ok so i know i wrote the other post about rewriting throné's story and i put a crossed paths between her and osvald in it but im gonna be real i literally wrote that in 5min and am no longer happy with it so heres a version of it that incorporates the cloudy mirror. if i was gonna do this i would also definitely have to rewrite tem/now partitio's crossed paths if i did this but thats another post
Throné and osvald come across a washed-up corpse on the shore of the brightlands clutching a strange locked box. Throné recovers the box but cant get the lock open, osvald finds it strangely familiar and they agree to work together on trying to find out what it contains. After scrutinizing some townspeople osvald discovers that a scholar recently disappeared who he identifies as an old friend of his who was obsessed with religious relics and remembers that the seal on it means it has something to do with vitalists, a religious sect who believe that vide and aelfric are actually twin gods and that the church of the sacred flame has tried to depose vide in whats essentially a biblical succession battle, but that the scholar would have been the only person who really had the resources or motivation to learn anything else and any information would be in their workshop in montwise. Throné says she honestly cannot tell if theyve gotten their hands on something very valuable or complete junk. Osvald says that’s most of what being a scholar is, and throné jokes that actually being a thief isn’t too different
they arrive in montwise and osvald finds the scholars hidden workshop has been ransacked. They deduce that this happened within a few hours and decide to try and find the culprit. Throné recognizes a blacksnake and is immediately like. Oh… This idiot. She reveals it’s scaracci, a blacksnake who is both lazy and incompetent but treasured by Mother for being so mindlessly loyal that he’ll do literally any job, although he might not… yknow… succeedat it. scaracci is pissed and reveals that he did successfully recover what mother asked him to steal even if he did kinda sorta mess up a little on the job in new delsta, osvald mugs him and recovers the key to the box, which turns out to contain a strange, cloudy mirror. Throné wonders why the hell a blacksnake was tasked with retrieving this and assassinating a weird religious scholar, leading osvald to ask if the blacksnakes have any religious investments she knows of. Throné says that Mothers orphanage is actually officially associated with the Sacred Flame and staffed by nuns(one assumes they’re Just registered as an orphanage and the “running a school for your indentured thief-child-gang” is unofficial), but thieves generally only worship the one god. Osvald is like hmm. You know, my scholar associate was always very interested by aeber, especially the theory that he was originally the god of kindness who was demoted for insisting on sympathizing with and helping criminals condemned by the church. Throné is like ah, like you and i. osvald pauses and then is like…. Yes. Like you and i.
Alternatively if you want to have her already have realized the blacksnakes are connected to vide since it could be completed after her chapter 5, you could have her say that and simply speculate about how the blacksnakes meant to use the mirror, I just think it’s lame to have throné be connected to a completely different god than her patron and not do Anything with that, so he at least gets a mention and also this allows that thing where osvald and throné are both criminals against their will to also be at least said once
how they meant to use the mirror is that ori hired them. Her investigations led her to figuring out that the mirror can be used to change flames of vide to flames of aelfric and vice versa so she wanted it out of the picture completely lest some travelers hypothetically use it to undo a century’s worth of work in about an hour. Hypothetically.
She found this out from harvey which preserves their working relationship and allows the structure of the leadup to their torch to be mostly the same.

not a whole lot of observations before I go and fight the final boss (who I think I'm gonna curbstomp anyhow despite not fighting the superboss first and not having yet used any nuts, I guess lv 70 which is my default "this seems like a nice level to be at for endgame stuff" is high enough to kill minor bosses w/out them ever getting a chance to attack once), but I did notice a few things while playing though the final chapter stuff since I decided to actually walk around instead of fast-travelling like I did my first run...
you know that kinda creepy girl who stands outside of the inn in Crackridge at night who, if spoken to, runs off in the direction of the Fellsun Ruins? Yeah, so turns out she is not there during the final chapter sequence at all. I'm gonna head back to Crackridge after kicking Vide's ass just to see if she returns or not.
