I used to wander into the woods as I was a child in New York State when my household felt too hectic. I found a softening there, often laying in a sunny patch between the trees thinking I was a character from Fern Gully. . Now, I find myself in the same action, though my interaction has come to include my mountain bike, trail runners, splitboard, or tent. Maybe I’ve been cultivating this art practice all along. Maybe I’ve always been investigating connection to the land. Maybe I was just trying to get away. It’s hard to know now. . What does feel undeniable is that forests and wild landscapes are incredibly important not only to dynamic ecosystems but also to us humans. We may not literally grow roots into the soil... but we do. . Through Wonder We Learn :: @coastmtnacademy . #jessagilbertart . I took a quick stop in Squamish for an even quicker ride. I love revisiting murals, and this collab mural with @alexjfowkes feels so special at the @coastmtnacademy. . This mural is at the high school, which is in Squamish at the base of a myriad trails that spiderweb through some of the most stunning ferns and forest. I love envisioning the students learning in such a lush forest and being surrounded by the natural landscape. I like to imagine they feel connected to the environment here, and recognize just how special the coastal rain forest is. I wonder if they’ll learn to protect and advocate for these places they are so fortunate to call a classroom. .
