On Wednesday 15 October, 1902, on the front page of The Scotsman newspaper, a small advert appeared: “North British Station Hotel. This hotel in direct communication with Waverley Station is now open F.T. Burcher, hotel manager.”

According to the hotel’s official history, the North British was “a vanguard for the railway company which built it, a surrogate for the grand station they had never been permitted to erect in the sensitive site between Old and New Town.” The architecture, executed in golden sandstone, features towers and balconies galore. It’s a glorious mash-up of influences from across northern Europe. Expensive to build as well as to run – it gobbled upwards of 200 tons of coal every month – the hotel was seen as a “sign of the future heralded by the railways, the newly opened Forth Bridge and the electric lights switched on in Princes Street just seven years earlier”.

Nevertheless, some believed the Caledonian, which opened a year later, boasted the more advantageous location. And some detractors found the sheer size of the hotel gauche, complaining “it is coarse and obstructive at once”.

The hotel – working name “Waverley Station Hotel” – was the brainchild of George Wieland, a former NBR company secretary who retired to its board in 1890. Having toured some of the most lavish hotels in the world – where he realised the importance of having a banqueting hall to bring in business – he hired W Hamilton Beattie to draw up plans for Edinburgh. The hotel would have 300 bedrooms, 52 bathrooms, and 70 lavatories, and was designed to encourage the circulation of fresh air. Lifts shot people straight from the station into the hotel’s foyer, and beyond that, to rooms furnished with mahogany, leather and crimson moquette. It’s said that the bill for plants and flowers exceeded the bill for gas, and there was even a special machine to burnish the silver. Weiland made sure the new hotel’s cellars were full of the finest champagnes, hocks, ports, and whisky, the better to entice his ideal customers – wealthy, landed families moving between their multiple residences.

In 1922, the hotel became part of the London and North Eastern Railway Company and by all accounts the hotel sparkled from top to bottom, but after the Second World War, when the railways were nationalised, and Prestwick airport began getting transatlantic traffic, things began a slow downward trajectory. Even so, the hotel remained the destination for Edinburgh society events, be they corporate or personal. In 1983, British Rail sold off its rather faded North British Hotel. In 1988, it closed for refurbishment, it was in dire need of this, some of the rooms were looking a wee bit shabby, the wooden window frames unable to open fully, and how do I know this? Well I used to be the window cleaner in the hotel and the windows that didn't open meant I had to find one close by and edge along the crumbling sandstone ledges, the worst affected, and highest were on the south of the hotel and there was a six storey drop down to the train station below.

At the start of the 1990s, Balmoral International Hotels, an Edinburgh based company, bought the venue. In 1997, the Balmoral became the first hotel bought by Sir Rocco Forte as he assembled his portfolio of hotels. It currently boasts Scotland’s only Bollinger Bar, as well as the Michelin-starred Number One restaurant run by executive chef Jeff Bland, a spa, and ten function rooms accommodating up to 450 people.

Famous guests over the years have included Elizabeth Taylor, Michael Palin, Beyoncé and JK Rowling, who finished the last Harry Potter novel here, on 11 January, 2007, and then daubed her signature on a bust in her room.

A second wee link with the hotel, is Charles Forte, Grandfather of the present owner began his working life in my home town of Loanhead when he moved to Scotland from Italy.