checked a few of the towns and it seems most of the NPCs don't really...seem to notice the unnaturally long night going on. I mean sure you get some updated dialogue after relighting the Flamechurch Flame from the NPCs, but generally? no unique dialogue. which I mean, it would have been a developmental nightmare to have unique dialogue for every NPC during this sequence, but it's still hmm
ALSO I finally figured out (I think) why Castti is the only traveler to be directly attacked by Vide and nearly overtaken (her and Ochette's crossed paths ch2), and that's because she was the only one of the main characters to have read the Book of Night (when she met Claude with Trousseau when they were in Lostseed). It occurred to me while I was reading Tanzy's journal and Tanzy wrote that she had read the book, and I had gone down the TV Tropes rabbit hole on Octo2 a few nights ago and the people writing those pages seem to think that what caused Tanzy's death was similar to what Castti experienced in the second crossed paths, and so now I'm wondering if the Book of Night has anything to do with Vide being able to shadow-eat people. Like, Hikari's the only other traveler to battle with the shadow, but it's very much something inside him and according to what's been said about the bloodline of Ku, the shadow wouldn't have killed him had it overtaken him, it would have just used him as a puppet. So yeah, maybe there's something here...or maybe I'm overthinking it.
I absolutely annihilated the Grotesque Monster and Arcanette battles both in three turns, neither got a chance to attack, Temenos dealt 86k+ damage in one. This is why I think I'm gonna waltz through the Vide fight again, esp. since I know the battle gimmicks and am preparing accordingly
I have this theory brewing that D'arqest may have been stopped by eight travelers during his time, based on some things said by the Moonshade Order major villains (Arcanette mostly), and bc I took a good look at the "beginning of Ku" mural again and counted eight red squares gathered around the image of the Flame, and what Hikari said about the first ruler of Ku, and the implied history of the Lumina clan having once fought against the darkness, and a few other details I'm not recalling at the moment, but it would be very hmm-worthy if it pans out for anything. CotC lore implies Beowulf had probably seven other companions and traveled across Orsterra, so it would be an interesting recurring Octopath Theme if it pans out in any way.
everything about Ori in this part of the game still gets me like, even knowing what was gonna happen, I was still like, "holy shit." Love Ori, but damn girl.
actually despite there being very little writing overall for the final chapter sequence, I just really love this part of the game. Like it's not even that I think it's well-written or challenging in an interesting way or anything, I just love the vibes a lot I guess. Absolutely haunting story segment for me.

update on my goddamn i want that fucking game saga
first, like. in case it's not clear why I am Unfuckinghinged about this game: I first got Star Ocean The Second Story at an antique store in Missouri. it was just in a fuckign display case for 15 bucks and had the Prima Strategy Guide with it, but the spine had broken so someone had holepunched the entire guide and put it on binder rings?
and that's the first time i got it, took it home, and dumped a truly batshit number of hours into it
then YEARS AND YEARS later, I got it on the PSP for the five minutes I had a PSP
now, there is one of those Octopath Traveler-style remakes with the 2.5D style and it has a demo and i played the demo and Desire Consumed My Heart
as someone who almost exclusively plays games years and years after their release, i very rarely want A New Game. but this is the one.
so i fucking found a coupon code to at least get 12 dollars off of full price and i fucking bought it and i shouldn't have but i can't remember the last time i wanted a game this much
anyway FINE SQUEENIX, YOU CAN HAVE MY MONEY.
jfc i think it was still fucking SQUARESOFT when I first got this game
i wish i still had that Prima guide with the binder rings.

hii id love to know more abt ur octopath ocs .. would they be like the 8 cast members of a third game ? what do u think their beginning chapters would be like? (@dmclr)
hi clara!!! yess i would love to talk about them 👀
so yeah they would be like a new full cast of a third game. not in the same continents as the last two games either. i actually made a map of what the continent would look like!
Tumblr media
i wanna try and update it at some point
and i don’t really have a whole lot in regards to chapters but i have their main story arcs down.
