Finished Gundam Seed after 20 years, and here are some thoughts no one asked for:
- There's so many nepo babies. So many.
- Yzak gives off poodle vibes but a poodle that has eye crusties and may or may not be feral.
- Teenage drama in a warzone. I feel bad for the officers because they are also fairly young with bad interpersonal skills.
- Athren is running around driving a Gundam and Ferrari. Driving the Ferrari to his fiancée's house. ON A DRIVERS PERMIT. He's 15. When I was 15 I was lucky to get dropped off at the mall.
- Also, Athren gives off rich private school kid who played/plays tennis at his high school.
- These kids can be aged up to 18 year old university students, and the story would still make sense. Some of them are overly mature (Athren), and some of them are put into uncomfortable adult situations that make more sense for older teens.
- Okay, moving on, when Murrue told the kids to follow her until she could find someone else to figure out what to do with them—I don't think she ever thought that the authority figure would be her. It was so interesting watching her freeze and get challenged by Natarle. She clearly didn't want to be there but had no choice. It was fun watching her grow into her role.
- Everybody's fairly young. All the officers are in their 20's. Mu is 28, and Murrue and Natarle are 25 (occording to their wikis). It's like a bunch of 20 year olds (majority age of tumblr) trying to corral a bunch of 14 year olds to complete a single goal, and not get blown up in the process. Nightmare scenario for them.
- I forgot how sexist the early 00's were. It was cool seeing Murrue and Natarle brush it off. It gave me agent Carter "I know my value," energy. Y'know because sometimes when I'm in those situations, it's harder to brush off and not feel like shit.
- It was interesting seeing futuristic fashion ideas mixed with early 00s fashion. Sai, with his fire shirt/00s glasses/hair. Then, Natarle, whose style was clearly inspired by Trinity from the Matrix in her first scene (come on, the hair/long jacket/sunglasses).
- Walter's wife srsly looks like a Pokémon gym leader. Okay, and it was a choice to put a topless pic (I mean, it was clear, right?) of Walter's dead wife on his desk where everybody could see.
- The artists were really thirsty for a fighting robot show. Are all Gundam shows so thirsty? This was my first and most revisited one.
- Lastly, the original Ocean dub is still the best.

If Gundam Seed could go a little more explicit with Kira having sex with Flay in the hd remasters can we get a Sulemio kiss for a rerelease? The whole sex used to be up to interpretation after all.

Started up a Gundam Seed rewatch because of the movie, figured why not watch the HD Remasters on Crunchy since I haven’t seen them yet. And while I do appreciate them cutting the 2 recap eps, I definitely have some Thoughts on the edits now that I’m 38 eps in.
tl;dr: Why did they edit ep 27 like that
Starting with wtf is up with editing Nicol’s death to be more of an accident instead of Kira killing Nicol in the middle of a brutal fight where Kira’s backed into a corner after taking them on 2 (if you count Mu and his Skygrasper) to 4? Are the writers that desperate to make it look like Kira wasn’t directly responsible for a Supporting Character Death?
Meanwhile, Tolle’s death in the following episode isn’t edited at all; Athrun is still shown throwing Aegis’ shield at his Skygrasper, resulting in Tolle’s death. In the original, it comes off as something of a “An Eye for An Eye” moment - Kira and Athrun are now on equal footing in wanting to kill the other to avenge a friend.
But even more than that, the deaths served as a push for both Kira and Athrun to move forward to think for themselves about what they can do with their skills, that maybe being a part of Earth Federation/ZAFT isn’t really for either of them as both militaries’ leaders become more and more extreme the longer the war drags on. It spurs Kira to change how he fights in the Freedom - where he once reluctantly aimed to kill, Freedom’s higher specs and performance lets him aim to disable for a lower/no casualty fighting style. Sure, that comes back to bite him in Seed Destiny but for now it’s what Kira needs to be able to fight and protect the ones he cares for.
The edit also affects how later scenes get interpreted - shortly after, ZAFT attacks JOSH-A, the Earth Federation Headquarters in Alaska, and Kira intervenes in the conflict with the Freedom. Kira has an opportunity to outright kill Yzak in his Assault Shroud Duel by hitting the cockpit with his beam saber, but there's extra care to show Kira deliberately aiming lower to slice off the Duel's legs to force a retreat instead. That shot loses some of its impact without the context of Nicol's death behind it. Honestly, if they were going to have everyone act like Kira swung at the cockpit on purpose anyway why edit it?
On a lighter note, they crack me up with all the heavy emphasis on Princess Mode Cagalli when she spends so much time in pantsuits. She is, in many ways Lacus's opposite and I think it's genuinely hilarious if you were to put together all the time she's in a dress on screen, 90-95% of that screen time will be from an OP or an ED sequence.

