Go-Kart Mozart - When You're Depressed (2018)
Go-Kart Mozart, now Mozart Estate, are the brainchild of Lawrence (Felt, Denim).  Here’s a cheerful pop song about depression! A theme song for Tumblr users, maybe.
You really can't imagine why You used to care, you used to try

Text
“Three decades ago, Lawrence (just Lawrence, no surname) was midway through a carefully measured plan for his band, Felt: release 10 albums and 10 singles in 10 years. That part was a success, generating a unique blend of glowing guitars and shimmering textures that sit somewhere between Television and the Cocteau Twins.
But Felt’s final release and farewell tour fizzled out with little fanfare, allowing the band to dissolve into the ether of cult status. That was also part of the plan, Lawrence claims. It’s just that there should’ve been a bit more glory along the way.
“I wanted Felt to be the best-ever underground band in England,” says the 56-year-old, a hint of his West Midlands accent still creeping through. “A band that would break into the charts as well as be countercultural.”
Lawrence is one of the last true enigmas left in the industry. His relationship to music, and his reason for getting into it, is not like most people’s. “Being in a band is not a pastime you could call fun,” he says dryly.
“I didn’t join a band to have fun; I don’t want to have fun. Fun doesn’t exist in my life. I didn’t want to have a laugh on the road and pick up girls – that was completely outside of our remit.”
Instead Felt was constructed to be pristine and professional. “Being happy with music that sounded like a demo?” he says, referring to the scrappy sound of mid-80s indie pop. “That was the opposite of what I wanted. I despised that whole aspect of making music.”
(…)
For Lawrence is, he believes, a pop star. With no computer, smartphone or online presence, he does lead the life of a reclusive genius – just minus the fame. “To me, a pop star is someone you never really know,” he says, touching his lips with the grey flannel. “You think you know, but you don’t.”
That said, Lawrence is open about his shortcomings. He rarely sleeps, instead staying up late watching TV and smoking cigarettes out on his balcony, where he comes up with his best ideas. Now that Felt’s first five albums are being reissued on Cherry Red, he can admit that there are a handful of mistakes he agonises over, and that a sense of preciousness hindered the band.
“I couldn’t loosen up. The perfect word to describe Felt to me was ‘uptight’. You had to have a certain plectrum to play in the band, that’s how detailed it was. Things like that prevent you from obtaining any big goal you may have because you’re always questioning everything. We were heading for a brick wall right from day one… But I knew the end of Felt was just the beginning. Sometimes to build a myth, you have to disappear.”
(…)
After Felt, Lawrence moved on to a more pop-focused band called Denim, putting out three albums on three different labels (Charlie Brooker recently picked one for his Desert Island Discs). And with an appearance on Jools Holland as well as a stadium tour supporting Pulp, the big time finally beckoned.
“With the third record [Denim Take Over] I achieved a life goal, which was to be on [the label] EMI,” he says. “I wrote ‘Summer Smash’ and they said, ‘That’s going to be a hit, we’ll sign you.’” The song was named ‘single of the week’ on Radio 1 and was due for release on 8 September 1997 – just nine days after Princess Diana died in a car crash. The label swiftly deemed the title insensitive, scrapping its release. The CDs were melted, the project abandoned and Denim were dropped.
“My whole life collapsed because of Princess Diana dying,” he says. “It affected the rest of my life in such a massive way – it’s crazy… I had some kind of breakdown. I just fell through a hole and only crawled out of it years later.”
The period that followed saw Lawrence grapple with drug addiction – something he doesn’t wish to discuss – and he eventually became homeless. Songs and lyrics still sprang up, but his workrate suffered and the opportunities disappeared. Then filmmaker Paul Kelly offered a lifeline by proposing a documentary about Lawrence (2011’s Lawrence of Belgravia).
(…)
The documentary focused on a new phase of Lawrence’s career, going by the moniker Go-Kart Mozart. New album Mozart’s Mini Mart reflects a less difficult but still frugal time in his life. He’s gone from paying someone £50 a week just to roll his joints, to utilising bargain stores. “I never even knew what Poundland was,” he says softly. Making the album required calling in favours to record for free, in stages, over several years.