Tumblr media
orietta is my merchant. she’s kinda like a robin-hood-type con artist, where she only targets rich people in order to give back to the poor.
Tumblr media
camil is my scholar. she’s also my octopath 2 oc but i use her here too. she’s fresh out of university but she got afflicted by a curse that will kill her in exactly one year. obviously she’s trying to find a way to break it.
Tumblr media
tybalt is my apothecary. he’s also my octopath 1 oc but i use him here too. he’s a former knight in training but abandoned that to become an apothecary and adventurer.
Tumblr media
oliver is my dancer. he’s more of an actor and singer tbh but whatever it counts. he used to be part of a thespian group but he decided to go solo in order to build up his confidence.
Tumblr media
penelope is my warrior. she’s part of a secretive elven race of people who got pushed up to the north by the humans. she’s trying to act as an ambassador of the elves to foster peace among the people.
Tumblr media
andreas is my hunter. he’s part of a group of nomads who follow a wind spirit. that spirit went missing one day, and he’s trying to find it. he also has a dog named glen :)
Tumblr media
twyla is my cleric. she’s on a mission to clear the name of her best friend who’s been accused of being a heretic. this has also caused her to struggle with her faith.
Tumblr media
and hawkin is my thief. he’s the heir to the casimir crime family, and has been tasked with stealing a mysterious artifact from an unknown ruin. and if he doesn’t his dad’s gonna kill him. so that’s cool.

I think I've found a pretty good rhythm for postgame support/bond grinding in Engage. Sharing here because I like talking through my 100% processes.
Step 1: Pick a battle. Order of priority goes Training (only available at Firene, Brodia, and Solm castles) -> Gold Corrupted -> Silver Corrupted -> regular skirmish, although typically I'll only ever do the first two before the selection changes. Training battles give bonus EXP and money at the end making them generally more profitable than either Gold or Silver Corrupted battles.
Step 2: Fight the battle. On Normal at least you can eventually auto-battle most turns and have everyone survive, once your units start approaching and hitting their caps (note: I got the growth and EXP-boosting DLC skills on all of my units during the main story to speed this up). Emblems should be shuffled around often to maximize bond growth.
Step 3: Grab bond fragments from battlefield and possibly other items before returning to the Somniel.
Step 4: View available bond and support conversations, do all three of the support-increasing activities added in the most recent update, share a meal for more support points, and spend your money appropriately. After maxing out donations and buying a second seal for everyone so they could keep leveling (and doing so routinely when they hit max level again without capping their stats), money should go toward buying everything in the boutique, forging, and finally buying cheap stuff from the armory and item shop to get all the related achievements.
Step 5: Feed and pet Sommie for easy bond fragments. If it's afternoon, go fishing (see next step); if not, go to sleep to get a wake-up scene and do so until it's afternoon.
Step 6: Go fishing. Ensure that Bisot Tuna is the bonus fish, which can be done by viewing bonus fish at other times of day repeatedly until the afternoon bonus changes to Bisot. By casting immediately after beginning the minigame, I find that I mostly pull up Bisot Tuna (1000 fragments with the bonus) and Enchan Tuna (1000 fragments) most often with the lower-value fish appearing 2-4 times per visit to the Somniel. You can just let these break free and not lose a chance to fish, but Sommie's affection will decrease if you keep doing this which can be a problem for hauling in the very difficult Enchan Tuna.
Step 7: If you haven't gone to sleep yet, do so to get a wake-up scene. Go to the arena. You can save scum the standard bouts to quickly build supports, although this is very tedious. Now that the update added faster support building activities, I just do these with Alear since they have the most supports to get anyway. Emblem bouts should be done routinely to build bond supports. By fishing as described above, I find I average about 8-10,000 bond fragments with each round of this process, which is ample to slowly work through the ridiculous amount of bond conversations. Once all bond conversations are finished, fragments would then be spent on obtaining bond rings. Gacha mechanics...yay.
