Contract delays and £10m repair bill hit Costain

A string of delays on major contracts and a repair bill for a historic project will put a dent in Costain’s half-year results.

The contractor issued a trading update today ahead of announcing results for the six months to 30 June 2019 on 21 August. 

Projects hit by delays to the timing of contract start dates and new awards include the M6 Smart Motorway, Preston distributor road and HS2 Southern Section main works. 

The M4 Corridor around Newport project was cancelled by the Welsh Government earlier this month. 

Costain said revenue for 2019 will be lower than previously anticipated and underlying operating profit for the full year is expected to be in the range of £38m to £42m.

Half year results will include a one-off charge of £9.8m in respect of a recent arbitration award in favour of Diamond Light Source Limited for the cost of remedial works required to the roof at the National Synchrotron facility which was completed in August 2006. 

The subcontractor who installed the roof would have been contractually liable for the remedial works but went into administration in November 2017.

Costain said trading on current contracts during the first half has overall been in line with expectations. 

New orders included the A19 improvement contract and long term AMP7 awards for Severn Trent Water, United Utilities and Yorkshire Water.

Revenue secured to date for FY2019 is £1.1bn with the group’s operating divisions expected to trade within the target margin range for the year.

Costain said its has a “robust balance sheet” including a strong net asset position and positive net cash, and expects to report an average month-end net cash balance for H12019 of £65m.

Chief executive officer Alex Vaughan will set out his ‘Leading Edge’ strategy for the business and its medium-term development next month.

Vaughan said: “Despite delays to the timing of certain contract start dates and new awards, our markets are strong, as evidenced by the breadth of our new contract awards in the first half.

“We have a strong balance sheet, profitable operations and a broad range of capabilities to support the growth of the business.

“Costain is well placed to secure the opportunities ahead of us.”

The Reserve Bank Wednesday retained its GDP forecast for the current fiscal at 7.4 per cent and said growth will accelerate further to 7.5 per cent in first half of 2019-20, driven by acceleration in investment activity.

The central bank said that the GDP growth in April-September of current fiscal has been broadly in line with RBI projection of 7.4 per cent for full fiscal.

Stating that acceleration in investment activity bodes well for the medium-term growth potential of the economy, the RBI called for strengthening of macroeconomic fundamentals.

"The time is apposite to further strengthen domestic macroeconomic fundamentals. In this context, fiscal discipline is critical to create space for and crowd in private investment activity," the RBI said in its fifth bi-monthly monetary policy.

"Based on an overall assessment, GDP growth for 2018-19 has been projected at 7.4 per cent (7.2-7.3 per cent in H2) as in the October policy, and for H12019-20 (April-September) at 7.5 per cent, with risks somewhat to the downside," RBI said.

India's economic growth fell to 7.1 per cent in the second quarter (July-September) of the current fiscal, from 8.2 per cent in the April-June period. The growth was 7.7 per cent in the January-March period.

The Central Bank said going forward, lower rabi sowing may adversely affect agriculture and hence rural demand. Financial market volatility, slowing global demand and rising trade tensions pose negative risk to exports.

However, on the positive side, the decline in crude oil prices is expected to boost India's growth prospects by improving corporate earnings and raising private consumption through higher disposable incomes, the central bank noted.

The price of Indian basket of crude oil fell below $60 to a barrel by end November, from $85 to a barrel in early October.

"There has been significant acceleration in investment activity and high frequency indicators suggest that it is likely to be sustained. Credit offtake from the banking sector has continued to strengthen even as global financial conditions have tightened. FDI flows could also increase with the improving prospects of the external sector," the RBI said.