(…)
“It’s not a safe environment at all and I love that; that’s why I’m in it. When you write a song, it’s like you’ve written a lottery ticket. You don’t know when it’s going to hit the jackpot. It’s really hardcore and if you don’t deliver, they terminate your contract. It’s so cool – so horrible and heartless – but I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Yet despite that enthusiasm, Lawrence doesn’t feel part of the musical landscape – at least not by the standards he’s set for himself. “I feel like I’m still on the outside of the industry, waiting to be let in,” he says. “I’m still knocking on the window saying, ‘Let me in, let me in’ and they’re saying, ‘Not quite yet. Soon, maybe…’””
Tumblr media
“Nick Gilbert, who was the bass player, he left Felt in the middle of recording the first album in Leamington Spa. He rang me up a couple of days later and he went, “I’m leaving. Look, Lawrence, this is really ruining our friendship, me being in the band with you, and I don’t want to spoil it. So I’m gonna leave.”
And I thought, “So what if it’s gonna spoil or friendship? So what? We’re gonna be in a band, we’re gonna be famous, we’re gonna be millionaires, we’re gonna be pop stars. Who cares if it ruins our friendship?”
He was talking on a very, very deep level which at that point, I couldn’t understand the logic in that at all.”
Because your friendship with him was not that important to you?
“Not as important as being famous and rich, no.”
And now?
“Um… Now I’d still forego a friendship for the band, absolutely. I mean, my friend is the band. You know? My friend is that nebulous thing called “the band”. Called “the group”. That’s who I’m married to. Any friendship can go by the wayside. Um, and he was the only best friend I’ve ever had in my life so it was quite a big deal.”
“So to say that Lawrence of Belgravia perfectly captures the enigma that is Lawrence is to pay tribute to Paul Kelly, who in his first full-length feature has made one of the great rock documentaries. It concentrates on the eight years since the last Go-Kart Mozart album; the non-more ironically titled Tearing Up the Album Chart. Kelly had initially imagined the film would take a year to make but this was to reckon without his subject matter going missing for months at a time, living in constant fear of eviction (at the beginning of the film Lawrence actually is evicted) and there being zero financial backing for a third Go-Kart Mozart album.
Lawrence’s mental health problems and heroin addiction are only ever alluded to in a collage about halfway through the film but there can be little doubt of the toll they have exerted both upon the man and his creativity; this is someone, after all, who released ten albums and ten singles in ten years with Felt. The Lawrence of those years always cut a deeply stylish figure, excelling in perfect, art rock haircuts. By contrast, the Lawrence we meet in this film appears ashen and drawn, his long, greasy hair topped off by an equally greasy and ever present, baseball cap (there are times, alas, when he calls to mind Andy Serkis playing Gollum.)
If all of this sounds depressing then it both is and it isn’t. When I first saw the film at Chapter late last year, the general consensus of the audience in the following Q&A with Paul Kelly seemed to be that the film was a tragi-comic documentary about a deluded, failed pop star; with Lawrence cast as a kind of real life, indie David Brent. This was clearly to miss the point – Lawrence is a very important artist who has made some of the most important records of the eighties and early nineties. What is sad about the film is Lawrence’s continuing lack of recognition and the hand to mouth life he is living as a result; at one particularly heartbreaking moment in the film he sells his famous ‘Felt’ emblazoned guitar for £600.
(…)
Lawrence of Belgravia is a film made up of such apparent contradictions. Paul Kelly has given us a portrait of a forgotten genius, which for all its downbeat moments, is both hilarious and inspiring. As Lawrence says at one point, ‘no one has ever gone this far without making it.’ It may even be that this film changes all that.”

Code 594 - Malicious Mischief by thegirlnamedcove
(1/1 I 1,454 I Mature)
“I’m not helping you steal a laptop!”
“It’ll be fun, sourwolf, think of it as stealth practice.”
“I’ll think of it as a misdemeanor you little shit.”
the thing with the guy in the place by ceserabeau
(1/1 I 3,326 I General)
“Let me guess, you want to rob a casino?” Scott holds up three fingers and Stiles’ eyebrows shoot upwards. “Three casinos?”
