Phish’s Bakers Dozen Is The Epitome Of The Collision of Food And Rock
The genre-bending, Vermont-based jamband Phish has long been a source of conflict among music fans, the foursome’s meandering space-sections beloved by some and derided by many. But any music fans interested in fan loyalty, unique performances, and the convergence of food and rock should be paying attention to the band’s ongoing run of 13 (!) shows at Madison Square Garden in NY, where a partnership between the band and a tiny donut shop in Pennsylvania has become a legendary, ongoing chapter in the band’s 3-decade career.
That donut shop, Federal Donuts, is giving out free donuts to the first couple-thousand fans through the door each night of the run, with the donut flavor announced ahead of time by the band -- and then riffed on over the course of the night, creating a sort of guessing-game among the band’s fans before each night’s show (not by accident, the first promo for the show also found donuts running amok in NY, and limited-edition tickets also are in the shape of the tubular sweets). The opening night offered up gratis Coconut Donuts; the band proceeded to play the obscure Junior Senior disco-rock song “Shake Your Coconuts” to open the show, ostensibly introducing the gag to its fans, while Harry Nillson’s “Coconut” made an appearance later in the show.
Tumblr media
(photo: https://twitter.com/112atMSG) At this point, eight shows into the run, the band’s veered off that script only slightly: following Strawberry night (”Strawberry Fields Forever,” natch) and Red Velvet (a duo of Velvet Underground songs), the band played a “Jam Filled” night that found them expanding songs that usually are more concise; last night’s show, which featured donuts covered in “Jimmies” -- known to anyone outside of Philly as “Sprinkles,” found the band playing two rarities, “Col. Forbin’s Ascent” and “Harpua,” both of which reference a fictional character named -- you guessed it -- Jimmy. During “Harpua,” bassist Mike Gordon and Trey Anastasio sat on chairs, front-stage, and discussed a NY Times article about how the universe is donut shaped; the show ended with the first-ever run-through of “The Wind Cries Mary” (get it??)
Basically, Phish has now accomplished what every music festival has been trying to do for years: by making this Bakers Dozen run about both the donuts and the tunes, fans are discussing food and music in equal measure. They’re off tonight, but Tuesday finds the band serving up Maple donuts -- and, presumably, a song or two that reference the flavor, though fans thus far have been hard-pressed to find any choices that seem to make sense. For the Bakers Dozen, unpredictability and absurdity, though, are clearly king -- well, that and sugary deliciousness.  -- Jeff Miller

22 years ago: Loring Commerce Centre - Limestone, ME - 1997
Phish • August 16, 1997 • Loring Commerce Centre • Limestone, ME
Set 1: Makisupa Policeman -> Harpua[1] > Chalk Dust Torture, Theme From the Bottom > Punch You in the Eye > Ghost > Ginseng Sullivan, You Enjoy Myself > Train Song > Character Zero, The Squirming Coil
Set 2: Wolfman's Brother -> Simple -> My Soul, Jam -> Slave to the Traffic Light > Rocky Top > Julius[2]
Set 3: Halley's Comet -> Cities[3] -> Llama > Lawn Boy, Limb By Limb > Funky Bitch[4]
Encore: Contact > Loving Cup
[1] Picked up where the Clifford Ball Harpua left off. [2] Intro performed a cappella with finger snaps. [3] Trey altered lyrics to reference "Fishman sleeping in the daytime." [4] Fireworks.
This was the first show of The Great Went festival. Harpua picked up where the Clifford Ball Harpua left off. After Chalk Dust, Trey remarked that the first three songs served as the soundcheck, which the band did not do before the show. The jam out of Simple, the beginning of My Soul, and the jam before Slave included Odd Couple theme teases. The jam before Slave also contained an Entrance of the Gladiators tease. Halley’s Comet included On Your Way Down teases. The lyrics in Cities were changed to reference Fishman sleeping in the daytime. The Julius intro was partially performed a cappella with finger snaps. Funky Bitch featured a fireworks display behind the stage that culminated as the song ended. After the show, the members of Phish DJ’d under pseudonyms at a festival tent in what has become known as the “Disco Set.”

1995-06-23: Phish, Waterloo Village, Stanhope, NJ
Tumblr media
Another Phish show at Waterloo Village. I heard they have started having shows there again...it would be awesome if Phish played there again. Especially since this is the closest Phish show to the Rhombus.
I think I attempted to record this show. We got in late (still had not figured out patcher etiquette). Show was already started so obviously no one was going to let met patch. I set my old school Marantz cassette recorder on the ground in the section and let it roll. That tape no longer exists and obviously didn’t sound that great.
Also managed to get in with a video recorder. I had no idea this wasn’t allowed and got pulled back stage and had the tape take away from me. I learned my lesson...if your gonna record against the rule always carry a blank tape to pawn off to security. Of course that doesn’t work anymore since there are no tapes.
Show was pretty good. I fucking hate Abba (almost as much as The Eagles), but laughed when they did a short cover of Waterloo. Also of interest that 3 out of my first 5 Phish shows had a Harpua. Not the same now.
Setlist:
SET 1: Simple > Chalk Dust Torture, Prince Caspian, Reba[1], Ginseng Sullivan > Free > Taste, You Enjoy Myself
SET 2: Runaway Jim -> The Lizards, The Wedge, Run Like an Antelope , Harpua[2] -> Jam[3] -> Llama[3], Good Times Bad Times[3]
ENCORE: A Day in the Life
[1] No whistling.
[2] Unfinished; with verse of Abba's Waterloo.
[3] John Popper on harmonica.
Reba did not have the whistling ending. Harpua was unfinished; Jimmy played an Abba record (which led to a verse of Abba’s Waterloo), decided that he hated Abba and thought that maybe a little rocking harmonica would tighten it up. John Popper then came out for to play harmonica on a jam that led into Llama. Llama and GTBT also featured John Popper on harmonica. It's Magic was part of the soundcheck's My Sweet One Refrain Medley.

