Daphne Hatcher has been a full-time studio potter for over forty years. A third-generation native Texan, Daphne established Pine Mills Pottery with her husband Gary in the woodlands of northeast Texas in 1979. The studio was begun after three years of apprenticeship training in England, France and Greece, including eighteen months with David Leach and twelve months with Michael Leach.
"Control, surrender, the integration of surface and form: these are considerations I have focused on for the past thirty+ years as a potter. I have fired pots with glazed surfaces in various kilns, often with complex layers and patterns, but wood firing provides the balance between control and surrender I seek. I pay careful attention to the skin of the pot and use judicial application of glaze to enhance whatever the flame grants me.
The platters I am creating now represent my interest in a painterly approach to glaze application, using the platter’s flat surface as a canvas and allowing the flame to gently alter the glaze. In this series of platters I have chosen two metaphors: that of the Portal, drawing one in, and that of the Eye, that observes, looking out. The Portal is an entry into that which cannot yet be seen or experienced, a mystery to be explored. The Eye takes in the present, which surrounds, the information rippling into infinity, as on the surface of a pond when one drop of rain penetrates the surface.
Be still, be quiet, pay attention, take it in and continue to explore."

Oh yeah! I've always loved this photo, for obvious reasons. It took a somber tone after Coach Leach's passing (RIP Coach Leach). Garebear still looks hot as f... 🥵😈

Anniversary Present - Pt. 6
Click here to read Part 5 and find out how Jace and Levi ended up in 1966. Or start over with Part 1.
Tumblr media
Once they got into the living room, Levi’s face grew serious, all business. “Alright Jace, I know you’re… incapacitated. But who knows how long I’ll have the brain of a scientist, so I’m gonna need you to focus. I’ve established that this watch was made using a type of metal alloy that hasn’t actually been invented yet, so we’re not going to be able to create a new dial, or retrofit the other dial to take us forward.”
Jace nodded, pretending he understood.
“However, have you ever heard of the concept of the Big Bang?”
“No, but that sounds far out.”
“It is. I am 99% certain that if we set the dial to slip us back farther and farther in time at an increasingly rapid rate, it will whip us back to the beginning of time and that incredible force will propel us forward again. We just need to chart a course for a specific year so we can set our speed to the exact momentum required to boomerang us to where we began. This will destroy the watch, so we only have one shot at it. So we need to do two things. First, acquire a fine-toothed comb. I can break off one of the teeth and that will allow me to get inside the watch and adjust the mechanism. The width and composition of a comb in this era should be perfect for not interfering with the watch’s start drive and sending us back in time before we’re ready. I’m going to need you to find this item. In the meantime, I will use my vague memories of how many jumps we’ve made and their duration to extrapolate what our starting year was, so I can set the watch properly. There’s no time to lose. I’m counting on you, my love.”
He gave Jace a kiss on his scraggly, bearded face, and sent him out the front door with a smack on the ass before sitting down at the coffee table with a pencil and paper.
———
He was on a mission, so Jace’s wandering was at least going in one direction. But where did one acquire a comb? He clearly hadn’t brushed his hair in years, so it was hard to remember… He decided to check if his neighbor Gary was home. He couldn’t quite call to mind what form he was in during this decade, so he walked over to his front door and rang the doorbell, humming gently to himself while he waited.
Gary opened the door.
“Well, I’m guessing you don’t have a comb,” Jace mumbled.
Tumblr media
Gary grinned. “No, I wouldn’t say so, mate. But come in! Let me see if I can help.”
Ten minutes later, Jace was seated on the couch opposite Gary, having devoured half a plate of cookies. While brushing the crumbs out of his beard, he said “Now it would be just groovy if I could remember…”
As he racked his brain, he felt a wave of dizziness. He shook his head, his lank hair falling in front of his eyes. As he tried to push it back over his shoulders, he felt it slip out of his fingers, retracting back into his head. The auburn color leached out from the roots to the tips until his new short hair was a bright, natural blond. His eye brows lightened to the same color and thinned out as his glasses vanished into thin air. His beard also retracted into his face, revealing  preternaturally smooth skin as his chin suddenly dented into a cleft like it had been hit with a tire iron.
His sparse chest hair vanished as a shirt draped itself across his torso, but it began to feel tight on his shoulders as his arms beefed up with muscle, his biceps straining against being restricted. His watched stayed on, however, and he saw it now read 19:54. As new memories settled into his head of growing up as a teen idol and preparing to make his big Hollywood debut, he watched idly as Gary writhed on the couch opposite him.
Tumblr media
Gary’s prim suit jacket had entirely vanished, but his white shirt remained. It was clearly struggling however, and the sleeves ripped down the center as his biceps bulged out from their constraints. As his back muscles widened, the sleeves were sheared off entirely and fluttered to the ground as what remained of the fabric rippled and became a softer, cotton material. As his jaw widened and became more square, his hair rose up of its own accord, the color draining to a chestnut brown. As if it was a balloon being blown up, his hair seemed to expand as it volumized into a glorious bouffant.
He shifted slightly on the couch, his pants squeaking as they became battered leather, the material seeming to spread to the couch beneath him as it became leather as well.
Suddenly, Jace’s thoughts snapped into place. “Yes! I was here looking for a comb!”
Gary’s eyes lit up and he cooly straddled the back of the couch. “Well I wouldn’t be a greaser worth my salt if I didn’t have one of THOSE.”
Tumblr media
Jace nervously approached his house, hoping that whatever form Levi had become would still be smart enough to pull off the intricate job of getting them back to their original time. As he stepped over the threshold, his eyes needed to adjust to the room’s dim lighting. All the curtains had been drawn, and the interior was filled with smoke and burnished wood. A half empty drink cart was idling in the corer of the living room.
He heard Levi’s voice floating from a room down the hall and he peeked through the doorway to see his husband was on the phone.
Tumblr media
The dapper businessman held up one finger and gestured for Jace to take a seat in one of the leather armchairs in his home office. He grinned cockily, “Well make sure to get that file to me by Monday, or this whole deal goes through. And don’t go chasing skirts until you are CERTAIN it’s been double checked, Johnson. Alright. Yes, you’d better. Bye.” He hung up the phone and Jace nervously give him a once-over.
“Did you have time to figure everything out?”
Levi poured himself a whisky and swirled it in his hand. “Don’t get your panties in a bunch. I thought this might happen, so I wrote down detailed instructions for myself. All I wasn’t able to do while I was a scientist was figure out our source year. However, I work smarter, not harder.” He slid a piece of paper over to Jace and tapped it proudly. It read “Starting point - 2006.”
Jace inspected it and noticed some smudged writing at the top. “Well, what does that say?”
Levi shrugged. “Does it matter? We clearly wrote down our source year before all this happened. We’re golden!”

