Blog Post 4: Video Game Lab

The first game I played was called "Diddle Diddle Hey." This game was similar to Super Mario, in which the game is a 2D visual platform where you run along an obstacle course to reach the end. In this game, your character is a spoon, and you are trying to reunite with the dish, which is waiting at the end of the run. You use the keyboard to play, pressing space to jump up onto the obstacles. The "A" key is used to go left. The "D" key is used to go right. The "Space" key is used to jump. The mechanics include the spoon character, the courses the spoon runs, and the levels. The dynamics include completion of the levels and the interaction of the spoon with the landscape. The aesthetic of this game is challenge as you are supposed to beat the obstacle course.

The second game that related to "Diddle Diddle Hey," "This is The Only Level," featured a game in which the level map was the exact same every level. What changed between the levels was how to move the character around the map or effects applied to the character. The mechanics of this game include the little character, the timer, the obstacles, and the button. The dynamics include challenge as the player needs to complete the level to move to the next, being timed, and figuring out how to move the character. The aesthetic, like "Diddle Diddle Hey," is challenge since you are also trying to complete the obstacle course to reach the next level. Playing the game myself, I felt like I was rushing due to the timer at the bottom. I kept going fast and messing up instead of slowing down and moving along the obstacle well. While watching my partner play the game, I realized she was doing the same, slightly panicking and wanting to move fast.

For the third game played, I played "The Ratchelor." This game was different from the first two as it was a narrative game. It is like the reality show "The Bachelor," but the contestants are all rats. It was a storyline narrative game where you choose the rat contestants that move on in the stages. You eventually pick the rat that you fall in love with. This was a dating simulator game, and you got to choose your own path. The path could be different each time you play if you make different choices.

- Game Proposal -

Even though in previous projects I have spent a lot of time trying to work on my 3D modelling and texturing, this project I wanted to go back to doing pixel art. I really enjoyed the pixel art project for our very first game, I’ts is extremely less technical than 3D modelling. Over The last year I've been doing a lot of research on Character design and colour grading, which will be very helpful for the game I would like to produce this term. All the character design I have been doing outside of school hasn't yet been used within my projects as they are all mostly first person. Mainly for this project I really wanted to try something new and go back to the basics and explore the pixel artstyle some more.

For this randomisation project I’d like to take a different approach to my usual style and focus less on the art and more on the story/dialogue and the character creation. As in some of my projects the story and concept are underdeveloped due to spending so much time 3D modelling and coding materials. I'd love to experiment more with shading in pixel art and look at using more colours and softer lines in my art. The genre/theme I would like to explore is possibly a romance/comedy. I'd like an opportunity to start writing dialogue and play with the idea of contrasting characters in a project. Games that I've been inspired by for this project are ‘Star dew valley’, the ‘ratchelor’ and ‘the mad father’. These are all pixel-art games however I will also be looking at illustrated games for my research like ‘Monster prom’ and ‘a night in the woods’. I would like to have funny and odd characters for this game to highlight the random aspect of the game but also to make the game a little more lighthearted and fun.

Before finishing this project I would have liked to have started the game with character dialogue and maybe 2-3 characters you are able to have a conversation with. For example assets for the characters and dialogue beside it.