Or, the Ocean's Eleven AU that no one asked for.
The Heart of the Pack by ArientheSun
(1/1 I 4,256 I Teen)
A single massive ruby, red as blood, red as the juice of the pomegranate that so ensnared Persephone, sat encased by glass on a pedestal in the centre of the small room. Its facetted, asymmetrical face threw spots of pink brilliance along the walls and floor. Stiles could have sworn he saw it pulse slightly, like a broken heart that had been resurrected as crystal. A sign above aptly named it the Queen’s Broken Heart.
Derek met Stiles' eyes, and not a single word nor smile passed between them. But Stiles could see the amusement in his dark eyes, and the reproach. You’re insane to believe we can pull this off.   Stiles just blinked slowly as Derek stepped away.
You’re insane if you think we can’t.
Oddities in Oslo by Shinigami24
(14/14 I 5,028 I Teen)
On the last leg of their European vacation, the detectives are expecting a bit more rest. Instead they get a heist. The case brings them to the point of exhaustion.
A heist a day keeps the feelings at bay by sterekanigans
(1/1 I 6,671 I Teen)
Never let it be said that being a criminal was easy. No, no, far from the glamorous life the movies would have you believe.
Throw into the equation a rival criminal who is intent on taking all your targets? Stiles’ career as a multi-million-dollar criminal has been threatened ever since Derek goddamn Hale entered the scene one long, painful year ago.
And he’s ready to set the record straight.
Or the one where everyone is a criminal and Stiles and Derek have an insane amount of sexual tension.
Mozart In A Go-Kart by AsagiStilinski
(5/5 I 58,548 I Teen)
"What about your name?"
"Stiles," he replied simply, offering the man a smile
"Stiles?" the waiter repeated, a smirk touching his lips
"Your name is Stiles?"

i’ve always been intrigued by this record. i really find lawrence kind of annoying (felt has never fully done it for me) but there’s something about the tinny kitsch of this first go kart mozart album i find sooo fun. appeals to 5 year old naomi obsessed with they might be giants
youtube
this song is insane to me because it shows such crazy talent like. the first half is practically unlistenable and then it turns into this lovely midi rock n roll thing where lawrence is like a really adept singer and it becomes clear he just chooses to do the most abrasive shit he can

Blinded By The Light ~ Manfred Mann’s Earth Band
Blinded by the light Revved up like a deuce Another runner in the night Blinded by the light
Madman drummer bummers Indians in the summer With a teenage diplomat In the dumps with the mumps As the adolescent pumps His way into his hat With a boulder on my shoulder Feeling kinda older I tripped a merry-go-round With this very unpleasing Sneezing and wheezing The calliope crashed to the ground The calliope crashed to the ground
But she was blinded by the light Revved up like a deuce Another runner in the night Blinded by the light Revved up like a deuce Another runner in the night Blinded by the light Revved up like a deuce Another runner in the night
Some silicone sister With her manager mister Told me I got what it takes She said, I'll turn you on sonny to something strong Play the song with the funky break And go-kart Mozart Was checking out the weather chart To see if it was safe outside And little Early Pearly Came by in his curly-wurly And asked me if I needed a ride Asked me if I needed a ride
'Cause she was blinded by the light Revved up like a deuce Another runner in the night Blinded by the light
She got down but she never got tight She's gonna make it to the night She's gonna make it through the night
But mama, that's where the fun is But mama, that's where the fun is
~ ♫♪♫♪ ~
Mama always told me not to look into the eyes of the sun But mama, that's where the fun is
Some brimstone baritone Anticyclone rolling stone Preacher from the east Says, "Dethrone the Dictaphone Hit it in its funny bone That's where they expect it least." And some new mown chaperone Was standing in the corner Watching the young girls dance And some fresh-sown moonstone Was messing with his frozen zone Reminding him of romance
The calliope crashed to the ground
But she was blinded by the light Revved up like a deuce Another runner in the night Blinded by the light Revved up like a deuce Another runner in the night
(Madman drummers bummers and Indians in the summer with a teenage diplomat In the dumps with the mumps as the adolescent pumps his way into his hat)
Blinded by the light Revved up like a deuce Another runner in the night Blinded by the light Revved up like a deuce Another runner in the night
(With a boulder on my shoulder feelin' kinda older I tripped the merry-go-round With this very unpleasing sneezing and wheezing the calliope crashed to the ground)
Blinded by the light Revved up like a deuce Another runner in the night Blinded by the light Revved up like a deuce Another runner in the night
(And now Scott with a slingshot finally found a tender spot and throws his lover in the sand And some bloodshot forget-me-not whispers daddy's within earshot save the buckshot turn up the band.)
