 Tsubasa Kawaguchi "Breathless"
Photographer: Tsubasa Kawaguchi website
Publisher: Fugensha, 2023
Photography begins with a photograph. Rejecting all forms of expression or description, I want a photograph to simply be a photograph from beginning to end. This is ultimately a matter of purity, and not anything that can be achieved through things like image quality, tonality, theme, or concept. -Tsubasa Kawaguchi
Tsubasa Kawaguchi’s debut photobook Breathless is a gasp of fresh air against the pursuit of technical perfection and labored expressive intent. Winner of the second Fugensha Photo Award, this collection of magenta-tinged scruffy jpegs hits the heart.
My article for this book can be found here.

Wang Lu “Frozen are the Winds of Time”
Wang Lu “Frozen are the Winds of Time” at Communication Gallery Fugensha Media: Photography (2021-09-16 - 2021-10-03)
Wang Lu is a photographer, born in 1989 in Shanxi, China, graduated from Musashino Art University, Department of Imaging Arts and Design, and is currently a graduate student at Tokyo University of the Arts, Department of Advanced Art Expression. In 2019, Wang was selected as a finalist for the 20th edition of “Wall”, an honorable mention for Canon New Cosmos of Photography, and was selected for the 2nd edition of “Shines”. In 2020, she was selected by Aperture Magazine for “Critics’ Choice 2020” hosted by LensCulture. Wang’s father, who lives in his hometown, suffered severe brain damage in an accident when Wang was 12 years old. His intelligence has been reduced to the level of a young child, and his perception of his closest family members has been compromised. The diary of a confused and anguished mother who suddenly finds herself in such a situation with her growing daughter is vivid and heartbreaking. On the other hand, Wang’s hometown, Taiyuan in Shanxi Province, China, has developed at a high speed in recent years due to the urban development plan promoted by the mayor. Seeing the familiar scenery of high-rise buildings, new roads, well-developed parks, and rubble under construction being urbanized so quickly, she said that every time he returned home, she felt like she was in a foreign country. However, the people who live there still speak and dress the same as before, creating an incongruous contrast with the urbanized environment. With Wang’s hometown, a provincial city in China undergoing urban development, as a backdrop, this exhibition uses photographs of her own father and mother, as well as her mother’s diary, as clues to create a portrait of a family.
