GATE Preparation
DAY 1
In 2017, I began my preparation for the JEE. Despite my best efforts, I was unable to secure a spot in top-tier colleges like the IITs or NITs. Currently, I'm pursuing a B.Tech in ECE from a tier-2 college in Delhi. However, my ambition hasn't waned. While there's a pang of regret about not getting into premier institutions, I'm gearing up to prepare for the GATE 2024. It might be a late start, but I'm ready for this new journey.

GATE Electronics and Communications - Let us get started with the syllabus
Once a student has decided to write GATE, the next step should be to know and understand the syllabus. Becoming familiar with the syllabus always helps to keep a student on track with preparation and motivated. Among the many streams GATE exam offers, Electronics and Communications has a promising future and thus very sought after. To cut it to the top in the ECE stream, one needs to be well prepared and have the right mindset.
To help candidates get closer to their dream, we at VISHWA have put together the GATE Electronics and Communications syllabus. We hope this will give clarity for all GATE CSE aspirants and motivate their preparation.
Like all other streams, general aptitude and engineering mathematics remain common to ECE too. General aptitude usually doesn’t require dedicated effort. But honing your problem-solving skills and getting the right mindset to solve the questions indeed give a winning edge. Engineering mathematics is foundational, and one needs a good understanding of basic mathematics taught during their engineering course. The bulk of the questions (around 70%) is given to the core stream - ECE, and this is where students need to focus their energies on.
Let us look at the sections in ECE one needs to know along with the themes under each section :
Networks, signals, and systems - Network analysis, continuous and discrete-time signals
Electronic devices - Energy     bands, equilibrium carrier concentration, direct and indirect bandgap     semiconductors, diffusion current, drift current, Poisson continuity     equations, photodiode, and solar cell
Analog circuits - Diode     circuits - clipping, clamping, rectifiers, small-signal analysis, AC     coupling, amplifiers, differentiators, active filters, Schmitt triggers, and     oscillators
Digital circuits  - Number representations - binary,     integer, floating-point numbers, combinatorial circuits, sequential     circuits, data converters, semiconductor memories, computer organization
Control systems - Basic     control system components, feedback principle, transfer function, signal     flow graph, bode and root locus plots, state variable model
Communications - Random     processes, analog communications, autocorrelation, boundary conditions,     wave equations, information theory, digital communications
Electromagnetics - Maxwell's     equation, plane and wave properties, rectangular and circular waveguides,     light propagation in optical fibers, characteristic impedance.
The themes mentioned above are not exhaustive but are indicative of what the student is likely to encounter in the exam. The syllabus is a guiding tool for preparation. For more detailed insights, it is best to seek professional help such as a good coaching institute or from successful seniors. Our in-house experts at VISHWA have curated lectures, reading material, and question banks that will be of immense use to any candidate preparing for GATE EC.
The key advantage of preparing with a coaching institute is developing the right methodology for preparation. It is not sufficient to be well-versed in the topics but also have the problem-solving bent of mind. Candidates need to think on their feet and be adept at coming up with easier ways of tackling problems. It is with these things in mind that VISHWA has come up with the SMART GATE program for EC candidates. Those who require extended support can avail the program up to 2024.