Blinded by the light Revved up like a deuce Another runner in the night Blinded by the light Revved up like a deuce Another runner in the night
(Some silicone sister with her manager mister told me I got what it takes She said I'll turn you on sonny to something strong)

- November 21st 2022 -
What type of milk do you like to drink? Just regular whole milk or 2% milk, even better if it's from one of the many local dairy farms. I like oat milk too, but I mostly use that in smoothies rather than drinking it.
Do you have a first aid kit at home? Yep, one in the upstairs hall closet and one in each of the cars.
What's the absolute bare minimum in terms of facilities when you're camping? I haven't been camping since I was 18 and I was extremely low-maintenance back then, I would have been fine with zero facilities at all (aside from just the gear I brought with me). Nowadays I don't think I could go camping, I know that sleeping on the ground or even on a cot would give me horrific back/neck pain.
How many places have you lived in your life? 11 different homes (12 if you count when I lived in campus housing). Seven towns/cities, across four states.
Are your parents dog or cat people? Is that different or the same as you? They're definitely dog people. They've never had a cat. I'm not really either a dog person or a cat person, I like parrots the best.
What's your favourite flavour of potato chip? I mildly dislike most potato chips, but barbecue or sour cream and onion are alright.
What's the longest your hair has ever been? How long is it now? It's currently the longest it's ever been. It's almost down to my elbows which is totally insane. I actually don't like it being this freakin long, but I hate going to salons and I tend to procrastinate on giving myself hair cuts.
What video games remind you of your childhood? Super Mario 64, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, Mario Kart 64.
What does your body wash or soap smell like? It has a very faint vanilla scent.
Are there are sounds that bother you on a visceral level? Yep... I have hyperacusis so pretty much any sound that's over 70 decibels (a little louder than conversation level) gives me nerve pain in my inner ears and feels like it's twice as loud as it really is. And it's way worse if it's a high-pitched sound. I wear earplugs or earmuffs on a daily basis, while cooking/washing dishes/going to the store/etc., they're quite literally accessibility aids for me.
What was the last thing you bought online? F10 veterinary disinfectant. I use it to clean my birds' cages/perches/toys/etc.
Name something you always have in your fridge. Milk. I drink tea every morning and always take it with a bit of milk.
Have you ever had to hire a lawyer? Why? Nope.
Have you taken a walk today? Did you see any dogs? Nope, it was like 10 below freezing all day today and I didn't feel like getting all bundled up for a walk.
What vegetable do you really hate? The only vegetable I dislike is cauliflower.
Does your family have any traditions or rituals? Yep, my husband and I have some. We give each other back massages every night before bed, and we go out for ice cream during a snowstorm at least once per winter. Probably some more that I'm forgetting. And also my parents/brother/grandparents and I have traditions from when I was growing up.
If you could learn any language, what would it be? I'd want to get better at French, or learn German.
What was the best thing that happened today? Something that seems minor can still be awesome. Dinner was really delicious.
Have you ever donated money to a charity? Which one? Yep, I make monthly donations to two charities. One is my state's abortion fund, and the other is a charity that helps further women's rights in developing countries.
Did you have a large circle of friends in high school? Not really. I was kind of a floater. I floated around between different groups of friends. I had a more cohesive group of friends when I was in middle school, though.
Would you ever get a matching tattoo with someone? Nope, I've never wanted any tattoos in general.
What are your top 5 favourite bands? Mozart (not a band but I'll still list his works as my favorite of all time), Beethoven (same thing), Pink Floyd, Metallica, Coldplay (but not their recent stuff).
