👴🏻 Ageism and double standards. 👴🏻
Have you seen the poster for February's "Highlanders - A Visit to the Highlands" event in Australia?
Below is a screenshot taken from the event page.
Tumblr media
*** *** *** … and today's post from X, formerly Twitter.
Tumblr media
Sure, James Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Fraser from the first season of Outlander was the handsomest man on earth, but shouldn't someone tell the organisers that ten years (and six seasons) later Jamie Fraser looks like this?
Tumblr media
And he's still beautiful, truly.
If a similar 'rejuvenation' operation had been performed on a woman, wouldn't there have been an immediate outcry that this was an act of violence, prejudice and discrimination? In short, ageism? 🤦🏻‍♀️
Poor guy, for all his talents and acting skills, he is still perceived mainly as a piece of (beautiful) meat. Embarrassing.

Fraser wrote the song's lyrics, inspired by the works of French philosopher Gaston Bachelard. While recording the song in 1997, she found out that Jeff Buckley, whom she had formerly had a relationship with, had disappeared—later discovered to have drowned. In 2009, she said, "That was so weird ... I'd got letters out and I was thinking about him. That song's kind of about him—that's how it feels to me anyway".
Is Teardrop by Massive Attack about Jeff Buckley?
Fraser was in an appropriately mournful state of mind when she recorded the song. The words, though esoteric almost to the point of incomprehension, are imbued with melancholy, born from Fraser's own sadness on learning about the death of her friend Jeff Buckley, who drowned in May 1997.Jan 26, 2018

I’ll meet you under Binns clock
Or The Maules Clock, or Frasers Clock, depending on yours age, will it be "I'll meet you under The Johnny Walker Clock" in future years?
Nah! ! It's not going to happen, the thing is in the digital age with our mobile phones there is no real need to arrange meets the old way, we call or text to say where we are and we sort of meet in between or in the nearest pub, don't we?
This was one of the most important parts of the Diageo makeover of the West End building formerly known as Maules, Binns and latterly as Frasers. The clock was the most popular meeting point for young romantics in the days before mobile phones made last minute changes to arrangements possible.
The clock features hand painted highland figures which march out of the clock to strike the hour and half hour. It lay neglected for years and the mechanical procession of pipers were idle until a couple of years ago when it was meticulously restored to it's former glory in 2020.
I've never quite timed it to see it working, only seeing it from the upper deck of a bus once, maybe one day eh!?

A little over 40 years after the Abdication Crisis that had peaked in December of 1936, Thames Television, holder of the weekday independent TV franchise for London and the Home Counties, commissioned a dramatisation based on the exhaustive Wolfson History Prize winning biography of Edward VIII by Frances Donaldson.
There was great care taken in terms of casting, production design, and location filming that included Fort Belvedere where many of the real events unfolded. Edward and Mrs Simpson seemed to be as close as you could possibly get to 1930s culture, fashion and upper-class society without a time machine. Written for television by Simon Raven and directed by pioneering British-Asian director Waris Hussein, the series was rewarded with an Emmy and multiple BAFTAs.
In retrospect, it appears to be as faithful to real events as a drama could be, including verbatim conversations and parliamentary statements. Edward VIII, formerly the Prince of Wales known as David, then finally the Duke of Windsor, was played by Edward Fox, and Wallis Simpson by Cynthia Harris. Other key castings included Nigel Hawthorne, yet to find stardom as Sir Humphrey Appleby in Yes Minister / Prime Minister, as the King’s friend and advisor Walter Monckton, David Waller as Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin (He reprised this role in 1988 for another adaptation, The Woman He Loved, starring Anthony Andrews, Jane Seymour and Olivia de Havilland), Peggy Ashcroft as Queen Mary, Marius Goring as King George V, and Wensley Pithey as a totally convincing Winston Churchill. Versatile British-Australian actor Ed Deveraux played Tory press baron Lord Beaverbrook, a role he later reprised in The Life and Times of David Lloyd George (BBC 1981).
Other notable players included Andrew Ray (Duke of York / George VI), Charles Keating (Ernest Simpson), Patrick Troughton (Clement Attlee), Patricia Hodge (Lady Diana Cooper), Maurice Denham (Cosmo Lang, Archbishop of Canterbury), Cherie Lunghi (Thelma Furness) and Hugh Fraser (Anthony Eden).
The Duke of Windsor died in 1972, but the Duchess of Windsor, formerly Mrs Simpson, was still alive when the programme was conceived and broadcast. (She died in 1986). She was not best pleased, citing invasion of privacy, and lobbied to have the production stopped. Her opposition was reported in The Sun, and perhaps might have been more newsworthy if not for another significant event in August 1977.
Tumblr media
The series ended with the marriage of the Duke and now Duchess of Windsor, some months after the Abdication.
The BFI Screen-Online review stated;
"…The series also carefully juxtaposes Edward’s frequent, and popular, visits to depressed areas with his opulent and carefree private life, and doesn’t shy from showing his admiration for Mussolini in a pair of brief but pointed exchanges with Anthony Eden…Edward Fox gives a fine and charismatic performance as the King, ably suggesting the contradictory impulses that ruled the man. Wallis Simpson, however, is presented rather less sympathetically. In an occasionally heavy-handed performance, Cynthia Harris plays her as a cool and conniving gold-digger, albeit a sometimes naïve and even disarmingly foolish one…"
The portrayal of Edward VIII was a little more sympathetic than in some later productions, including Bertie and Elizabeth (2002). Edward and Mrs Simpson did tend to gloss over the King’s fascist sympathies, although it was at least alluded to as mentioned in the BFI review. Perhaps, in fairness, these along with some alleged shady financial dealings, meddling in Britain’s foreign policy and the cosy relationship with Hitler, didn’t really become apparent until the period after the series ended. Wensley Pithey’s Winston Churchill was accurately shown as a strong and sincere personal friend and advocate for the King and Wallis Simpson, in public and private, to the annoyance of the Baldwin government, but this relationship later soured when Churchill was wartime Prime Minister, over the Duke of Windsor’s behaviour.