Repeat from Step 1 until all supports, bond conversations, bond rings, and achievements are obtained...which won't be possible until Wave 4 of the DLC has released.
Note that this is all quite repetitive, somehow even more so than when I was doing 100% in Three Houses and replaying the game over two dozen times. At least it all goes pretty quickly once you get the process down.
...I'm still very much looking forward to Octopath Traveler 2 just to have something different to play, though.

unstoppable force (my want to do saga things again) meets immovable object (everything related to ea and just ts4 as a game)
i think i’ll wait for the new ep to drop and for the modding scene to stabilize itself before i install ts4 and see how it plays out from there. i’ve been having a load of fun lately with ts2, octopath traveler (haven’t got the 2nd yet and won’t until next month, but i really want to fuck around with the demo before then). i’ve also been playing overland on the switch and want to get into outward bc it seems like the sort of gaming experience i will enjoy.
i think this weekend i will redo my morrowind mods. i haven’t played much since last year tamriel rebuilt got updated, and i was experiencing issues with different mods conflicting, so i might just switch to bcom since it either comes with patches for other mods or is just built with compatibility in mind.
but i do miss my perfect sim challenge as much as i feel conflicted at time with the posting of it as a story. i’ve started migrating saga things to a notion template and i miss it terribly

FFXVI
I just finished playing FFXVI. I've kept a twitter thread on non spoiler thoughts here but this post is strictly on SPOILERS so be warned!!
vvvv Read more for my thoughts on FF16 vvvvv
First thing I want to state is that I played this with Japanese voices! I plan on watching lets plays of it which usually have it in English. I will do an update or a separate post once I've seen a full playthrough just to compare.
Combat I never played DMC5 so I don't know how that plays. I've played this without any of the accessibility accessories since I wanted to have a challenge. Its definitely not as hard or frustrating as Dark Souls. Even after playing probably 60+ hours I still find the dodge timing hard. Fighting giant beasts was the most frustrating. It was hard for me to get hits in. The gameplay does remind me alot of ff14 since there's your combos and cooldowns so I often spam buttons. Commanding Torgal does remind me of Nier Automata with commanding the pod but I didn't use Torgal as much as I probably should. It was hard to pick which eikon skills to keep. I mostly kept the high attack ones to spam when staggered. I really like the Bahamut laser beam since it does huge damage. I really like the look of Odin's but it was hard to use.
The Eikon fights were mostly cinematic which is fine. The arenas were quite busy and even busier with the spell effects lol Its very Kaiju battle or even Attack on Titan like. I didn't ever die during them. But as regular Clive I did die a handful of times and luckily the game is nice enough to have checkpoints and give you full inventory of potions. I died more times in Hunts than msq boss fights. I played Octopath 2 a couple months ago which is a turn based game. There's a secret boss that took me over an hour to fight it so I appreciate that FF16 doesn't make me do that, but it is also much easier in comparison. I did find the final boss fights underwhelming, but it does have some annoying af moves that I have no idea how to avoid getting hit by. The fight with Titan is my favorite just for the song and how neat it all was!
STORY Its was quite a ride, but it hasn't moved me as much as FF14 did. The sidequests got me more than the msq. Mostly since they're chains and you spend a lot more time with these characters than the enemy dominants themselves. I like the sidequests ladies more than Jill. I wish they didn't have her get captured multiple times lol I thought she was going to die to give Clive her Shiva powers but seems like you can just give it to him. Jill is an ok character. I wish they did a bit more with her but she ended up having to stay behind. There was a scene or two where she watches instead of helping that bothered me more than it should lol
Having Clive take up Cid's name surprised me. And to have some of the folks in the hideaway call him that too took me a bit to get use to. I did not expect Cid to die so soon or at all. And to have the hideaway destroyed gave me FF14 waking sands vibes.
Dion being gay and having a kissing scene surprised me and wish they do this in FF14! I'm glad they did an obvious gay couple with no stereotyping in a mainline FF game. I did not expect him to last as long as he did since the others died so quick. Quite a tragic character too. I was hoping he'd make it.
