2. Got a rich investor (brother in law).. first called Wilsdorf and Davis (after brother in law Alfred Davis)
3. The name Rolex means nothing… it’s just an aesthetically pleasing combination of 5 letters.

La promozione dell’Oyster
Nel 1926 per dimostrare la resistenza della sua cassa Oyster alle infiltrazioni di acqua e polvere, il fondatore della Rolex orologi, Hans Wilsdorf, realizzò una campagna pubblicitaria senza precedenti per l’epoca. Non solo carta stampata, ma anche vere e proprie dimostrazioni pratiche. Nei negozi infatti veniva esposto in vetrina un orologio Rolex Oyster immerso in un acquario che continuava tranquillamente a ticchettare. Ancora più innovativa la mossa del 1927. L’orologio Rolex viene infatti messo al collo della giovane nuotatrice Mercedes Gleitze, nel suo tentativo di attraversare la Manica a nuoto. Il tentativo fallisce dopo svariate ore, ma non la dimostrazione di qualità e resistenza dell’Oyster che continua a funzionare perfettamente anche dopo la lunga immersione. Per celebrare l’impresa la Rolex orologi fa pubblicare un’inserzione a pagina intera sul quotidiano britannico Daily Mail annunciando il successo dell’orologio impermeabile e contestualmente creando il concetto di testimonial come lo conosciamo oggi.
La fossa delle Marianne
La Rolex orologi ha sempre avuto un rapporto privilegiato con l’acqua. Non solo Rolex Oyster o Rolex Submariner dunque ma una serie di orologi Rolex professionali nati proprio per le profondità marine e per chi ci deve lavorare. Il Rolex Sea-Dweller (abitante del mare) o il Rolex Deepsea (mare profondo) sono realizzati proprio per questi professionisti che lavorano sott’acqua a grandi profondità e, grazie a una particolare valvola per la fuoriuscita dell’elio, resistono a qualsiasi tipo di immersione, in acque libere, in sommergibile o in camera iperbarica.
Per ben due volte la Rolex orologi tra l’altro ha portato un orologio Rolex nel punto più profondo della terra, l’abisso Challenger nella fossa delle Marianne.
La prima volta addirittura nel 1960 quando un Deepsea Special è stato fissato ad un braccio esterno del batiscafo Trieste raggiungendo gli oltre 11 km sotto il livello del mare della depressione. La seconda volta nel 2012 con il sommergibile Deepsea Challenger guidato in solitaria dal regista James Cameron. Anche in questo caso l' orologio Rolex sperimentale agganciato all’esterno del sommergibile ha resistito perfettamente all’incredibile pressione. Nel 2022 tra l’altro è stata messa in commercio proprio l’evoluzione di questo prototipo, il Rolex Deepsea Challenge, capace di resistere a una profondità di 11.000 metri.