Why you should watch Gundam SEED Destiny
It’s been a little while but it’s time to cover the second half of the Cosmic Era Gundam shows with Destiny, once again the “HD Remaster” version though this time it doesn’t cut out the recap episodes so there seemed to be little point in it really, forced 16:9 aside, but you know… I like consistency! The original SEED anime followed the original Gundam series quite closely for a lot of its run and while not as blatant Destiny does also have several things in common with Zeta Gundam, mostly a new protagonist who a bit of a knob. Let’s take a look at the first 14 episodes!
Two years have passed since the original series and peace has sustained but just as Orb leader Cagalli and her bodyguard “Alex Dino” (actually previous series secondary protagonist Athrun) meet up with the head of the PLANTS (SEED’s version of Space Colonies) at their Earth-based military site the place is attacked by Earth Federation soldiers / cyber-Newtype-alikes (known as Extended in the C.E.) Stella, Auel and Sting, who take three prototype Gundam suits. Luckily for ZAFT (the PLANTS military) there’s a fourth Gundam and a newly minted soldier called Shinn Asuka takes control of the Impulse and fights them head-on. So classic “protagonist finds himself piloting a Gundam in the heat of battle and ends up the pilot for the rest of the series” story, though at least Shinn is actually a pilot beforehand! Anyway, Athrun takes control of a Zaku, (which is something odd about Destiny: ZAFT’s new suits are all Zeon suits from the original MSG series! It was to celebrate the original series’ anniversary, if memory serves. Still weird though…) and along with a new ship called the Minerva the three Earth pilots are driven back to their own ship, which is of course captained by a mysterious man in a mask (sigh, can’t wait to talk about THAT character’s backstory later…) I will quickly mention that the Impulse is a Gundam formed by three separate planes joining together, a classic image but I can’t help think how impractical that is during combat, especially seeing all the other mobile suits fly out already whole and head straight into combat! What if 'Gundam SEED' was told from Flay's point of view? How would they approach it? Would it have been better?
I'm not super far into SEED (I'm on around episode 19?) so idk how her character develops and how that would change the story. Where she's at rn, taking the narrative from her perspective would make it lean much more in the teen drama aspect of SEED which, while I don't find it effective, is probably the funniest part of the show so I wouldn't be opposed to watching that.
Frankly SEEDs problems are a lot more structural. It's agonizingly slow especially when compared to 0079, which it takes plot beats from and stretches them out too long. It's ugly to look at whenever a robot isn't on screen (which tbf, might be because i'm watching the HD Remaster). And very few of the characters are all that compelling or distinct. You'd think with how slow the plot is that would allow Kira's gaggle of friends to show some personality but they're all very bland and feel pretty disposable.

Figured id talk about it in 5 episode chunks as opposed to trying to cover each episode individually, but im trying to sit down and have a proper rewatch of gundam seed. in part because of a rather dumb fanfic crossover idea i had, but now mostly just to see if my opinions gonna be different this time around.
looking at the original broadcast version and not the hd remaster, because i will not be party to that revisionism.
gundam seed episodes 1-5
honestly i dont feel like its as much of a crib off of 0079 as a lot of people tend to declare it as/remember it as. their are certainly very familiar broad strokes going on here, more so then other gundams, but not strictly to seeds detriment. yet anyways.
i think it helps that the way our two protagonists are introduced helps to highlight more of the differences of whats going on compared to the similarities. certainly they both profess non involvement as civilians dragged into the conflict against their will, but where as amuro was always emphasized to be a rather hotblooded kid with a lot of anger towards the war and the people he saw as responsible for perpetuating it [he bum rushes his way during the evacuation just to yell at his dad about the gundam], kiras initially presented to us as more of a total wimp at heart about the whole thing by comparison, dudly do right bumbling his way into dire consequences without much thought. most notably episode 5, an episode dedicated entirely to a fight with the zaft team and which he spends flailing about in fear and ends with him having a panic attack in his mobile suit.
which brings me to an interesting note and something im kinda sad that seed wont really follow up on from my recollection: the helipolis gangs professed pacifism is shaded on as stemming more from the fear of involvement and getting hurt then from a genuine belief of non violence. and i do feel fairly confident that atleast within the early stage of seed that is in part intentional, not just because of murrus little dig at the kids mind but also because of the early portrayal of kira himself on a character basis and how a lot of the early conflict on the character end revolves around the helipololis gangs increasingly threadbare excuses of neutrality as to why they wont act when the battle is already on their doorstep. [which well something 0079 did touch on to some degree definitely wasn't its focus on the tension of characters].
That all said, fuck me do mu and murru make terrible impressions in these early episodes. mu comes off as a bit of a manipulative dick pushing buttons to get people to do what he wants and to get a reaction on things he probably already knows. murru just kinda comes across as braindead sadly, making a lot of stupid decisions to facilitate action and story beats but never really getting confronted on it well being led around by the nose by mu and natarle on all of the actual planning and most of the operation command. shes just there to sit in the captains seat really [which could have just as easily been done by a plank of wood with boobs], well the one whos actually doing most of the work commanding is natarle. natarles even the one who gets to wear the cool command hat, as if to further discredit murru as anything but a seatwarmer.
of the first 5 episode 5 is funnily my actual favourite of the episodes overall. well not quite as bad of an opening chunk as i remember it overall, episodes 2 and 3 have weird pacing aspects to em that makes me feel would could have accomplished what the stories aiming to do here much better in a shorter time frame, and episode 4 just kinda serves to set up episode 5. well episode 5's mostly just action, its done the best at selling kira as a believable character. his pilotings not particularly elegant, hes doing the usual gundam early series mistake of wildly shooting, hes mostly just playing keep away emphasizing that well hes gotten in the robot hes still rather fearful about the whole thing. and theres some decent tension with mus sneak attack on raus ship and if mu will make it back in time to aid a floundering kira. and we start actually delving more into that whole friends on the opposite sides of a war thing between athrun and kira, which is more then the other episodes have really done with that plot point.