Another formerly healthy athlete who won an Olympic gold medal for her track and field accomplishments was found dead this week in her Winter Garden, Fla., home.
Tori Bowie died suddenly at the ripe young age of 32 for no apparent reason, which in the post-"pandemic" age could mean that Wuhan coronavirus (Covid-19) "vaccines" were involved – though this is just speculation, to be clear.
Bowie sprinted to glory in the 2016 Olympics, followed by another win at the 2019 Qatar World Championships. Between then and now, Bowie had been living a quiet life back in Florida.
According to the Orange County Sheriff's Office, Bowie was found dead in her home at 1pm after someone called to request a welfare check. Her cause of death has not been publicly announced.
The day Bowie was found dead, her sister Tamarra posted a cryptic message to Facebook that read:
"People who pretend to be happy have some of the saddest souls and people who do not try to convince the world that they are happy have the most genuine souls, because they are content with just being them for them and nobody else."
The suggestion here is that Tori suffered from mental health issues that may have contributed to her untimely death. To honor Bowie and her family, we will assume that Tamarra knows more about her sister and the possible reason why she died.
(Related: Almost immediately after Operation Warp Speed was launched by the Trump administration, serious adverse events in professional athletes who took the jabs skyrocketed by 6,000 percent.)
Bowie suffered "from day one" all throughout her life
Public records do show that Bowie defaulted on her property back in 2021 at the height of the "pandemic." The home was scheduled for foreclosure in 2022, but the auction was canceled before that could occur.
Bowie reportedly had a rocky life growing up, having been dropped off along with her sister at foster care while still an infant. Both Bowie and her sister were later adopted by their biological grandmother.
Bowie herself admitted publicly that it was "a struggle since day one," adding that her "entire life has been a struggle." She was excited to have been afforded the opportunity to succeed as an athlete, however the timing and mysterious circumstances surrounding her death seem to align with the trend of professional athletes who started dropping dead mysteriously after covid injections were unleashed.
Again, we are not saying that Bowie died because of a vaccine injury. What we are saying is that it is a strange coincidence at the very least, especially since the cause of Bowie's death has not been made public.
After winning a bronze medal at the 2015 World Championships, Bowie qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team in the 2016 Rio Olympics, where she qualified to race for Team USA in the finals of the 4x100 meter relay, as well as the 100m and the 200m.
Bowie won silver in the 100m dash, finishing with a time of 10.83 seconds just behind gold medal winner Elaine Thompson of Jamaica who clocked in at 10.71 seconds.
Bowie would eventually help Team USA retain the gold in the 4x100m relay by running as the anchor leg, outlasting Jamaica's Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.
We wish Bowie's family the best and hope that covid jabs had nothing to do with her death.

Carmen Sandiego and the search for her mom, "Vera Cruz"
Tumblr media
In episode 1, "The Luchadora Tango Caper," we learn that Carmen's mother was named "Carlotta Valdez" and lived in Veracruz with her father, Dexter Wolfe, for one year. The whole first episode is her trying to figure out who her mother was, building on what happened in Season 2, saying she doesn't even know if that is her real name and that she could be anywhere in the world. She meets Carlotta Valdez, who has changed her name to "Lupe Peligro," after breaking into her house. In the end, Lupe ends up not being her mother, but she ends up continuing her quest to find out about her identity. She also is able to fight off Coach Brunt and Devineaux. Player then informs her that there is a string of thefts near Mexico City and she decides to look into those, although she says she has to get back to the "good fight."

