Meet the ICON10 Board Q&A: Adam McCauley, Advocacy Chair

Adam McCauley is a San Francisco based illustrator, artist and musician who has been creating illustrations nationally and worldwide since 1988 for editorial, publishing, institutional and advertising based clients. He's also an Associate Professor in Illustration at California College of the Arts. Tell us a bit about your position on the ICON10 Board. What is your role?

I'm in the role of Advocacy Chair. At ICON, Advocacy centers on business and ethical issues within our industry. In this rapidly changing media environment, this has been a challenging and vital task.

ICON10 is headed to Detroit! What should attendees look forward to in the Motor City?

Inspiration; the energy and art scene there is electric. And, Coney Dogs.

Why is it important for the illustration community to convene in person at ICON?

This is one of the few moments in a given year where the immensely diverse population which makes up our field come together under one proverbial roof to meet, greet, learn, laugh and get fired up in taking our industry in the direction it needs to go.

Any highlights from past ICONs you'd like to share?

Going for a run in 95 degrees Pasadena with Tim O'Brien, Hanoch Piven and Fernanda Cohen. Tim left us in the dust, but in the end we were able to arrive back at the hotel and jump in the swimming pool, which was over-run by illustrators.

What are you working on right now?

Various editorial and book project ideas. And fixing the plaster cracks in our house in the Mission.

Tell us a bit about your workspace. What kind of setup / space do you use?

I work out of one our upstairs bedrooms. It's a pretty straightforward set up; Mayline drafting table, Aeron drafting stool and an iMac set-up. And a dog bed where our pooch Ella Pepita sleeps and chews on stuff. If I am working on larger paintings, I set up studio down in our garage.

What inspires you?

To quote Milton Glaser, "The real issue is not talent as an independent element, but talent in relationship to will, desire and persistence." Just do the work and get better in doing so.

Any creative tools you can't live without?

Foolishly, I recently upgraded to High Sierra mid deadline and it immediately killed my Wacom due to incompatible driver. I had to draw with my mouse like the old days until the new tablet arrived.

Do you find the time to work on self-initiated / personal projects?

Like most of us, I have to. I'm behind on a number of my own ideas, but I tend to follow the coordinates that my creative weather vane directs me towards and trust that's where I need to go.

What are your hobbies and interests outside of illustration?

I'm a drummer, so I play in a couple of different bands. I also drum for recording projects for people from time to time.

What has been the best part of being part of the ICON10 Board?

The people. They're all super cool, friendly, smart and of course extremely talented. I feel very fortunate and honored to be part of it all.

1. Coldplay: how can something so banal be so powerful?

This article talks about how as a whole band they have a gift for melody and a knack of evoking emotions that allow them to produce songs that are almost irresistible for their fans. They also mention how every time they think of a new song they try to capture something fundamental to contemporary living that they know would cause a connection between them, the song and the audience. With this they makes us see that in every song there is something more than just the moldy and the lyrics combined, there is history and a lesson that has to be discovered by finding the true meaning of the whole song. This article allows you to think of that hidden meaning in the songs they have produced, which in this case is Viva la Vida. It is very important not just to focus on the song in order to find that, but also what was going on with the band at that time.

2. 'We're about to be fed to the lions'

His band was going through different things, touring all over the world, and that is why they decided to call one of the songs Viva la Vida, even when they Album is called Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends. They also mention how Coldplay is a band known for their simplistic love songs but with this new album they have pushed it more as Martin sings of death, salvation and defiance. They wanted to cause an impact and for people to listen the songs and feel warm and embracing; to connect. They wanted the audience to perceive each song differently, some would listen the song and find it miserable, but others would find it different. The band wanted to let them think for their own, as they said “ If you find it depressing you can call it Death and All His Friends. And if you find it uplifting, Viva La Vida. “

Also it has many parts of an interview where they ask Martin, the singer about those lines. In this website I was able to understand more the lyrics and the whole album from which this song is. This album tries to make the public remember what is important in life rather than be carried away by the trappings of other things. By reading this information you can also find important messages that the artists says as it provides parts of an interview where he opened about the song "I think everything we're trying to do at the moment is about not starting again so much as breaking down what we've built up before and trying to build something different and hopefully better, or worse in a good way. And this song is one of our favorites, because none of us are doing anything on it that we've ever done before. But we really enjoy playing it. The longer you go on as a band, the harder it is to surprise yourself."