Jacqueline Susann's Once Is Not Enough

THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS: When I was in graduate school, I saw the end of Guy Green’s JACQUELINE SUSANN’S ONCE IS NOT ENOUGH (1975, Criterion) — a title that would make even Andrew Sarris hate the auteur theory — stayed for the second feature and walked out shortly after ONCE IS NOT ENOUGH resumed, thereby proving that, at least for me, once was more than enough. I do not regret walking out on it then, nor do I regret watching it all the way through now. It’s an interesting study: the Hollywood version of ‘70s culture. Considering how far behind the times Hollywood is, it’s really more their version of ‘60s culture. Virginal January (Deborah Raffin) returns to the states after three years of surgery and rehabilitation following the screen’s funniest motorcycle accident. To her chagrin, she discovers her father (Kirk Douglas), a once-great film producer, has married a wealthy woman (Alexis Smith) to get out of hock (and possibly pay the hefty bills from that Swiss clinic she was in). While working through her daddy issues, she loses her virginity to her stepmother’s cousin (George Hamilton), goes to work for an oversexed old friend (Brenda Vaccaro) and falls for an impotent, alcoholic novelist (David Janssen). None of these people are human beings. The script, by Julius J. Epstein, makes of them a series of figures out a morality play on the dangers of the Electra complex. The cast does their best to bring life to the proceedings. Raffin is charming, Smith surprisingly nuanced (she clearly learned to act in the years since she wafted through all those Warner Bros. movies), Vaccaro hilarious, and Melina Mercouri, as a reclusive lesbian actress, underused. Janssen looks quite believably trapped by Raffin’s love for him, though at times you can’t help wondering if he didn’t just feel trapped in that wretched script. His scenes seem to go on forever, and it’s hard to blame him. His scenes seem to drag on forever, no matter how hard he tries. It all needs to be ratcheted up a bit, maybe by having Patty Duke run through every now and then screaming “Neely O’Hara! Neely O’Hara!” Much has been made of the role daddy love plays in Susann’s work, but from a modern vantage, this film really could be seen as her version of A DOLL’S HOUSE. Raffin starts out as her father’s doll. She’s even paralyzed when first we see her. When she comes home, Douglas and Smith try to run her life. Then she hooks up with Janssen, who expects her to drop everything to go to Hollywood with him, tells her he’ll leave her if she speaks to her father and finally dumps her because he just can’t do commitment. Then The Mancini Singers break forth with the title tune to make us think maybe that isn’t such a bad thing. As if we needed to be told.

Wolf Plains is a Late Adena culture group of 30 earthworks including 22 conical mounds and nine circular enclosures, located at the intersection of Mound Street and Gary Street a few miles to the northwest of Athens in Athens Township, Athens County, in the vicinity of The Plains, Ohio, originally known as Wolf's Plains, in a relatively flat terrace in an area of hilly terrain in southeastern Ohio's Hocking River valley. The terrace was formed by glacial outwash coming down the Hocking River, which became dammed at The Plains and found a new outlet to the northeast, leaving the terrace in place.

The Adena Culture was a Pre-Columbian Native American Culture that existed from 1000 B.C. to 100 A.D. in a time known as the Early Woodland Period. The Adena People existed throughout present day Ohio and its neighboring states. The Adena People were Athens County's first known residents. Their Culture can be traced between 88 B.C. and 100 A.D. Adena populations were scattered along the Hocking River and were constructing mounds like this one. Thousands of generations of Native Americans lived in the Hocking Valley. The Plains was the 2nd largest center of Adena activity in Ohio, and The Plains has the 3rd largest concentration of Adena burial mounds, and circular enclosures in the Eastern United States. The burial mounds contain remains, and there are theories that the circular enclosures could have ranged from sports arenas to clan initiation sites, or they could have held religious significance.

When settlers arrived on The Plains in the 1800s, they found 30 earthworks (conical mounds and circular enclosures), but only six mounds are still in existence today. The Wolf Plains Group was featured in Ephraim George Squier and Edwin Hamilton Davis's landmark publication Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley (1848). Their finished drawing was based on a sketch from 1836 by S. P. Hildreth, and contains some inaccuracies. Some of the clusters of mounds are rotated relative to their actual position, some are missing, and some are misplaced.

The Wolf Plains Group was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 31, 1974; at that time, 25 earthworks remained in good enough condition to qualify as contributing properties. In 2008 The Archaeological Conservancy purchased the site of one of the remaining earthworks, the Dorr 2 Mound, using emergency POINT funds; and it plans to purchase more as funds become available. The majority of the remaining earthworks in the complex are privately owned and are threatened with destruction as The Plains community expands. These mounds are significant and an important part of the area’s history.
