Dragondance: An Altered Course 9: It is not down in any map; true places never are: On AO3
Summary: The incarnations of the primordial spirits that created the world chose as their Light Warriors the following: an aimless vagabond, an amnesiac old man, a pretty princess with more courage than sense, and a foundling pirate. The world is doomed.
Chapter summary: The search begins for the Earth Crystal. Problem is, no one knows where to go.
WARNING: This fic has Faris/Lenna in a romantic relationship. Also warning: As I played this game before there was an official translation, and as I find that the GBA version injects jokes where there weren’t any, I use my own translations. This fic reflects that. This fic also reflects information garnered from Japanese FFV guidebooks and cards.

Didn't want to hijack this post here by talking about something maybe 3 people are interested in, so I decided to make it separate:
Fun fact on this ficverse wherein I overthink the worldbuilding and add to it with a lifetime of archaeological upbringing and two degrees in human studies (geography and anthropology): The characters speak a lingua franca, vulgate Lonkan, because the Lonkan Empire spanned a huge amount of space (conservative guessing: Gohn to Jacole to Crescent Island) and was the most advanced civilization at the time. Model: Koine ("common") Greek became a lingua franca because of Alexander the Great's campaign of expansion. Do they remember that it's Lonkan? No, not really; Lonka fell a few centuries before the present and by present the language became known as the trade language.
Galuf took to Lonkan well 30 years back because Lonkan and Surgatese had the same roots, and there had been concentrated efforts to keep both languages pure. Plus, he had about 30 years to perfect his mastery of it by game start, because some part of him knew he'd have to go back.
Anyway, here's a thing I made up about a year ago for my worldbuilding project.

Wondering if anyone is ever going to fully appreciate the levels of deep nerdery here.
Explanation:
Cara is Krile's localization name in the RPGe fan translation of FF5.
Knowing that Kururu may come from Sanskrit led me to Jaya, meaning "victorious"--the feminine form of the word seems to be an epithet for the goddess Durga. Kurul is a romanization for Kururu's name from the Master Guide, which is the only place where that particular version appears.
Trying to find a source for Galuf's name proved difficult, but a search on Japanese wiki led me to the Garraf massif in Spain. But also the katakana reminded me of Galf, a character in Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen (and it turned out as incorrect there, as it's actually ガルフ※). Thinking about Galf as an option brought me to Galfrid, which is of Anglo-Norman extract, so I went with that for Galuf's brothers.
But also, Galaf seems to be a Spanish form of Halif/حَالِف... In which case, that does get interesting because of Moorish influences in Spain lending themselves to geography. So hey, that's cool (ᐛ)ᕗ. Not sure yet if I want to go this route and rename the brothers, though, as it'd involve digging deep into geographic features and trying to figure out which is Moorish and which derives from some pre-Roman indigenous language.
※ As an aside, that entry gives me a great idea for a later thing.

Looking at the end of W1 for An Altered Course. An Inscrutable Malice and Light are just world 2 and the merged world for my own organizing, and likely won't be posted separately.

Fic stuff
Cut because maybe 3 people care.
I've been writing a lot more than I have in a while. Chapter 10 is done and I'm about 3000 words into Chapter 11. If momentum keeps going, I'm hoping I'll be done with the game novelization part done by the end of the year and can move on to exploring the fallout of smashing worlds together that had been separate for 1000 years + complications of maintaining a long-term taboo relationship in one place where there's not a lot of privacy.
I'm thinking of spacing out chapter releases instead of dumping them all at once.
Marginally related and kinda selfish thought: I really wish other people would write/draw F/L without me pushing them to. It would just be nice not to be the only one on this boat for longer than a day or so. I miss being able to flail happily about my ship and not get frowned at and vagueposted about by fandom thought police who can't just scroll past and/or block.

Need to do proper translation later, but for now: fire-powered ship info from Basic Knowledge guidebook, useful points:
Paddle steamer with a built-in semipermanent engine (??? I don't understand this part. Japanese wiki tells me that the 永久機関 combo means perpetual motion machine, so possibly half that?)
Gigantic hull, cannot enter shallow waters. Torna Canal right out, says so in the book.
Open sea and Inland Seas connected by only a few rivers
Paddle rings linked to turbine that rotates due to energy reactor, possibly that semi-perpetual motion engine. Travels at speeds up to 84 knots per hour, or 97 miles per hour.
Crystal-pressurized water above 350 degrees Celcius, so the chimney interior is highly resistant to flames
Engine constantly running, estimated to contain internal temperatures of over 9000* C
Thermal energy piped from Crystal and sealed in the furnace, which combined with a semi-perpetual motion engine probably explains why it's still running after the Fire Crystal shatters.
In-game fireship is the prototype, but it was decided that it would eventually be mass produced as the next main cruiser of the Karnak army. (Again, who the hell was Queen Karnak thinking of attacking? Is this ExDeath's doing? How long has he been at influencing her? Because building a ship like this would take years.)

