Drum roll please…. in partnership with Laminex, today we share the finalists in the 2020 The Design Files + Laminex Design Awards!

From incredible Australian homes in the Residential Architecture category; to thoughtful, detailed craftsmanship in the Handcrafted category; to innovative and inspiring ideas in the Sustainable Design or Initiative category, the thing I love most about our Awards program is the broad range of projects it encompasses – big and small! It really presents such a thorough and varied snapshot of the design landscape in this country, and if this Awards program is anything to go by, there’s so much to celebrate.

We have 119 finalists (!) across 10 categories – Residential Architecture (supported by Brickworks), Interior Design (supported by DeLonghi), Landscape Design, Lighting Design, Furniture Design (supported by Jardan), Textile Design, Handcrafted, Sustainable Design or Initiative (supported by Country Road), Collaboration and Emerging Designer (supported by Phoenix Tapware).

The shortlisting process this year was not for the fainthearted! Over countless emails, Zoom calls and a couple of socially distanced meetings, we worked alongside our 25 judges to refine each shortlist. Honestly – it wasn’t easy, the calibre was so high across the board, and we’re so grateful for every single entry. THANK YOU to everyone who entered, and of course, to our expert judges for lending their time and wisdom to the process.

While each shortlisted project is listed below, the photographs here represent only a small sample of the lineup! You can see more about each finalist right now on our Awards website. We’ll be taking a closer look at all these projects over the coming months, as we get closer to our Awards Ceremony in November. (Fingers crossed on that!).

RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE

This category seeks to award one standout Australian residential architecture project. Ground-up builds, renovations and additions are all eligible within this category.

Sofas were the one product i had to give up when i moved from 44 to 50 main. There were amazing Hancock & Moore pieces and elegant Caracole amongst others. While i do miss their beauty and of course selling them...I don't miss moving them in and out and in and out and in and out... (that part was exhausting) Only one sofa made it to the 50 Main but we still sell plenty of comfy occasionaly chairs... New-Construction Home Ideas

Mike Stevens Homes was recently featured on Home Bunch (Southern-inspired Modern Farmhouse) and I am honored to have them back today to share this newly-built modern farmhouse. Here, the builder shares some important details:

“This home is a new-construction. The customers came to us knowing what they wanted and had many inspiration photos in mind that they wanted us to help bring to life while also keeping to the budget they had in mind. The stair railing is a great example of this. The couple moved to Knoxville knowing they would be retiring in the next few years and wanted a comfortable home to settle down in that fit their current needs as well as what they would like in future years. Another goal was to make sure their college age children would have a place to come home to on summer breaks and as they grow older. We helped them find a stock home plan (The Williamsburg from Visbeen) that was a very close fit to their needs and just needed a few small adjustments. As a custom home builder with a staff architect, even our stock floor plans get modified to some extent. The customers liked the modern farmhouse look and this plan really had a nice example of clean/simple lines that fit the modern farmhouse look. Part of the fun of the project was finding inspiration photos and ideas that would bring the modern farmhouse to the interior of the home as well as the outside.”

Equestrian Home Interior Design Ideas

Do you know the feeling you get in life at times when you see a good friend you haven’t seen in a long time? This is the feeling I am having for sharing this beautiful Equestrian home by Garrison Hullinger of Garrison Hullinger Interior Design. I remember falling in love with a gorgeous kitchen he designed back in 2010 and that was enough for me to become a big fan of his work. Since then I have shared many of his beautiful projects on the blog, which makes me think how wonderful it is to be able to share the work of people that have inspired me from the very beginning of the blog and that still inspire me after all of these years, after all of the trends. But more importantly, how wonderful it is to be able to be surrounded by talented and kind people, who year after year have allowed me to share their beautiful work with all you, my wonderful readers and friends! To say that I feel blessed for all of that is an understatement.

Here, Garrison shares more details about this exquisite home he had the pleasure to design:

“Sometimes you meet clients and you know you’re going to have more fun than normal. We know building a home is a very stressful point in our client’s life…but it has some added stress when it involves bull-dozing a parent’s home to make way for the new one. We were the home designer and interior designer for this project completing all the design for the build. Our clients have great trust in us to design the house for their blended family of five children. The 8,500 sq ft home sits on 40 acres and an equestrian farm.

Our job in designing can become a balance of desires…the husband wanted rustic elements and the wife wanted soft and elegant but we all agreed that we didn’t want the home to be traditional or modern farmhouse. This home from the front elevations to the powder wallpaper were not about impressing guests or wanting to please others. The design is really one that fits the family with great purpose.”

Equestrian Home Interior Design Ideas

“The entry has beams that come together to provide some interest and also set the tone for the rustic feel of the home.” – Garrison Hullinger.

“We took our clients to High Point Furniture Market in North Carolina to select all the furnishings for the home. During that several day trip we found the mirrored cabinets that are now flanking each side of the fireplace…we all felt like they really add a lot of character to the space. The furnishings are a bit more traditional and are all about comfort.” Garrison Hullinger.
