Reading the POTO novel for the first time and for as much as people claim “ALW romanticized the Phantom” I would argue he “romanticized” Raoul. Raoul in the book is annoying af and has a really weird superiority-inferiority complex. Just your average 21 yr old scrawny young man. Not at all like the Prince Charming he’s made out to be in the musical.
He’s out here slut shaming Christine LIKE WHAT??????
Honestly, The Phantom AND Raoul got a glow up in the musical, they should be thankful.

The fact I went from the Wednesday fandom and being a huge defender of Tyler Galpin, to the Phantom of the Opera phandom and becoming a huge defender of Raoul de Chagny, probably means something, I think. My poor golden retriever boys :((

When I read the original Phantom of the Opera novel, one amusing detail I found was that Erik's Red Death costume quite literally has "don't touch me" embroidered on the cape. This mental image immediately popped into my head: as the youngest of four, Raoul couldn't resist.

christine haters that loves erik are so funny to me. you can excuse murder but you'll draw the line at "*insert the most minor flaw a character can have, ever*"?

Would you like to see Simon Bailey as phantom? I'm surprised they haven't cast him. He has a stronger and prettier voice than Killian Donnelly Imo
Yes, oh YES! So totally yes. My first impression of him was not brilliant: The promo video he and Gina Beck did at the Palais Garnier in 2008, singing AIAOY. He seemed quite nervous there, and sung a bit uneven. So I didn't have the biggest expectiations when saw him with Gina Beck as Christine in 2009, but I loved every single thing about his Raoul: Strong voice, determined, loveable, energetic. Excellent chemistry with his co-star. His Raoul bore every signs of a good Phantom in making. But maybe he'll be a Michael-Ball-Raoul: Perfect material, but apparently never happening...?
I have not dug into Killian Donnelly's Phantom portrayal so I can't really comment on that (sorry, but Lucy St Louis kinda stole all the thunder). Liked his Raoul a lot, however.