I love uncle Byron! What a great character and unexpected comedy relief lol I loved him almost immediately and also feared for his life. So I was very relived that not a single hair in his body was harmed in this game!
I'm glad Joshua is alive! I had a feeling since he seemed too important to just be a memory. Though I don't understand who the hooded figure is in the flashback that Clive saw. Also don't understand why he avoided Clive till the fight with Bahamut. Idk what he sounds like in eng yet but his jp voice is really nice. I was worried he was going to die again and it did upset me when it did happen. For Clive to have all his memories of him flash before his eyes was emotional. And for him to get resurrected and write a book called Final Fantasy in the post credits pleased me.
They did the Sephiroth route with the main antagonist, Ultima. Where they appear throughout the story to mess with you. I thought there might be a surprise never-heard-of last boss but no its all Ultima. I didn't find them to be the most interesting villain since its another alien god being. I did like the argument at the end that they're just the same as human.
Clive is a good boy! Judging by the subtitles eng Clive seems to have a different vibe than jp Clive. Jp Clive's voice has that smooth, kind, and strong quality. He's very much like a wol who chooses the good guy choice. I didn't expect him to die. To have the red star fade and Torgal crying does seem to confirm that he's gone. Definitely not the happiest ending. Idk if the Blight is still a problem lol
With the logo having both Phoenix and Ifrit the story is definitely about the brothers. It seems to come full circle with the beginning having them fight each other and in the end they're one. Joshua dies in the beginning, Clive dies at the end. Makes me wish there were more brotherly moments between them than the sidequest.
Overall I enjoyed FF16! I don't think I'd rate it higher than FF14 or FF7 but its definitely an improvement from FF15. While FF15 did make me cry a lot more than FF16 did, the eye candy that is Clive is really what sells the game to me lol
There was no Cactuar or tonberries! :(
Also the vibrations on the PS5 is rather neat. I've kept it on just because I've heard people say how good it is. The vibrations are happening most of the time in cutscenes but sometimes I don't notice it at all. Its not at all like previous controllers where it rumbles and be annoying. I usually turn it off but I think I wont do that for the PS5 controller.

Currently Playing Octopath Traveler - Update 1.0
November 19, 2022
Tumblr media
I started Octopath Traveler today on PC/Steam. It has really cute and beautiful art design - it's definitely a unique combo!
I went ahead and chose Ophilia as my first character. I liked her design and her story seemed the most interesting to me right off the bat.
Tumblr media
I met her sister and adopted father, as well as the townspeople. I also got into 2 fights already. I think the battle system will be fun once I get the hang of it. Ophilia is not much of a heavy hitter, but she is able to have NPCs "tag along" and help in battle, so that's nice!
Here are her beginning stats:
Tumblr media
One thing I noticed right away about Ophilia and Liliana's story is that Liliana is reminiscent of Yuna from FFX, with Braska being O and L's father, the archbishop Josef.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I like what I've seen so far, and I've only played for around 45 minutes! Can't wait to see how this story unfolds, and the fact it looks like I can play the game from 8 perspectives is very exciting!

This is how you do a pinned post right?
Hiya! I'm Marisa, but you can call me Mari. I've been lurking about for a while now, and I figure it's time I changed that!
Literally everything is below the cut, on account of there being so much text.
My Tags
Whoops, I left this empty on purpose! I’ll add tags here as they become necessary, so check back every once in a while.
What I do (and want to do)
Worldbuilding (Been doing it in some form in my spare time for as long as I can remember. No idea how good any of it is, but I’ll occasionally post about it nonetheless - I love talking about the stuff I make.)
Pixel art (I've lost track of how long I've been doing it for, but nevertheless I'd like to think I'm at least decent at it.)
Game Development (I have too many ideas and must make them. With Godot, of course.)
Make music (Of the chiptune variety specifically. I got famistudio a while ago and I have no clue what I’m doing. I’ll figure something out though.)
