Descriptions of the height and appearance of Philip ii
Description by John the Elder
...good-looking face, with a wide forehead and gray eyes, a straight nose and a man-like set. From the forehead to the tip of the chin his face becomes small; his way of walking is worthy of a prince, and his bearing so straight that he does not lose an inch of height; with a yellow head and beard. and so, to conclude, he is so well proportioned of body, arm and leg, and the same all other members, that nature cannot make a more perfect model.
Description in 1577
... of mediocre height, but very well proportioned; his blond hair begins to whiten; his face is beautiful and pleasant; his humor is melancholic (...) He takes care of matters without rest and in it he takes an extreme job because he wants to know everything and see everything. He gets up very early and works or writes until noon. Eat then, always at the same time and almost always of the same quality and the same amount of dishes. He drinks in a mediocre-sized glass and emptys it two and a half times. (...) He sometimes suffers from stomach weakness, but little or no gout. About half an hour after the meal, send all the documents on which you must put your signature. Once this is done, three or four times a week he goes in a float to the field to hunt the deer or the rabbit with a crossbow.
Translation from Felipe II: El hombre, el rey, el mito by Enrique Martínez Ruiz.

Elizabeth apparently told Gomez Suarez de Figueroa, Count of Feria, and one of Philip’s leading councillors, that she was aware “that when she was in prison, your majesty [Philip] had shown her favour and helped to obtain her release.” At the same meeting, Feria told Elizabeth that it was Philip who “who had procured her recent recognition as the queen’s sister and successor, and not the queen or the council, and that this was something your majesty had been trying to secure for some time.”

i like (i don’t, but i think it’s funny) the idea of 16th century men just hanging out out in armor all the time like casually. say, maybe even when watching a chess competition?
