So if you’ve been out of the loop, there have been rumblings in NASCAR about taking the Cup cars to the streets of a major city as far back as December of 2020. The rumblings had talks of Chicago being the lead off to this experiment.
I made a huge case for Denver to get a race in a blog I put together on May 8th, 2021. (Ugh. 2021. Get me away from that year.) If you missed that blog, I brought up the following.
1) Colorado’s love of sports
2) the star power of Colorado sports
3) Iconic sports venues, famous landmarks, and mountain backdrop
I did bring up some challenges that would come along with hosting a street race such as traffic, noise complaints, city could lose money, and the fact that Denver has the unique additional challenge of being 1 mile above sea level, making the thin air an extra challenge for the teams and drivers. But in that blog, I failed to point something out.
Street racing really isn’t the best style of racing in the world when it comes to the top levels of racing... IMSA and IndyCar being the outliers as they have cars that are built to race on the streets. IndyCar races on the streets, while not always a thrilling race, provides good entertainment to be had and are really fun in person. I would know, I went to the 2011 Baltimore Grand Prix.
NASCAR, on the other hand? We’re talking about a 1.5 ton stock car racing that is purpose built to be raced on tracks from the high banks of Daytona and Talladega to the tiny little short tracks of Bristol and Martinsville.
NASCAR road course racing isn’t exactly the best nor is it that entertaining to watch a vast majority of the time. Looking at Sonoma in particular.
Anyway, the rumblings have turned into a roar. It was confirmed yesterday that the NASCAR Cup Series will indeed be racing on the streets of Chicago.
Want me to be perfectly honest? I’m not thrilled. The more I think about it, the less enthusiastic I am.
We got that street course race, yes. But Chicago? Really? You could’ve put a street race anywhere in the US (cough, cough, Denver, cough cough), hell, gone north of the US border to Toronto, south to Mexico City, and yet, you chose Chicago? Why? So you can chase a market that doesn’t care for the product?
And that’s the only thing that has me not thrilled about it. The track itself, tested on iRacing, doesn’t inspire any confidence in this race being any good at all.
Credit to NASCAR.com for this track image, but I want you guys to look at it. There are 12 turns, and it looks like there will be absolutely no passing zones.
Topping all that off, Road America, a race track that had long been wanting a Cup Series race, finally got it in 2021 on a major weekend, got it back in 2022, and are now losing it to... this. An attempt to chase the casual fans. To chase a market that probably doesn’t, and probably will never, care for NASCAR or racing in general. Road America had over 100,000 people show up to their 2021 and 2022 events and this is how they get treated? You give them the shaft due to TV ratings not matching up to every other race? Seriously?
I can think of another track that should get the axe over Road America. Sure, the Road America race wasn’t all that great, but they made a case to keep their race date. And they lose it.
At least cut Road America for a track that isn’t going to make you all look like you’re chasing the casual fans who don’t give a rip and a market that doesn’t care
Starting the first GT World Challenge America race of 2022 from pole, defending champion K-PAX Racing delivered a masterful performance by their N°1 Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO to win at Sonoma Raceway CA.
He was better known later as the chief of Oldsmobile, but GM manager John Rock first made his real mark at GMC, where he landed in 1982 after stints with Buick and Holden. GMC has always sat in Chevrolet’s shadow and by 1986-87, Rock was pushing to differentiate GMC from its sibling. That didn’t quite happen, but before Rock was transferred to Olds for an emergency rescue of the Rocket brand in 1992, his time at GMC culminated in a pair of absurd, unforgettable performance trucks. They were the GMC Syclone pickup, based on the S-15/Sonoma, and the Typhoon SUV, based on the S-15 Jimmy. Humble beginnings, maybe, but real rocket ships at the time. Originally, what became the Syclone was just a concept, one of three builds GMC showed off in 1989 - the others being the Kalahari (telegraphing the forthcoming 4-door S-15 Jimmy) and the far-out mid-engine Centaur, kind of pickup crossed with a Toyota Previa. The Centaur never went anywhere and the Kalahari became the =4-door Jimmy, but the Syclone (spelled with an S because Ford still had the rights to “Cyclone”) was something niche that Rock wanted to build for real. The concept was powered by a Buick Turbo 3.8, but to build a production version GMC created a 280-hp version of the Chevy/GMC LB4 4.3L V6 with a Mitsubishi-sourced turbo and 14lbs of intercooled boost. It used the AWD hardware from the GMC Safari minivan to put power to all four wheels via a 4-speed auto box. Because the S-15 was cheap to produce and the run relatively limited, Rock’s team could dress it up and set it up the way they wanted - it was lowered, given a body kit and graphics similar to the concept version, and turned loose. With ¼-mile times in the low 14s and a 0-60 figure of 4.3 seconds, it was a very fast vehicle for the day, and for a GMC a completely unexpected factory hot rod capable of seeing off a Ferrari 348 in the stoplight grand prix. The tradeoff was that it lost much of the S-15’s functionality, with only a 500-lb. payload rating. Syclone buyers didn’t care. Rarity was baked in, as the run was always planned to be 3,000 trucks. In fact 2,998 Syclones were built over about 7 months before the project came to an end. https://www.instagram.com/p/CH-vzJPFgBa/?igshid=lkpk7zh3n9yt

6. Couteau de chef de 8 pouces
Couteau Shun Hikari Chef

Short Documentary Video Runtime: 10 min Color & B/W, Stereo In 1954, an artist named Rex May created an iconic street sign for the city of San Francisco. Half a century later, his signs started to disappear. What began as a short film about design took on a life of its own and ended up changing a little piece of history.