Stuff I Like (in no particular order)
Splatoon Franchise (I'm a series vet, played since the first game's testfire!)
Celeste (One of, if not the best example(s) of video games as an art form. I can and will die on this hill.)
Terraria and Minecraft (I'm a sucker for sandboxes where you can build shit. Granted, I'm mediocre at actually doing so, but what can I say.)
Mindustry (The best game you can play on a phone. And it's on steam + itch. And it has official mod support on all platforms. And it's still receiving content updates. And- Dies)
Ultrakill (Sensory overload: the shooter, but it’s fun so I don’t care.)
Octopath Traveler 2 (I'm Very Normal about Castti. I'm totally not obsessed with her what could you possibly be talking about.)
No Man’s Sky
Noita
Slime Rancher
Cult of the Lamb
Electronic and Chiptune music (I fucking love this stuff and I cannot explain why for the life of me.)
Where to find me (and not find me)
You can find me on cohost (where I post my art) and youtube (where I rarely post video devlogs and whatever else comes to mind). Relevantly, you will not find me on tiktok or instagram - I choose not to use either of these platforms for a variety of reasons, and I will not expound upon them.
Boundaries
This list is not a DNI. It describes how I will act or respond regarding certain situations or kinds of people, because that’s how boundaries actually work. Also note that this list is here for transparencies sake and is non-exhaustive. I can and will make liberal use of the block button for reasons not listed.
I block TERFs, radfems, and bigots of any other variety on sight. This is your first and only warning.
Additionally, fuck JK Rowling. If you interact with her works, you’ll get blocked.
While we’re on the subject, don’t refer to me with traditionally masculine terms (dude, bro, and the like) or he/him pronouns - I don’t care what your reasoning is. If you do it once unintentionally as a force of habit I won’t be particularly aggravated, but repeat occurrences will result in a block.
I don't mess with gacha games (or any others that are microtransaction-heavy for that matter) as I believe them to be predatory and unethical. If you recommend that I (or anyone else) play any on my posts, you get blocked.
I'm here to have a nice fun time, NOT to have arguments with randos. Try and pick a fight with me, and you’ll get blocked. Quote: "I am not interested in discourse. I am right."
If I didn't put something here and/or you want clarification about something, I encourage you to ask, but I request that you respect my decision to not disclose information about myself. To state this more clearly: Do not pressure me to post (or otherwise make public) information about myself. If you do, I WILL block you. Who I am offline is none of your business, end of story.
Don’t ask me for donations or to boost a donation post. I understand that finances are tough for a lot of you, but I don’t have the money to spare, nor is this the correct blog to be asking for this kind of assistance from. I will block you if this occurs repeatedly.
Last, but certainly not least: If your blog is untitled and/or lacks a profile picture, I will block you if you follow me. You look like a bot in that instance. I shouldn’t have to explain this.
That just about covers everything! I hope you find my little corner on this hellsite at least somewhat enjoyable to pass through. May good fortune find y'all!

Replaying Brilliant Diamond so here's the issues I've found so far
-ILCA. Just ILCA. please gamefreak give us an octopath traveler style gen 5 remake
-The Chibis ruin anything vaguely serious. This coulda been our chance to see a more animated Cyrus
-Cyrus Isn't a thing that's there throughout the story as much...
-...Because they're "Diamond and Pearl remakes and not Platinum remakes" (ignoring that FRLG didn't have a notable third version to remake, the others were based off of CRYSTAL AND EMERALD respectively, with some changes made (some better than others (HEY GUYS LETS MAKE THE BATTLE FRONTIER A TINY MODEL AND THEN COPYPASTE THE X AND Y BATTLE MAISON)))
-IF THEY'RE DIAMOND AND PEARL REMAKES WHERE'S THE FUCKING GAME CORNER? WHERE'S THE EXPLOSION TM?
-the cart has no postgame or updated soundtrack. also the soundtrack it does use isn't the actual DS soundtrack. this is most likely to pay for cheaper, lower storage cartridges.