Game novelization problems:
Goddamn Mid's "Cid-ojiichan is my ojiichan :)" and real familiar use of oniichantachi for people he just met is kind of annoying. Krile does it too, but I always kinda figured that she's been a bit sheltered and plays up the kid angle because that's what Galuf expects of her. By the time she uses "oniichantachi" for Butz&co, it's well after she's interacted with them for a bit (first instance: oneesan for Lenna when she's busy poisoning herself for a dragon, second is "oneechantachi" when talking about Faris and Lenna to Butz when they leave in the merged world--there's a familiarity shift from -san to -chan over time). And I'm just not sure how to romanize this usage because English doesn't really have that.
As an aside, I figure she sheds it when she's an adult. Makes things a bit less weird for when I ship her with Butz in her late 20s. And Mid just having no manners and being way more focused on his reading than anything else plays well into that aborted thing I have for them in the side story.
I don't know if I really want to translate all the lines and write out all the side-quests and things. I know that's the done thing for novelizations, but my main focus is Faris/Lenna and I want to move on to the juicier stuff.

Fanfic stuff. Don’t ask.
This is an extremely simple breakdown and doesn’t encompass loanwords, linguistic drift, syntax changes, whether something was adopted as a lingua franca and other minor languages not listed here fell to glottophagy, and so on.
PS: Mirage considered part of Nazalea island chain.

I haven't had time to draw in a long time. I still don't, but I needed something else to do while listening to teleconferences. Faris and Lenna, for my big farilenna novel, 15 years later.

Hey, so I have all these secondary publications for Final Fantasy V and, being a massive nerd for the wealth of human cultures and how they're shaped by interactions with other peoples, environments, and disasters, the extra lore sets my imagination alight. This post is, therefore, a lot of wild speculation based on 1) data in the secondary publications that are only glossed over in the game, if not missing entirely; 2) both informal and formal education in human studies (history, anthropology, geography, etc), and growing up as a child of an archaeologist. So... wild speculation and primarily written to encompass my fanfics, but using the real world to inform it.
While it's only a small fragment of my ideas, it's still a lot. I'm sure no one will read it, but thank you to those who do. Content warning for people being people and not pure icons of virtue applies.

UbeQuill just got in touch with me recently to share their url change and suggest I fix my links. So, here, I'm resharing again because I love their work. These are a couple of several music pieces I commissioned/plan to commission from them for my FFV fic, An Altered Course/the rest of Dragondance once I get around to those parts.
UbeQuill · Dragondance Mvt. 1 - Starcrossed Waltz
Movement 1 covers the first few chapters, leading to the Tycoon balcony scene.
UbeQuill · Starcrossed Waltz (Music Box Version)
This is actually for a fic set between the postgame part and the leading-to-LotC part. It's utterly indulgent and I kinda want to share, but it contains future spoilers.
Anyway, just wanted to share again! Also, art by the absolutely fantasic artist and long-time friend Polymethodic.

Dragondance: An Altered Course 7: A storm for every calm: On AO3 // ff.net. Augh! The site I was using for the Japanese text for FFV went down! There are webarchive snapshot, at least. So, for my own reference:
Index
W1: Opening to the Wind Shrine
W1: Torna Canal to Tycoon scene 1
W1: Walse Castle to the desert
W1: Gohn to World 2
W1: Lix and Tycoon side bits
W2: Galuf to that whole sky dragon scene
W2: Ghido to ExDeath’s Castle
W3: Tycoon to world collapse
W3: Kuza Castle to final boss
Ending (first half)
Ending if one of the characters dies. This looks like code is broken somewhere.
GBA-specific text
Kinda tempted to ask a favor of that guy who ripped the WS games to see if he’s willing to rip the text out of the Japanese version of FFV.

Translating for fic and...
[prison] [Cid blows wall] Cid: I give up. Gang: ?! Cid: Used the last of the blasting powder just to end up in another cell...? tohohoho... [actually translates to "boo hoo hoo", oh my god. up to this point he uses a lot of "の"s, which just sounds kinda whiny and self-recriminating] [Cid starts heading back to his cell] Cid: You! You just laughed! [party shakes heads] Cid: It's fine. I'm Cid. Lenna: Eeh! Cid? The one who made the Crystal power amplification devices? [all formality gone, she's just being a kind of plainspoken and sharp that isn't "like her", but at this point I honestly expect any Japanese players to be used to her dropping formality like this by now and it’s a major disappointment that her speech patterns just don’t translate that well to English] [Cid's gaze drops] Cid: ... Lenna: I'm sorry Cid: no, that's fine. It's all my fault, after all...
I really gotta write a defense of Lenna at some point.

