneath the head strap. Our unit came in black and grey color tones that help boost the headphones appeal and aesthetics.

The headphones come with a 90° swivel ear cup that helps in placing them in the carry case and adds to the overall comfort of the headphone. If you don’t like carrying a case, the W830BT comes with hinges above the earcups. This allows them to be folded in on themselves for compact storage. There are controls on the right earcup, and the charging port is on the left earcup along with the 3.5mm socket for wired use.

Comfort and Fit

The W830BT is comfortable to use for long listening sessions. The clamping force from the metal bracket is not too tight. The headphone is lightweight which basically helps to eliminate the pressure on the top of your head. These ear cans fit perfectly over the ear, and the soft padding around the strap ensures an equal measure of comfort on top. It doesn’t come with ANC, but the plush earpads help in isolating and blocking out moderate outside noise and also prevent noise leaks.

Battery Life and Bluetooth Connectivity

This is where the Edifier W830BT shines, it’s one of the major selling points of the headphone. It offers nearly 95hrs of battery life. The fact that you don’t need to charge this headphone every day got me sold. The W830BT can have 2 devices connected at the same time, they use Bluetooth 4.1 and are AptX compatible. The connectivity range is excellent, it connects up to 10m and I had no issues with audio dropouts. You have your NFC on the left earcup so you can pair with your device with a single wave. This is meant for Android devices only. The left earcup also features the micro USB charging port – covered by a rubber flap – and also the 3.5mm audio jack. The 3.5mm audio jack is helpful if your Edifier W830BT runs out of juice.

Controls and Functions

The Edifier W830BT has a singular control button on the underside of the right earpiece. It’s positioned slightly to the rear in a place that’s ideal to access with your thumb. The center of this button has a raised surface which is easy to locate by touch alone.

On the right earcup of the Edifier W830BT, there’s a LED there, alongside 3 little holes for the microphone, and the main controls. These 3 buttons function as such:

Sound Quality

I’ve spent a couple of weeks with this headphone, mostly trying to drain the battery to see if it would last as advertised. At some point, I had to remind myself that this headphone really cost $70 because its performance was above expectation.

Bass

The bass on the W830BT is full, but it’s not overemphasized. There is great depth to the bass, enough to distinguish different instruments and neutral enough not to drown out the rest of the sound.

Midrange

The midrange is smooth and fatigue-free, you’ll experience it more over genres which require a detailed midrange.

Treble

The treble has some presence and is not completely drowned out.

Separation and Soundstage

Instrument separation is average, enough to distinguish different instruments. The soundstage of the Edifier W830BT is pretty much alright too.

Conclusion

If you are in the market for an affordable, quality Bluetooth headphone, you just can’t go wrong with the Edifier W830BT. It’s perfect for the daily or longer commutes, thanks to its outstanding battery life. The mere fact that pricier headphones that cost four times its amount can’t boast of longer playtimes gives it a Tech My Money approval badge.