In the next episode, "The Day of the Dead Caper," Carm goes to Mexico City, meeting Sonia, and gets captured. However, she does honor her mother, even though she doesn't know her, during a ceremony for Dia de los Muertos, while VILE remains in pursuit. Sonia decides to steal the art back she stole, while the VILE agents get chewed out for losing Carmen and their new recruit. In the episode that follows, "The Haunted Bayou Caper," they help the Crawfish King, a celebrity chef, get back his recipe written by his ancestor after he says it is the most important link to his Creole heritage. In the fourth episode, "The Masks of Venice Caper," Shadowsan laments to Carmen that her quest to find her mother has been sidelined. She says that was her choice and she hopes to meet better people while saying that family comes in "many forms." The last episode of the season, "The Jolly Good Show Caper," does not mention her mother at all. One fan summarized the facts we know about Carmen, from the show, so far:
She is born in Buenos Aires, Argentina
She was associated with VILE since she was a baby until her 14s, and is currently 20
Her mom is "Vera Cruz," and her dad is Dexter Wolfe, formerly a member of the VILE faculty who tries to leave but ended up being killed by the Chief, then known as Tamara Fraser
There are also possibilities she may have some Russian heritage due to the fact her treasured possession, when living on VILE Island, was Russian nesting dolls. In any case, much of her parentage is shrouded in mystery. Hopefully, she concludes her quest, either finding her mother, or something else about her past in Season 4, which may be the show's last season!

Massive Attack featuring Elizabeth Fraser - “Teardrop” (1998) performed live at Abbey Road Studios
Originally, main songwriter Andrew Vowles had wanted Madonna to perform the vocals and had even gone so far as to send her a demo, but he was outvoted by band members Robert Del Naja and Grantley Marshall, who both preferred Fraser.
Fraser, who penned the song’s lyrics, found out while recording the song that Jeff Buckley—with whom she had formerly been involved in a relationship—had disappeared. It was later discovered that Buckley had tragically drowned. In 2009, she said, "[`Teardrop’ is] kind of about him—that's how it feels to me anyway.”

One in seven deepwater sharks and rays at risk of extinction - Technology Org
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/one-in-seven-deepwater-sharks-and-rays-at-risk-of-extinction-technology-org/
One in seven deepwater sharks and rays at risk of extinction - Technology Org
One in seven species of deepwater sharks and rays are threatened with extinction due to overfishing, according to a new eight-year study released today in the journal Science.
A shark – illustrative photo. Image credit: Pixabay (Free Pixabay license)
Specifically, the analysis found that sharks and rays are caught as incidental bycatch in fisheries targeting more commercially valuable species. However, they are kept due to the value of their oil and meat. This, partnered with a recent global expansion in the trade of shark liver oil, have resulted in steep population declines.
“About half of the world’s sharks are found below 200 metres, below where the sunlight reaches into the ocean,” says Nicholas Dulvy, Distinguished SFU Professor of Marine Biodiversity and Conservation.
“The first time they see sunlight is when they’re hauled onto the deck of a fishing boat.”
youtube
This new analysis by Dulvy assessed more than 500 species of sharks and rays and engaged more that 300 experts from around the world. It found that about 60 species are threatened with an elevated risk of extinction due to overfishing, according to the criteria of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species.
“As the high seas and the coastal waters are becoming depleted in many countries of the world, we’re incentivizing fishers to fish offshore and it’s become technologically viable to fish up to a kilometre deep,” Dulvy says.
Deepwater sharks and rays are among the most sensitive marine vertebrates because of their long lifespans and low reproductive rates. They have life cycles more similar to marine mammals such as whales and the walrus, which were formerly exploited for their oils and are now highly protected.
“Many deepwater sharks and rays can only withstand very small amounts of fishing pressure,” says Dulvy. “Some species may take 30 years or more to mature, and possibly up to 150 years in the case of the Greenland Shark, and only produce 12 pups throughout their entire life.”
Sharks and rays maintain their buoyancy by having a fatty liver, but this fat is highly prized. It’s used widely in cosmetics, nutrient supplements and for medicines, like vaccines. There has also been an increase in skate fisheries to support demand for fermented skate, a traditional Korean delicacy.
“There’s been great success in regulating shark fin trade. Now we need to turn our attention to regulating the international trade in liver oil.”
In addition to regulating the international trade in shark liver oil, the study also endorses a global push to protect 30 per cent of the world’s oceans by 2030. Protecting 30 per cent of the deep ocean (200 to 2,000 metres) would provide 80 per cent of species partial protection across their range. A worldwide prohibition on fishing below 800 metres would provide 30 per cent vertical refuge for a third of threatened deepwater sharks and rays.
The Global Shark Trends Project is a collaboration of the Simon Fraser University, IUCN Shark Specialist Group, James Cook University, and the Georgia Aquarium, established with support from the Shark Conservation Fund.