What time do you usually go to sleep? Lmao, lately it's been like 4-5 a.m. But I likely have a circadian rhythm disorder and my body clock is just naturally delayed... it's just a bit TOO delayed lately. I need to try to get back to a 1-2 a.m. bedtime.
Do you have a job? Sort of. I swing trade stocks. I work so little that I have a hard time calling it a real job haha.
What colour are the plates in your kitchen? White with a thin navy band around the edges.
What was the last gift you received? I think it was flowers?
What is your Chinese zodiac animal? I don't know.
Are you inside right now? If you're home, what room of the house are you in? Yep. I'm in the smaller living room that we use as a study.
Are you good at remembering faces? Nope not at all. I have mild face blindness and I won't remember what a person looks like until I've seen them at least several times (unless their appearance is super distinctive, then I'll remember them more quickly).
What will you do after this survey? I might make a cup of chamomile tea.

Harley’s New Hydra-Glide Revival Cruiser Revs Up The 1950s Nostalgia
Instead of coming out with a bike that there people can ride there's two groups of it ain't assholes came out with bikes that their leaders can't even ride pretty much at all and the max are not buying it as a matter of fact they stopped purchasing Harley-Davidsons last month when they saw with the new additions were all about and all these bikes are sitting there doing nothing and we are hesitant to ride them too no we're taking them and writing them in our areas. We don't really get what you're doing cuz Chris kroll is saying he's going to build more.
I'm sorry good with the game is supposed to be but the max don't care and don't bother as much and we're not seen doing the fairest things nefarious things and they don't know it's us some of you are riding around with them and can barely handle them so they say they're trying to trace us down by who can handle the bike but it looks kind of the same and if we're bigger and stronger it looks normal so the test is not working but they're going to build more for us to take and we're going to take them and we reinforce them and we're using them to get around and to run maneuvers and soon we'll be out here doing it and we're buying enough of them now we're using enough they're going to continue production man we say they don't make enough to make a difference but that's the way they want it and they're going to make a bunch but I'm going to use it against them and we are that's what they wanted and we say so what hahaha so there's one thing that's going on and they're increasing production by 10 times and the small bike there production by about 20 times and that's for them they say and it has to be because they're teeny and we're going on to another topic what about this area again and we hear it it's annoying they're at us the whole time and I'm going to pass them off to polish them off
-something's happened this morning and the pseudo empire was yelled at and we say so what and her son does too and daughter you're going to get raped by the empire fighting the idiots and you're useless pile of s*** just like they are if the leaders come out of it that's fine most of them are stupid or have a brain in front that's useless that is why we don't care and we set up the courthouse thing and you're all in there one purpose that kind of knows but he can't get him to go somewhere else because he can't drive far enough so he lets him do the laundry there and he hates you people and we hate you too
-there's a ton of things going on what we said was happening last night here is going on they're being reduced and reduced globally and they have drops percentages it's not really a massive but it's going to be shortly when they find out that the empire is actually taking everything and using it too and they're building other stuff and they're using what they took is cover and it is going to be a big war and you're going to face huge armies with what you have left more luck and the foreigners hate you too right now your islands are under attack ing information somewhat mild with the country increased pretty soon for us we are going to have put out a lot more later coming up soon

2023: Most important thing is family
First year I’ve felt a shift from my “forever young” lifestyle to realizing we are getting old. Our friends no longer join every big event. Both our grandmothers passed away earlier this year. We’ve also had some health problems we’ve had to manage. There’s more time spent at home with continued house maintenance and remodeling projects (and a little of relaxation when possible). I guess since we spend more time at home, we keep improving it. But overall, I’m like “what’s going on? Are we boring? Oh, we are just getting older”, blah.
The biggest focus this year has been family. Between birthdays, funerals, national holidays, and newborn family member, we traveled 8 times in the year to spend time with family. With all the life changes, I cherish the time I spend with our family.
Workwise, this year I hired three new people for my team, and it was the first time in 5 years working at Barr Engineering that I felt the workload was finally manageable. All those years of stress finally paid off; I have a solid team, way more money (ha!) and Barr did an article about me so getting some industry recognition.