-the pokemon in the grand underground is a swell addition. the removal of secret bases is downright heartbreaking
-if we WERE going to use chibis then why not the gen 6 style chibis that were used in the last remake set, which mind you were based on the third version, and included extra content not in the original games and all came on the fucking cartridge and won't be locked out the moment the switch online goes off like the last generation's has.
C'mon, after HGSS and ORAS, and even FRLG, which added a whole huge area to explore, I was excited to revisit sinnoh with all the new fixins and this is what we got?
-no way to skip the tutorials
-2 fire type lines in the main story and one of them is a starter. if you didn't pick the monkey, you got ponyta or nothing.
-why did they make the elite four and champion that big of a leap from the rest of the game in terms of difficulty?
-Every gym is the DP and not the platinum version. This means that Gardenia, Maylene and Fantina's gyms suck again, and combined with the ability to use the ability to walk in every direction to cheese Candice's gym puzzle, this is a real Misogyny Win
-If you don't fail mathematics on purpose, you cannot see a single drifloon until friday in real time.
-Gym order is back to the DP versions, so fantina is now gym 5 again.
-pokemon walk with you, but they have collisions.
-gym leader and E4 teams are back to their DP pokemon so volkner has an octillery and flint is a lying bastard who calls himself a fire type specialist. oh, and they still have evayshun moves on the fucking sets. might as well have given all their pokemon moody while we're at it

Time to update the Octopath 2:
youtube
We're back to the crossed paths, and Throne and Temenos have a lead on a hidden treasure inside Flamesgrace's cathedral.
youtube
And back to the main stories, Agnea traveles to New Delsta to try to make her star ascend, but there's already a star in town.
youtube
At least she got a ticket to see the show, but it seems that poorer folk are being priced out of the theater.  What can we do about this?
youtube
It turns out we can help out the competition directly, that's what.
youtube
To no one's surprise, it seems La'Mani doesn't take kindly to people that give the poor folk entertainment and hope.  Time for an attitude adjustment.

Ophilia, The Cleric: Chapter 2
WARNING! Spoilers ahead for Chapter 2 of Ophilia’s story in Octopath Traveler!
...Man, it has been a while. Sorry for the wait! If anyone’s still interested, I’ll make sure to update this series a lot more regularly!
I’m determined to finish this game this year!  (۶•̀ᴗ•́)۶ So let’s get going!
Alright!
The second chapter reviews begin...NOW!
Starting with...Ophilia!
...
...Okay, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it: This chapter was semi-filler. Only semi because the plot did progress to lead into the next point, but besides the Kindling nothing really happened (in a main plot sense).
The Kindling really was cool to watch, though. The burst of fire was really pretty.
The story was solid, but it didn’t really tell us anything about Ophilia or have her work in an unfamiliar situation. We already know that she likes to help people and that she cares about her family; all this chapter did was reinforce that. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it really doesn’t add much.
Another thing: Just because someone bumps into you, it does not mean it’s their fault if you lose something. It is the result of an accident. Just saying.
The lesson about grieving was good though: It’s okay to be sad, but don’t forget you still have people who care about you. At some point, you have to acknowledge you still have people you love and love you back. That gets neglected to be mentioned sometimes.
Probably need more than a week, though. Also, Derryl’s a kid: kids do mean things. I do appreciate Ophilia’s way of handling things: Calm but firm and making sure they know all the sides to a situation.
Also, Nate’s a little brat. Just saying.
And if the forest is so dangerous, WHY DIDN’T ANYONE PUT UP A FENCE?! Does anyone actually go in there?! No one tried to stop Emil when he was clearly running through a populated town?! What’s up with this city?!
I wonder what happened to that dog...
Not much to say about Hróðvitnir. Literally just there to be a boss. Again, semi-filler chapter. Which really stinks because they have a really cool design, in a muscular-wolf kind of way. Maybe a beast from the legends of the Flame? Guardian of the woods whose land was stolen by the church, maybe giving Ophilia a conflict? There was potential, and all we got was a hungry wolf.