Meme. Filling out for FFV, Faris/Lenna specifically, because I don’t get asks anymore that aren’t about a fandom I left back in 2016. Or at all ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. This is pretty much entirely for the post-game part of Dragondance. So, there will be spoilers for the maybe 2 people here reading it, and that’s behind the cut.
Note: Dragondance is split in 3: game novelization, 5 years after the game, and 15 years after the game. Krile finds sky dragon eggs during part 2 and gives them to Faris and Lenna, and these dragons grow up to become a mating pair. Part 3 has a small side bit of Lenna just deciding she wants kids.
☾ - sleep headcanon - Alone, Faris will roll over a dozen times before finally settling down to sleep in the same position she always does. She won’t if someone’s in bed with her. Lenna loves snuggling and will always curl up with Faris.
★ - sad headcanon - Lenna, being 4 years old at the time, never actually formed coherent memories about Sarisa that she can recall consciously. What she does remember is being compared to the ideals people around her had of Sarisa and resenting it. By the time she was 12 and lost her mother, she’d forgotten completely that she’d had a sister until the game happens and she discovers that Faris has the same pendant as her.
☆ - happy headcanon - Every now and then, Lenna and Faris spar to keep up their sword skills and it almost always devolves into tickles and rolling around on the grass being adorable.
☠ - angry/violent headcanon - Being a pirate and familiar with the dark underbelly of humanity, Faris has well-informed fantasies of violence against people who really get under her skin. She just never actually acts on them.
✿ - Sex headcanon - Lenna genuinely tries to keep quiet when she has sex in her own bed because she keeps that aspect of her relationship with Faris secret, but this only results in the cutest little squeaks. Faris is not verbal during sex at all.
■ -  Bedroom/house/living quarters headcanon - Faris got Lenna’s old apartment after the events of the game and never really got around to decorating it. As a result, it’s a bit spartan. Lenna changed her father’s apartment a bit when she moved in, but ultimately just brought her things with her and gave Faris their father’s things. The ancestral home in the island of Telos is where they really have a place set up exactly to their tastes.
♡ - romantic headcanon - Faris adores Lenna and will do everything possible to keep her happy and feeling loved. This often results in little gestures that can be dismissed by outsiders as just sisterly affection, and sometimes in grand gestures that are harder to explain away. Lenna soaks all of it up. Because Lenna knows that Faris grew up touch-starved, her gestures are subtler and mostly involve cuddles and gentle touches.
♥ - family headcanon - Ahaha. Well. They have an extensive family, largely due to a Queen of Karnak a few hundred years back deciding to marry off her kids to everyone with a crown as a way to unite the free states and kingdoms against the Lonkan Empire. Only a few of their family actually know about their relationship: the current Queen Polymja of Karnak and a cousin they hired to help care for the dragons.
☮ - friendship headcanon - Butz has been a great help to both of them while they were still working through the early stages of their relationship. Years after, Faris and Butz get around to best friends status, while Lenna has Krile to talk to about matters that Faris never quite gets.
♦ - quirks/hobbies headcanon - Because she grew up with pirates and learned the sailor’s arts and crafts, Faris prefers to spend her idle time carving something up. The family retreat on Telos has a lot of scrimshaw and wood carvings as a result. Lenna reads, though she keeps the naughtier books at Telos.
☯ - likes/dislikes headcanon - Lenna is completely senseless about dragons. Sky dragons specifically, but she’s just as happy to befriend any other sort. She does not enjoy embroidery, but will cut and sew her own clothes if she has to. Faris hates politics, but she’s better at it than she wants to admit.
▼ - childhood headcanon - Lenna was a tomboy as a child and her hair was much shorter than it is in canon. She was urged to grow it out and “grow up” after her mother died, which was something she still resents. Faris spent her shore leave as a child learning to steal.
∇ -. old age/aging headcanon - Faris dies fairly young at roughly late middle age, because she had a hard life and it took its toll on her. Lenna steps down as queen shortly afterwards, leaving Tycoon to her twin daughters and the parliament for retreat to Telos with her dragons. When Lenna does finally pass, it’s at the age of 105 and with the knowledge that the love between her and Faris brought the sky dragons back from extinction--their dragons would not have been so fertile and productive if Lenna hadn’t been in love with Faris.
♒ - cooking/food headcanon - Lenna can’t actually cook, she doesn’t have the patience. Mostly Lenna leans vegetarian, unless the meat in the meal is something she hunted herself--this is because at least then she knows the animal didn’t die in pain. Faris can cook and isn’t bad at it, but she doesn’t care at all about presentation/plating and only makes an effort if she’s cooking for Lenna.
☼ - appearance headcanon - Faris is always going to be a crossdresser, even long after the entire world knows she’s a woman. Her clothes are just a lot fancier as unofficial king of Tycoon. Lenna likes to dress more modestly for court, and in revealing things and lingerie for Faris.
ൠ - random headcanon - Lenna, in a fit of impulsiveness, went one day to the Fire Crystal and just asked for kids. Daughters, if you please. She certainly wasn’t going to have them the usual way. The twins are just slightly genetically-remixed clones.
◉ - Any other question of your choosing - Sometimes Faris will dye her hair, dress like a Walse dandy, and sneak into masquerades just for the chance to dance with Lenna in public. No one else ever catches on.