Nipper, the Listening Dog in Bristol, England There are many famous and infamous historical figures associated with the maritime city of Bristol. From Archibald Leach, better known as the Hollywood film star Gary Grant, to the mysterious and elusive Banksy. But there is one who walks on all fours and has a small statue dedicated in their honor. No, not Gromit from Wallace and Gromit fame, but rather, Nipper, a mixed-breed terrier, who would go on to be recognized as the mascot of HMV (His Master's Voice). Nipper belonged to the Barraud family, whose children christened him with the unusual name because of his unruly habit of nipping at the ankles of their guests. The father, Mark worked for the Prince's Theatre, which was located on Park Row, and is known as the Merchant Ventures Building, now a part of Bristol University. Mark had two brothers: Francis, a painter, and Phillip, a photographer. After Mark passed away, Nipper was left in Francis's care. At some point, Phillip captured the canine in a photo, as he tilted his head at a playing Edison brand gramophone. A few years later, Francis used the image to paint a portrait that he titled, His Master's Voice. Initially, Francis tried to sell his painting to the Edison company, but was told that "dogs don't listen to phonographs." He then retouched the portrait, etching out the Edison name, and approached a competing business: the Berliner Gramophone Company. In 1899, they bought the painting and rights to the copyrighted image for £150.00. The company then changed its name to HMV and the rest, they would say, is history. The image of Nipper, who was buried under a Mulberry bush in London at the age of 11 in 1895, became the company's logo, and the logo of its successors, including RCA Records in America. It was used to sell everything from life-sized piggy banks to coffee mugs. Larger-than-life depictions of Nipper can be found as an oversized statue in Baltimore, Maryland, to a gigantic effigy in Menands, New York. Not bad for a little mutt who used to terrorize visitors in Bristol.  https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/nipper-the-listening-dog-statue