Audio-Technica ATH-A990Z Art Monitor Closed-Back Dynamic Headphones: Electronics

I have owned the Audio Technica ATH-A990z for just under two months and have been using it daily. It really surprises me that this doesn't have any reviews considering the success of the previous iteration of this headphone, the ATH-A900x. I really don't often do reviews but I really think this headphone does deserve praise. Here is a bit of background and context of where I'm coming from. If you don't care just scroll down to the (SOUND) portion.I mostly listened to open backed headphones. My first real headphone where my Audio-Technica AD900 (the original open back, non Xs). They had an amazing midrange, soundstage, and imaging. But they had absolutely no bass and highs that were very accurate but on the edge of being sibilant. I ran them off a Yamaha AV receiver that had a decent headphone output and it really brought down the highs to acceptable levels. I used tone controls included in the receiver to bring up the bass up to enjoyable levels. I also added extra padding in the ear cups to stop the drivers from toughing my ears That was my daily driver for nearly 3 years before I broke them from constantly sitting on them accidentally when ever I left them on my computer chair. I absolutely loved they sound of theses headphones (after modifications) and is partly the reason why I decided to get the A990z. I had gotten the raved Phillips SHP9500 to replace my old workhorse, but those sounded extreme boring and dull compared the AD900. Very comfortable and nothing sounded wrong on them, but they made my entire music collection sound the same and nothing stood out. I wanted to experience that Audio Technica magic again, and I also need a closed backed headphone this time (my noisy little nephew lives with us now!). I look into the newly refreshed Art Monitor Z series, the A990z being right in my price point. I also have the TEAC AI-301DA headphone out as my new source audio output. I mostly listen to electronic (Aphex Twin, BOC, Chris Clark, etc..) music with some occasional instrumental orchestra or jazz.(SOUND [with stock pads])Simply put, these headphones are fun and exciting sounding while still being very accurate and concise. The imaging/sound separation and soundstage is pretty good for this closed back headphone (These work very well with gaming!). Despite what the title and name say these are not that good for sound monitoring and engineering (although they are much better than ATH-M50x in that regard). The sound is V shaped, emphases on bass and highs but not overdone. The bass goes deep and has quite a bit of impact. These are not bass cannons but was I pleasantly surprised at much low end it pumps out (though maybe that's just my open back preference showing). Mids are still very present and wonderful, but not on front stage and like my old AD900. High are emphasized but nowhere sibilant like Audio Technicas of past and is very accurate. It also remained me of my AD900, but without the harshness. As with most closed headphones, these do indeed sound closed. There is soundstage, but not a whole lot and not enough to WOW most people like really good open backs. Imaging is very good, like AD900, but I clearly remember the AD900 being better(COMFORT [with stock pads])If you know anything about AT's 3D wing system then you know that comfort might be a hit more miss (fortunately it's usually works with most people, myself included). There are some problems to note. The headphone will feel like its sliding off your head at first, though once you break them in and start wearing them after a while that feeling will subside. One thing that didn't subside was a pinching feeling on the pads. The pads themselves are quite comfortable and soft, made of high quality faux [?] leather. I personally don't like like any type leather touching my ears, I've been more inclined to cloth or velour pads. But the real problem is that they are too shallow to offer any support on the head and the inner diameter of the ear hole is too small for most. My ears are not big and they fit uncomfortably tight in them. I would image anyone with larger ears would simply not fit in these. Fortunately, you can change the ear pads, thought most pads that are not made specifically for the Art Monitor series will be a REALLY tight fit. Some wont fit at all, but will some will (Like HiFiMAN Pads and Brainwavz Pads). The stock pads are the only flaw that come with the A990z.(DESIGN)There not much to say if you familiar the AT design with their A series of Headphones. 3D wing design. Up, down, left, and right articulating earcups. Angled drivers. These also have a really nice fixed single 3 meter braided cable, which is curiously exclusive to the A990z within its own line up. The higher end models also don't have Up and Down articulating earcups for some reason. These are not the best in isolating sound, but it works well enough and keeps crying children noises at bay, more so that any open back. These are very efficient and not hard to drive. They can be driven off a most smartphones or a PC headphone jack to unsafe levels of loud. Be warned though, they are quite sensitive will pick up noise if your audio output is sub-par or dirty. These can actually pick up a constant low hissing in my TEAC AI-301DA, which I never realized was there with my Phillips SHP9500. I really have no idea if the A990z will scale well with high end equipment, but it certainly wouldn't hurt. The cool dark green and reflective chamber ring is very nice (the pictures don't do it justice).(SOUND and COMFORT [with Brainwavz Hybrid Memory Foam Earpad])So I got tired of using the stock pads and constant pinching sensation it had. Brainwavz Hybrid Memory non-angled pads was one known pad that was able to (barely) fit on AT Cans. These are pain and will take like 20 mins as you struggle to get them on, but persevere though and you will get them on. Having smaller hands also helps. I only hoping for a comfort increase and not much else, but I got much more than that. The sound did change for the better in my opinion. The soundstage increased, really helps it sound less closed and congested, not to really big levels like my AD900 but it gets damn close, especially for a closed back design. The imaging/sound separation and mids is now FANTASTIC and really reminds me of AD900. Highs didn't really change that much but does sound a little more spacious and accurate. Bass is much more tight and accurate, particularity in the lower spectrum. There is less low end bass slam which makes it sound more neutral over all (the low bass was quite accentuated for my taste). Midbass still punchy and tight. Comfort is simply perfect now. My ear fit in the cups now, there is no sliding sensation with the headphones anymore. No more pinching feeling on my ears and the pads are much more breathable. For just a little extra, these pads are so worth it.(OVERALL)Again, the only thing that holding these back from a 5 star are the flawed earpads. The would be great if they gave it more depth and made more room for the ears. Other than that, these are fantastic closed back performer. The sound is really geared towards fun, but still that Audio Technica precision that most audio snobs will enjoy. AT struck a really good balance here, whether it was by accident or design.The lower end A550z are said to sound like a improved A700x, but are not made in Japan. The higher end A1000z is said to sound just same as the A990z, but with a littler more of everything (At double the cost no less!). And the flagship A2000z are said to be a VERY different headphone from all the rest. For the asking price, I say its well worth it. And personally, I will see no need to upgrade past this headphone in the coming years.
