HOW DO FEMALE ATHLETES MANAGE THEIR PERIODS?
We are amidst euphoria when our female athletes like Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu, Mary Kom etc win a gold or silver at the Olympics making our country proud on an international level. But have you ever wondered how female athletes manage their periods? Do they have a second thought while competing? Does it affect their performance? Let’s figure it out! In 2016, a Chinese swimmer Fu Yuanhui had her periods before the Rio Olympics and yet she bagged the bronze medal. And made it loud & clear at the press meet that she wasn’t using her periods as an excuse for not bagging the gold. So, do periods really affect a female athlete's performance? There is no substantial evidence to show that menstruation impacts athletic performance. “But it is really a very tough time for us,” says a female athlete. In certain cases, some female athletes lose their ability to get their periods as the brain sends the wrong signal to the uterus and that ultimately results in no periods, which is called amenorrhea. And some female athletes choose to use birth control pills to postpone their periods. Doctors strongly recommend not to pop these pills just before the event as it might lead to decreased performance efficiency. Interestingly, the other way that female athletes use it is – to manage their periods. And that is by using a “period tracker.” That actually helps them keep track of their periods and keeps stress about the uncertainty at bay. Finally, it's safe to conclude that periods or no periods, female athletes like Mirai Nagasu, Fu Yuanhui etc are always on and don’t fail to make headlines with their athletic achievements despite the problems which they face! #Periods #FemaleAthletes #FuYuanhui #Olympics #RioOlympics #Athletes #lemmebe #Just_LemmeBe Jaya Prakash, Intern @just.lemmebe

FEEL YOU, FU: "Chinese sports fans used social media to praise Fu for breaking the silence surrounding the menstrual cycles of female athletes. Many said they had not realised it was possible for a woman to swim during her period. 'Our Ms Fu dares to say anything,' wrote one user of Weibo, China’s Twitter" (thanks for the heads up @alibaby90) #fuyuanhui #normalizeperiods #bloooood

A Swimmer's 'Period' Comment Breaks Taboos In Sports — And In China
Fu Yuanhui, a Chinese swimmer at the Rio Olympics, made headlines this week for telling the world she was on her period.
On Sunday, when she finished fourth in the women's 4x100 meter medley relay, an interviewer found her doubled over and grimacing. She asked Fu if she was in pain.
"Actually, my period started last night, so I'm feeling pretty weak and really tired," Fu told the interviewer in Mandarin, according to an English-subtitled video on Shanghai Expat's YouTube channel. "But this isn't an excuse. At the end of the day, I just didn't swim very well."
The interview turned Fu into an overnight sensation on Weibo, a Chinese social media site, reported the New York Times: She broke the silence around menstruation in sports.
According to The Guardian, one commenter wrote, "It is a normal physiological phenomenon, so why can't we mention it? Fu Yuanhui is awesome!"
The swimmer's remark also shed light on shifting Chinese attitudes toward periods.
"It tells us a lot about what's going on in China today," says Susan Greenhalgh, a professor who focuses on Chinese society at Harvard University's department of anthropology. "The vocal empowerment of young people and the fact that gender issues are coming to the fore, it's exciting."

The 2016 Summer Olympics – All of Joy
The 2016 Summer Olympics is continuing, today I’m very glad to talk about some respectable and cute people in this game: Fu Xu Lijia, Yuanhui.
Xu Lijia(徐莉佳) – is a Chinese sailboat racer who won a bronze medal in women’s Laser Radial class at the 2008 Summer Olympics and a gold medal in the same event at the 2012 Summer Olympics. I like her very much in this year’s Olympic Games, let’s review her…