At least we found the brooch. And the apology was nice, Ophilia’s right: No one can hurt you like a friend.
Technically I saved your life Emil, Hróðvitnir was probably just about to eat you both, but okay...
Aww, the Flame reflects Ophilia’s heart! That’s a cute detail.
Simple story, unnecessary but satisfactory.
But oh boy...We got Travel Banter! I have been looking forward to this for SO LONG!
I adore party interactions, especially in RPGs. It’s a great way to flesh out the characters and help show what it’s like for the team when they’re on the road when we can’t see them. Especially in older games like Octopath is based on, party interactions were usually reserved for recruitment and plot progression. Understandable for the time, but I appreciate the development team allowing us to see how the party reacts to events as a whole instead of just the main character. My only wish is that they had full voice acting.
I’m gonna talk about how I feel about each one!
Cyrus: This one was just adorable. Cyrus was so excited and Ophilia actually had someone to talk to that knows why she’s traveling! And she wants him to see the rest, aw! Just sweet.
Alfyn: Poor guy. I can’t blame him, she’s such a cutie (Don’t think she’ll notice, though, seems to be a problem with this team). Nice to see her interested in his job, apothecarys are cool! I like learning about his process.
Primrose: Aww, we got to see Prim’s soft side. I like seeing that even if she’s a vengeance-obsessed femme fatale, she can still be genuinely friendly and supportive. And Phili, you’re not exactly one to talk about outfit practicality: you went sleeveless in the snow and you’re trekking through forests in white, girl.
Tressa: I can’t wait to see Tressa become a parent. Sorry Ophilia, sometimes you gotta be tough and maybe negotiate.
H’aanit: Not much to say, just dog stuff. And forest stuff. Eh. Knowledge?
Therion: If you don’t want to talk about it, WHY’D YOU BRING IT UP?! SHARE YOUR BACKSTORY! Props for being real, though, other people have it hard too.
Olberic: Team Dad! He’s so proud of his little guy. Ophilia agrees with me!
Saintsbridge gives a sleepy atmosphere. Not a bad thing, it’s a calm place, I just assumed a religious town would be more uptight and reserved. The church is lovely but not overwhelming, plaza’s cute, even the division between the upper and lower isn’t that big. The lighting is reminiscent of an early morning glow, and the running stream is gentle and soothing, complimenting the woodsy surroundings. Perfect place to take a nap or buy a treat from the bakery and watch the water...
So of course the dungeon is a horrifying dark forest of doom. ...Now I want black forest gâteau.
Murkwood’s a pretty standard evil forest: Dark, only candlelight, foggy; you get the picture. Not saying it looks bad, pretty much all the backgrounds in this game would make an amazing gallery show; just pretty stereotypical.
But there is one thing I can say.
WE FINALLY GOT A BREAK FROM SUMMON BOSSES!
I was getting, SO TIRED of those.
Honestly I was so happy I didn’t even pay that much attention to the actual fight. Okay, I’m not even gonna try to do fight commentary anymore, I’m not good with mechanics; just gonna stick with reviewing the story, setting and characters.
Now to Goldshore!
...Wait, Goldshore...Is the next chapter a beach episode?!
NO MORE SEMI-FILLER!

Obvious update: Pokémon Black has begun! Hooray! Can't wait to see what happens going forward!
Not-so-obvious update: I've decided to basically keep the Spleen story mode to myself. I already got pretty far in it and I just think it'd be better for me to just experience it on my own. Plus, I couldn't really find much to say about it. But, since Splatoon 3 is a bigger game than just the story mode, I will still occasionally make posts about it in general, like for stuff like Splatfests!
I think doing this for other games might be the best way of posting about them. Stuff like Octopath Traveler or Sonic Forces and stuff like that where the story is either too complex and convoluted or where I couldn't give two shits about the story, respectively. I guess some games just aren't super fit for riffing on for a long time.