It’s been 3 days since the Baker’s Dozen ended and people are still high off that experience. I certainly cannot get enough and have been going through each of the shows. We managed to swing the July 30th show. It was my first birthday show and the Jimmies donut. I had hopes for a Harpua and couldn’t imagine them passing up the opportunity, but with Phish you never know. And they were set on…

Recommended: ‘88-’89
2/7/88 : Timber Ho: Aggressive full band attack.  GTBT>DEG: Neato atonal solo into DEG.
2/8/88 Hood: All there: extended intro, long sustains and hyperactive flourishes at the end of the jam.
3/11/88 Antelope: Expressive, quiet (relatively) build up kicks into another gear.
5/15/88 Curtain With: Long sustain notes lead to a cascading ending.
6/15/88: Timber Ho: Piano, Bass and Guitar all weave in, around and through each other. Whipping Post: Trey counts out Antelope, says “Fuck that” all leads to an Atonal jam, triumphant coda.
6/19/88 Suzy: Actual variation within. No seriously, a version that gets inside the notes.
6/21/88 Whipping Post: Wide ranging deconstruction that almost veers towards Stash territory.
7/23/88 Curtain With>Dave’s Energy Guide>Curtain With: Peak ‘80s Phish
7/30/88 Timber (Available on the Colorado ‘88 release): Bursting with ideas. Maybe the best Timber in a year full of good one’s.
8/5/88 YEM>Cities>DEG>Cities: Maybe the canonical sequence of ‘80s Phish, or ‘88 at the very least.
8/13/88 A-Train: That Johnny B. Fishman Jazz Ensemble Tightness.
9/8/88 YEM: Tightly wound outro & distorted vocal jam.
9/24/88 Whipping Post: The start of the proto-nirvana section 2nd jam in Whipping Post, a staple of fall ‘88.
10/29/88 Whipping Post: See 9/24...
11/11/88 David Bowie: Soaring full band jam. Whipping Post: more nirvana volume swells!
2/6/89 La Grange: 1989 is the year that every La Grange boils over.
2/7/89 Mike's>I Am Hydrogen>Weekapaug: The platonic ideal of an ‘89 Mike’s Groove. Maybe the 1st instance of the infinite sustain capabilities of the Languedoc.
3/3/89 Antelope: I wrote “spinning whirlpools in boiling water” in my notebook. That makes no sense.
3/30/89 Makisupa: Dreamy volume swell fadeout.
4/20/89 Harpua: 4/20, Full Moon party, at “The Zoo”, with a narration about a dog who gets shot in the ass.
4/30/89 Antelope: Bubbling arpeggios appear out of nowhere until your typical screaming madness ensues.
5/6/89 Slave: Swelling feedback bliss jam. Slave finds its ‘80s zen space all to briefly. Highest recommendation for this and 5/9.
5/9/89 Slave: See 5/6.
9/21/89 McGrupp>Who Do? We Do!>Bowie: McGrupp>Who Do? We Do! becomes a setlist staple in the second half of ‘89. Most end with a segue to Ac/Dc Bag, this one ends with a Bowie that moves from placid to stabbing.
10/20/89 Whole Show: My personal favorite of the year. A relentless 1st set, proto-Giant Country Horns for the whole 2nd set, and quickie 3rd set cherry on top. 10/20-22 would make for good box set material someday.
10/21/89 Wilson: A little extra vamping and scatting
10/22/89 YEM: Patient, logical build. Ya Mar, Divided Sky: Crisp ‘89ness to both of these.
11/10/89 Hood: Fluttering arpeggios and time bending sustain. My favorite version of the year.
11/30/89 SOAMelt: Odd shaped themes build to a DEG jam that boils over rapidly.
12/9/89 Mike's Groove: A relentless, near twenty minute suite that’s the best in a month of excellent versions.
12/15/89 YEM: A low register organ burble from page is the platform for a full band crescendo.

23 years ago: Plattsburgh Air Force Base - Plattsburgh, NY - 1996
Phish • August 17, 1996 • Plattsburgh Air Force Base • Plattsburgh, NY
Set 1: The Old Home Place, Punch You in the Eye, Reba[1] > Cars Trucks Buses, The Lizards, Sample in a Jar, Taste, Fee[2] -> Maze, Suzy Greenberg
Set 2: The Curtain > Runaway Jim, It's Ice > Brother[3], Fluffhead, Run Like an Antelope > Golgi Apparatus > Slave to the Traffic Light
Set 3: Wilson > Frankenstein, Scent of a Mule[4], Tweezer, A Day in the Life, Possum > Tweezer Reprise
Encore: Harpua[5]
[1] No whistling. [2] Trey sang verses through megaphone. [3] Ben and Jerry on vocals. [4] Page/Fish Mule Duel. [5] Unfinished.
This was the second show of The Clifford Ball festival. Reba did not have the whistling ending. Trey sang the verses of Fee through a megaphone. Before the second set, Trey paid tribute to Aaron Stein of Syracuse, who was front row center for every show of the tour. The first Brother since August 2, 1993 (258 shows) featured Ben and Jerry on guest vocals. Wilson included a Heartbreaker tease. Antelope featured a female acrobat twirling in the rigging, suspended above the stage in a circus-like fashion. Scent of a Mule featured a Page/Fish duel instead of the typical Page/Trey duel. Tweezer had big trampolines on each side of the stage and more circus shenanigans. A stunt plane circled overhead during Tweezer Reprise and Harpua. Harpua was unfinished; it was completed on August 16, 1997 at The Great Went.
