I did say I will write a Hansheng James Bond!au one of these days and I am proud to say that I kept my word 😤
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Pairing: Han Chen (Memory Lost)/Luo Fusheng
Tags: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Inspired by Casino Royale (2006), Humor, Action/Adventure, Action & Romance, Flirting, James bond-typical fastburn, Undercover Missions, Bai Yu/Zhu Yilong Character Combinations
Word count: 6825
Summary
"Yes you are," Luo Fusheng says appreciatively, his eyes raking the stranger's frame: a well-fitted black suit, immaculate hair, an expensive watch and a gaze of someone who doesn't take orders from anyone - this is officially the first time Fusheng is happy he is not left unsupervised. The Task Force definitely delivered on that front.
"Han Chen, and please lose the grin. It's hard to treat you seriously," the man says, and Luo Fusheng's heart skips a beat at the man being so unnecessarily mean.

Instincts & Trust
Re: A Familiar Stranger (spoilers!)
I can't remember the last time I saw or read a male lead saying he was going to trust someone based on his instinct.
Seriously - if (male) writers go that route, it's almost always a female who's relying on instinct, and 1) if they actually understand female intuition/instinct, then the people around her ignore it, or 2) if they don't understand female intuition, it's the female being dramatic or imaginative.
So to see Hansheng not only use logic but instinct to judge his new wife is so awesome.
But they don't stop there with his depth! Even when things point to her being a conspirator, he leans on what he's seen of her character, and again, his instinct that she's someone he can trust , to stay firmly on her side.
On Shi Qi's side, though she knows a bit about him from their past, because she's got another's face and is having to work for the prince's side (unwillingly), she could've tried to deceive him up until she could get her face back.
But she almost always tells him the truth, and when she can't, she's frank about that, too. She trusts that he will treat her respectfully despite the disguise between them.
Even if she thinks the face exchange is too outrageous to explain (I don't blame her there), she all but admits to being the girl from the bandits' hideout (village?) when he says all those things to "Shen Qin" hoping they'll reach Shi Qi.
I guess I'm just happily shocked to watch a couple who ACTUALLY trusts each other when there are so many logical reasons not to. Longer c-dramas should borrow a page here - you can still have crazy dramatics without the couple's relationship going through the grinder.
Also, the fact that they give each other space when they think they've been drugged with an aphrodiasic?? is so??? respectful?!?! Even though they weren't drugged a bit, lol.

WIZARD - Who is your favourite character in this WIP? Describe them!
okay I'm finally answering these.
wait, do I stick to a wip? I'm gonna go back and forth between Wuxia and Pirate story because they're playing flag football in my head trying me make me think about them. (the ref is my very vague suits fanfic and it's taking up a lot of game time)
okay! in Pirate Story my favorite character is:
Lysandris, I think. Mariyen is such a good, interesting female character - who is a point of view character - and she's fascinating to write. but my boy! I'm just so fond of guys that find people who make them want to turn their life around (Jet coded lol). Mariyen being more morally grey than he is marks a turning point in his life where he finally has to decide what kind of person he wants to be. Lysandris is one of those people who is very pragmatic, but also wants to believe in wishing on a star, a guy who's seen a lot of darker stuff in his life, but who clings onto all the tiny bits of goodness he can find. for a while, he wasn't sure how much he wanted to fight for being a better man, but when faced with Mariyen (yes, I'm aware I'm writing another Jet and Rune, I do NOT care), he figures out that he really does. and he wants to prove to her that she can find good things in the world, too. (despite them being Jet/Rune coded on the surface, I never write the same characters twice, so it's still so much fun to work out their specific dynamic in this very different world and setting)
Wuxia story:
it's Hansheng, actually. I'm having a lot of fun working out Jialin's struggles, especially with always choosing to prioritize her goals over her feelings, but then her choice to allow those feelings anyway, but! my boy Hansheng is stealing my heart. not least of all because my faceclaim is Ryan Cheng, but he is so, like, bewildered all the time? his marriage was ordered by someone with authority over him, and posed a real and significant danger given that his newly appointed wife was from a rival political family. plus, she's a trained assassin, so there's that. and yet, as time goes on and Hansheng is making his plans and going through with his plots and schemes, Jialin is not actually stopping him from reaching his goals? but he doesn't know what she wants, or if he can really start to trust her.
but then there's a set of incidents, in which she goes from subtly protecting him to actively putting herself in danger when he never would've asked her to. and they only have (vaguely, sort of kind of) heart-to-heart conversations when they're both bleeding. which, you know, is still rather delicious.
thanks for asking, Rarity
(also Michigan touchdown!)

