Remember a time when Arch Enemy actually released good records? Pepperidge Farm remembers? This is Wages Of Sin, the bands fourth album and first with lead hottie - I mean lead vocalist Angela Gossow. I first read about Wages upon buying my first issue of @terrorizermag in 2002. If I recall, Terrorizer described their new sound (their previous record, Burning Bridges, was sad to be a little on the lighter side) as catchy #deathmetal, or at least death metal with Iron Maiden like hooks. I guess it helped that Wages was produced by Fredrik Nordstrom, the guitarist of Dream Evil. Power Metal: GAY. Keep in mind that AE guitarist/founder Michael Amott essentially invented Melodic Death Metal in the 90s while doing to @carcassband what Michael McDonald did to the Doobie Brothers in the mid 70s. So Arch Enemy was always going to be the next step in the advancement of "Melodeath". I hate that fucking term. Anyway, I was curious to hear what they sounded like. Months later I finally got my chance and my jaw dropped. Not because the riffs really were as catchy as they were balls out heavy, not because there was a great contrast between Michael Amott's Schencker-influenced melodic lead playing and brother Christopher Amott's far more technical shredding. That fucking ROAR. "Was that a bear?", as Butthead once asked? No. That was Angela, the hot blonde singer. And she was equally as scary as she was hot. Sold!
