If you haven't heard of them, you should know that Pfriem's series of sours are absolute 🔥⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ They don't distribute to Northern California, so I was super excited to find this in one of my shipments from @tavour. I drank this Forked River Flanders Red directly after having a bottle of Rodenbach Grand Cru, which is not only a benchmark version of the style, but is also one of my favourite beers of all time. And I won’t lie – the Rodenbach was the better of the two. But that said, Forked River’s version holds its own, even when tried back-to-back with an undisputed classic of its style. It shows some impressive complexity, especially as it warms up, with a good balance to the barrel aging, great sour cherry and tart plum flavours, and none of the harsh balsamic vinegar notes that often mar lesser attempts. This is a blend of two beers. One aged in oak barrels for 24 months to build up a nice acidic sourness and a fresh beer to add sweetness and balance. This is one of the less acidic Flanders ales I've had. I like it, as it is very fruit forward, with lots of fresh cherry flavor. The aroma is a little bit like a nice balsamic vinegar. I really, really enjoyed drinking this and I need to find more soon. Charlie shining a flashlight inside our barrel of Flanders Red sour ale. That's pellicle growing on the top of the beer, a colony of microbes huddling together at the liquid-air interface. There is some debate about the purpose of the pellicle, but the leading hypothesis points toward "oxidative metabolism", which allows the beer to access the little oxygen present in the atmosphere of the fermenter. There is no debate, however, that from this barrel will come a delicious pint of Flanders Red. This is arguably the best beer I've ever had, and definitely the best sour. Poured from a 2016 750mL, part of Rodenbach's Limited Edition Sour Series. Look: Pours a deep, translucent crimson; no lacing; about an inch of slightly red-hued white foam. Smell: Bitter, strong notes of cherry; mild, lingering oak notes. Taste: Very balanced tartness initially, various fruit notes dominated by sour cherry, with a fantastic almond nuttiness in the finish (I'd imagine from the cherry pits) Feel: Seltzery carbonation as would be expected of the style, quickly dissipating and replaced with a wonderful tartness. Overall: What else is there to say? A truly unique experience, and even for those who aren't a fan of sour beer styles, this is truly a treat if you can get a hold of it.
