Star Trek Janeway - Chapter 4

Charlotte's assignment had started well, she had proved herself to be an excellent problem solver and a steady hand in an emergency. Making friends had been harder, anytime he had a note of praise from her commanding officers she felt the judgement of her fellow junior officers. Nepotism, they whispered, her mother is a celebrated hero and she gets everything handed to her on a platter. Don't criticise the Captain unless you want to be on the graveyard shift for the whole mission. Charlotte was pulled from her thoughts by an incoming call on her intercom. She answered and was met with her mother's face, grave and solemn. "Lottie sweetheart, I'm so glad you're back in comms range before it becomes common knowledge. I don't want you to worry, I'm sure it's fine, it's just ... Amal, he was somehow a student watcher on some sort of deep space mission and his ship is.. seems to be... uncontactable" her mother's voice betraying her with a quaver. "Please, I'm sure there's an explanation, but you need to know". Charlotte was silent, she knew being in Starfleet generated some level of risk but it didn't feel real. She tried to breathe but couldn't suck any air into her lungs. She slammed her computer shut, and dropped her head in her hands.

Admiral T'Pira was filling some old reports when Kathryn burst into her office "they won't tell me! Deep space research mission my ass, every time I try and find out what he was doing on that ship, a brick wall comes down, what aren't they telling me?". T'Pira blinked slowly, her concern for Amal was growing too, she had made her own private investigations but leanred little more than Kathryn. "Kathryn, it is indeed a great worry, although you know Starfleet exploration is not a job without peril, I know you will do everything in your power to bring him home" , T'Pira offered her, "i am sorry, I wish I could offer something of a more practical nature".

Chakotay sat in front of the Board "this is getting buried, I don't know why but nobody is looking for The Essex. I want you to grant me permission to take a ship, any ship and look for it"

A small Bajoran man leaned forwards "Captain, search and rescue has been deployed, this is too personal for you. You and Admiral Janeway need to go home and let us do our jobs"

In his office Chakotay threw his chair against the wall, throwing all the padds from his desk on the floor. "Chakotay" the voice that never failed to stop him in his tracks, they drew together in a fierce embrace "screw them Chalotay, we will find our son, and I think I know exactly who can help us".