Traveling to a new place or visiting family is my favorite thing to do. Here’s this year’s list, 9 different states and 3 new countries, not one full month spent in Denver.
JANUARY:
Jackson Hole, WY snowboarding with friends (Highlight: seeing a moose on the ski run!!)
Tumblr media
FEBRUARY:
Taos, NM snowboarding trip with friends for my 38th birthday (Highlight: live music at a bar)
Tumblr media
MARCH:
Tucson, AZ for work NAEM conference (Highlight: cucumber vodka lemonades)
APRIL:
Houston, TX for abuelita’s celebration of life
MAY:
Birmingham, MI for Luka’s birthday
Tumblr media
JUNE:
Vienna, Austria trip with my mom (Highlights: ALL THE ART!! Absolute best and champagne breaks)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
JULY:
Collbran, CO camping for 4th of July
Lake George, NY for Betty Brown’s celebration of life
AUGUST:
Nagawicka Lake, WI for grandpa Bob’s 95th birthday
Tumblr media
Serbia and Montenegro for our 5th year wedding anniversary (Highlights: Basketball player Boban Marjanovic being at the same restaurant and all the cats in Montenegro)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SEPTEMBER:
Houston, TX for business trip (Highlight: Got to see SanJuanita and parents for a night)
OCTOBER:
Minneapolis, MN for work training
NOVEMBER:
Birmingham, MI for sisbro’s birthday and went to see Metallica (Highlight: Detroit Institute of Art with so many dutch paintings)
Tumblr media
Tampa, FL for Thanksgiving with the Brown family (Highlights: Salvador Dali, wild dolphins and saving Sofi)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
DECEMBER:
Houston, TX for Christmas with the family (Highlight: Go Karts with the siblings!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The times I wasn’t traveling but stayed in Denver were memorable: 1- Goat yoga 2- Getting a limo to see SOFI TUKKER at Red Rocks 3- Bridgerton themed brunch with Elizabeth 4- Indoor mini golf with friends where I won :D 5- Denver Nuggets won the NBA championship and my obsession with Jokic started 6- Seeing The Book of Mormon 7- Makeup class with Kate at Sephora, and finally learning better makeup techniques (I know what to do with primer and bronzer) 8- Obsessed with Women’s World Cup games 9- Vivas Streets where Denver closed Broadway and Welton and had it open for bikers/walkers and no cars. So much fun. 10- Free outdoor movie The Goonies at Curtis Park 11- Tried something new: Hip Hop class with Holly 12- Seeing Jerry Seinfeld 13- Discovered new favorite restaurants: Jovanina’s Broken Italian and Bao Brewhouse
Relax time at home:
Creating art of any form is my favorite pastime. And this year I’ve become obsessed with creating miniatures. A few inspired by my recent travels: Mozart's home after Austria and Porto Winery after Portugal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Favorite books I read this year: o The Blueprint for Revolution by Srdja Popovic o All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr
Bigger focus on skin care. I have a routine of drinking tea collagen every morning, take vitamins and use serum. The occasional face mask.
Favorite TV shows/Movies in 2023:
Shrinking
Beef
Transatlantic
Ted Lasso
Air
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar
BARBIE!!
With all the art obsession this year I came up with our Halloween costume: Vincent Van Gogh and The Starry Night
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Baby news!
New nephew Noah born in February 2023 and new baby announcement from Justin and Vanessa again on the same year! (another boy!)
Owen and Pearl had their baby Soren on November 7, 2023.
My 2024 wishes are for better health and continued happiness <3

'I'd rather be a tramp than reform my old bands': Lawrence on life as Britain's music's greatest singer | India
‘I’d rather be a tramp than reform my old bands’: Lawrence on life as Britain’s music’s greatest singer | India
Jhe most uncompromising figure in British pop has an urgent question: “Do you need the toilet?” Meet Lawrence (no last names, please), the mastermind behind Felt’s bodied good looks, Denim’s slick glam-rock and Go-Kart Mozart’s earworms, now renamed Mozart Estate. As we walk to her council flat in east London, I promise her my bladder is empty. “Are you sure?” it persists in its Midlands air. “Do…