Fanfiction writing ask: 2, 18, 24, 48 <3
2. Where do you get your fic ideas?
Oh gosh, all over the place. Right now I'm feeling like I will never have an idea again in my life 😩, but usually a mental image will grab me enough to play around with the idea until I have enough to jot down some initial lines, usually dialogue.
Fic exchanges or wishlists or bingo cards are great! Other fanworks frequently inspire me! Sometimes I want to write a kink and think about how it would work for a particular pairing, until I feel I got the right angle. Brainstorming with a friend in chat is usually the best.
18. Do you enjoy research? Which fic of yours required the most research?
The kind of "research" I usually have to do is checking canon for specific events or even just vague timeline things, because my memory is terrible. I don't love it, because when I'm in a writing mood I'd rather just write. But I couldn't bear to get something noticeably wrong, so!
Not sure if it counts as research, but I think the most care I took with a fic was the very first Zhubai piece I wrote, because RPF lacks the veneer of fantasy that lets you get away with some things in Guardian fic. So I thought a lot about shooting schedules and language and some cultural aspects that might matter, and talked to people for advice.
(For the Hansheng series, I tried to look up if lube existed in 1920s Shanghai, and I think the answer was yes. Oh, and for this bit of RPF self-indulgence, I learned a few things about analog photography. That's the extent of my research!)
24. How do you choose whose POV to write in?
Huh, never thought about that. I think the POV usually comes baked into the idea, for me? If I do have to make a choice, I guess it would be the character who knows enough to make the plot happen. Or doesn't know anything, which makes his reactions interesting.
48. Who is your favorite character to write for? Has this changed since you’ve started writing for that fandom?
My very first fic in the fandom was RPF, and Zhu Yilong is still the character I love to write the most. Doesn't even have to be the POV character. I just like thinking about him.
For POV, absolutely Zhao Yunlan. I love when he's flippant or funny or a bit mean and suddenly full of insight and deep feeling, and I love writing all of that.

Well hello there! 6, 10, 17, 19 😈
Hello, dear <3
6. What is your darkest fear about writing?
That I am doing something terribly stupid without even knowing. That I cannot convey character's emotions properly and therefore what I think is interesting, is in fact flat and not engaging at all.
also commas.
10. Has a piece of writing ever “haunted” you? Has your own writing haunted you? What does that mean to you?
Good question about what "haunting" means, really. In the 'oh no I this story won't leave my head after I've written it' - no, nothing. If the 'I still feel ashamed about writing this' way, well, there are some works from my teenage years that are pretty much terrible but I see them as learning process really. I cringe at them from time to time and move on.
I am much more affected by other people's writing, there are some stories that stay with me forever, either because they were so good, or so disappointing that it still hurts.
17. Talk to me about the minutiae of your current WIP. Tell me about the lore, the history, the detail, the things that won’t make it in the text.
Uhhhh. Aside from our shared projects I have one, and that is Weilan derivatives HanSheng wuxia au. Not sure if there is anything interesting about it. I think I am pretty lost with it actually. So, nothing to report.
19. Tell me a story about your writing journey. When did you start? Why did you start? Were there bumps along the way? Where are you now and where are you going?
I really liked writing always, when I was in primary school I used to just create stories in my head about the places I've seen and visited, a lot of fantasy scenarios involving my way to school and all that. Sometimes I wrote them down, but I started writing stories as such in middle school? I think? I also keep travel journals.
Bumps along the way - a few. Mostly connected with unusally heavy indifference towards stories I cared about, plus that one moment when my sister told me 'yeah, I am happy you write, but I just don't like how you do it, sorry'. Which, is, of course her right and all, but it got me down for a while.
Where am I now and where I am going? Dunno. I find that I enjoy shared project the most, working with someone else and exchanging ideas, so I think I will do that?

Familiar Stranger 《虚颜》 review
Overall Rating: 3/5
Painter Shi Qi is dragged into a complicated plot when a mysterious young woman switches their faces and threatens her into marrying General Xiao Hansheng on her behalf. In a twist of fate, Shi Qi realizes she and Xiao Hansheng are not entirely strangers.
Cast: Ke Ying as Shi Qi, Song Zhaoyi as Shen Qin, Cheng Lei as Xiao Hansheng, Wang Zexuan as Prince Ning
Length: 18 episodes, (~10 minutes), or 8 episodes (~20 minutes)
Character Rating: 3/5
Plot Rating: 3/5
Aesthetic Rating: 2/5
This is a short drama with a small cast, which both gives it advantages and disadvantages in my book. I’m personally a fan of large-scale dramas with huge ensembles and many interconnecting story threads, which is far from what this drama can give, but for something I watched casually over three days, this drama isn’t slouching. Towards the ending, the plot spices up significantly, and that finally transition into the closing sequence left me feeling anything but unsatisfied. The acting isn’t phenomenal and the aesthetics are not anything special in the current climate of guzhuang, but those things don’t take away from the enjoyment of this show as a little thing to chill and watch for a couple hours.
Trigger Warnings: sexual assault, suicide
Where To Watch: (eng subs available) YouTube, Viki

KNIGHT - Pick one! Forbidden Love or Enemies-to-Lovers?
~@duckingwriting
I have only one active wip that contains romance, and it's both forbidden love and enemies to lovers, since Jialin and Hansheng are from rival political families who are only married because a royal said they should, and they believe for a long time that they can't love each other because they have different goals, and their respective families hate each other, and they assume they each hate the other one as well, so. yeah.
as for reading, I guess I'd go for enemies to lovers, but like, when it's clever and compelling, and not just "I hate you for ReasonsTM" and then "but I'm attracted to you so we're suddenly not enemies anymore." enemies to lovers is everywhere and I'll read it. but I don't really care about it.
I'm only into the romance in Wuxia story because both leads are asexual and also this is soft chinese fantasy, so the romance is entirely contained to internal monologue, yearning, high-tension conversations, soft conversations, and physical touch constrained by "I'm trying to keep you from dying" type stuff. maybe they'll kiss at the end.
can you tell I have no interest in being in a romantic relationship myself? I don't think it comes out in my stories at all. *cough*
thanks for asking, friend