The agency overseeing oil and gas producers in British Columbia is warning of potential water shortages in 2024. The B.C. Energy Regulator (BCER), formerly the B.C. Oil and Gas Commission, says persistent drought last summer and fall in the northern part of the province continue to negatively affect streamflows and groundwater, with snowpack levels at last reading only 72 percent of the historical average.
The northeast of the province, where much of B.C.'s oil and gas production is concentrated, has been hit hardest by the drought. The four water basins in the region--Fort Nelson, East Peace, North Peace, and South Peace--remain at drought level 5, the most severe classification on the provincial scale. Level 5 is declared when "adverse impacts on socio-economic or ecosystem values are almost certain."
A significant portion of gas extraction in the region involves water-intensive hydraulic fracturing or fracking. The fracking process blasts water, sand, and chemicals at high pressure more than two kilometers underground to release the natural gas trapped in rock formations.
BCER hydrologist Ryan Rolick said the warning about potential water shortages was issued out of an abundance of caution, recognizing that snowpacks might still improve and that spring and summer could still deliver the precipitation desperately needed. But the opposite is also possible, he said.
In a statement, the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) said its members in British Columbia are monitoring the drought situation.
CBC science specialist Darius Mahdavi says the drought in the northeast has been at or near Level 5 since the fall of 2022.
Water permits remain indefinitely suspended on 10 rivers located in the Peace, Liard, and Fraser River watersheds, according to the BCER. Rolick said the message to the oil and gas sector is to be prepared for further water-use restrictions or suspensions.

Les Vogt and the Prowlers, Vancouver’s first Elvis-style rock band, performs at a track meet pep rally held in John Oliver Secondary’s gym in 1956. Shortly after this photo was taken, the band opened for Bill Haley and the Comets at Kerrisdale Arena – Vancouver’s first rock concert.
Unfortunately, the Prowlers did not ride the Comets’ plasma tail to success. The local heroes peaked in 1960, when Les Vogt’s song “The Blamers” knocked Elvis’ “It’s Now Or Never” from #1 on the C-FUN radio station’s Top 40 chart.
The Prowlers broke up and Les went on to become a nightclub owner (The Grooveyard, Purple Steer) and a concert promoter with Jaguar Enterprises, a company he co-founded with iconic Vancouver DJ, Red Robinson. Today, Les continues to stage concerts through his Legends of Rock and Roll series, that includes Elvis, Buddy Holly and Tina Turner tribute artists.
As for South Van and J.O. being the birthplace of Vancouver rock and roll, we shouldn’t be surprised. The entire southeast corner of the city was the epicenter for the region’s post-war baby boom. Large tracts of available land close to downtown quickly gave way to affordable housing and young families. For instance, Les grew up on the south slope, in the Fraserview neighbourhood – a sprawling government housing project comprised of 1,100 humble but functional bungalows. Each house had, in accordance with CMHC requirements, at least two kids in it, many had four to eight. Those youngsters had a lot of time to dream about rock stardom as they walked, biked or bussed to J.O. at 41st and Fraser.
Killarney Secondary opened its doors in 1957 and David Thompson the following year, thus absorbing some of the talent from the school formerly known as South Van High.

STONE - I Gotta Feeling (Official Music Video) from Maxi McLachlan on Vimeo.
Maxi (formerly Max) McLachlan directs this gross, ghoulish and drool dripping music video for Liverpudlian rock group Stone.
A quiet lunchtime pub trip descends into chaos as the patrons morph into monsters, convulsing on the floor and biting shards of glass. Evil is spewed out of these zombie-like creatures, spread as a virus from projectile, foam-filled spit. The nightmare however is brought to a halt by the pub landlady, who is clearly no stranger to violent, stumbling men. The cure to this monstrous affliction? Like in life, a simple glass of water (albeit chucked and drenched over the cast and camera).
The video acts as a commentary on toxic behaviour fuelled by lads and alcohol. Maxi stated "As we've all seen, the wrong group of lads with the wrong pints can result in a real life horror-show. I wanted to take that lad-ish behaviour and make it physically toxic, and show how this toxicity can be corrosively infectious (plus it made for a great excuse to finally make a zombie movie)."
Drawing on a love of 80s horror films, the practical effects and make-up literally come bubbling up and bursting out of the performers' skin. In particular the patient zero-zombie, as played by Hugo Hamlet, twists and turns in violent fashion as he is possessed. This is made all the more visceral by the saturated, gritty aesthetic capture on 16mm by DP Owain Morgan.
The whole video is accompanied by a Mike Skinner like to-camera performance from Fin Power, the front man of the band, regaling his first-hand experiences with toxic masculinity.
