Everything hurts.

It’s searing pain pixelating across your fragile flesh, burning to the touch, and it’s making you angry and it hurts and there’s

silence.

Everything stops cold as one of the attackers - some jackass in a mask - slashes at your right arm, the one you’ve technically had replaced twice now. The moment freezes in time, all the pain, all that suffering and anger and hurt as wings cut into warp

and stick there

and struggle to get out.

More and more eyes open up along the arm, bright yellow and glaring at the masked vampire as thin tendrils of a deep, pitch-purple start to snake up her wing. Your right arm burns, now, too, but not with corruption. This is freezing, a bitter cold that’s numbing you to any other pain, and in the silence there’s music.

It doesn’t sound like much of anything at first. Like whispers in the wind, like something very faint that you can just barely hear, but it’s there.

And there’s a silhouette at the fuzzy corners of your vision, and you see

her

a figure draped in black and purple, yellow eyes glinting everywhere but from her face, dark and matted hair over her eyes, face blank and mouth unmoving as she sings herself a crown of six-petaled flowers.

Your sister is here.

Her expression doesn’t change, but you can feel worry and a deep anger, like something stirring miles and miles below the ocean, some forgotten godling uncoiling and unfurling itself into the universe, into the world. She opens her mouth.

It’s a sing-song monotone, like it’s always been, when you first met, when you last spoke, but now it’s cut with so much more anger; those six-petaled flowers bloom up your arm, over every surface you’ve brushed past,

and they open each petal to reveal eyes

and each eye glares angrily, baleful and golden,

and each eye shuts,

opening back up to release dark fog,

and there’s fog everywhere, weighing on your lungs like a heavy press, the air suddenly so thick it’s like you could be swimming through the humidity

you’re out of your head

of your heart

of your mind

“and you can run, but you can’t hide.”
