 “You wanted me to walk in on you.” Matt Jackson said smugly following you down the hallway.  Just moments ago Matt had accidentally walked in on you while you were changing, having forgotten to lock the door to the dressing room.  Being a small arena, there was only a small changing area and it was late, the show long since over so you really weren’t thinking about people being around.  You had known Matt was here, but he had been in the ring with his brother when you went to change.  When Matt had walked in on you wearing nothing but a crop top and thong he had taken his time looking over you prompting you to scream at him to get the hell out.

“Not the only thing that gets bigger on me sweetheart.”  He said popping his gum as you flipped him the middle finger.  

“Oh, grow up!”  You rolled your eyes, keeping your face forward so he couldn’t see the smile tugging on the corner of your lips.  He didn’t need any encouragement.  Okay, so maybe you thought he was just a little bit cute.  That didn’t mean you should let him off the hook for walking in on you, especially since he didn’t seem the slightest bit repentant.  

You pushed through the double doors leading to the parking lot, shivering a bit as the cool night air blew on your bare legs.   As you put your car key in your door you noticed you still had your tag-a-long.  Opening the door you tossed your purse on the seat before turning to face Matt.  

“What can I do for you Matt?”  You asked, exhibiting patience you didn’t necessarily feel.  

“That’s a nice car.”   He commented, not responding to your query.  “Is it broken in yet?”  

“Broken in?  What do you mean?”  You were completely confused.  “It’s five years old, it should be broken in by now right?”  Was there something you were supposed to do to break the car in? You thought, frowning as you noticed Matt laughing at you.

“God, your so naïve,” He chuckled.  “It almost makes me feel bad for all the things I want to do to you.”  

A light bulb went off as you heard his comment. “Broken in…you mean sex? No I haven’t had sex in my car.” You said vehemently.

“Do you want to?”  He asked raising his eyebrows suggestively as he stepped closer to you, making you retreat until your back hit the side of your car, finding yourself pinned between him and the cold metal.  You found yourself speechless, unable to form a coherent reply.  All you could think was how good he felt pressed up to you and how long it had been since you had been with a man.

@wanderinghedgehog, I'm so sorry, I wanted to put this under this post of yours, but tumblr keeps eating it. Hey!! You are right!! I really loved your analysis, and I really hope it's not too unwelcome of me to expand on this myself, as it's something I quietly think about almost every day during my meditations on Javert's character, and don't have a lot of occasion to speak about! I feel as though the best, most overlooked part of Javert's character is this exact thing; His fall is set up in his introductory chapter. Javert is born to a wolf-- He domesticates himself using society and virtue as his sword, wielding it against the parts of himself that he hates-- Only to revert back into a wild, snarling animal when faced with Valjean. His own personal sense of duty and professional boundaries are ALWAYS being blasted specifically by the presence of Jean Valjean (no matter if that presence is real or imagined). It's not just in Javert Derailed, either!

In The Descent, it is present in the fact that he went against Madeleine's orders, which were to immediately free Fantine without punishing her. before those orders, he is a mere hunting dog, truly! He's not the one doing the killing of Fantine, that's the job of a prison. He's merely the one facilitating her death. As we see in the beginning of the scene, Javert is cold and unfeeling in the carrying out of his duty, but he experiences "the most violent emotions he had ever felt in his life" as soon as Madeleine enters the room and speaks on her behalf. Hugo points out that Javert going against a superior was here before an unthinkable action, but his extreme emotions about "What the mayor could be" in that moment blasted that wall away. Madeleine easily destroys something that was once an ingrained part of Javert-- Javert himself says it is the first time in his life that he would do such a thing, and that he was despairing to do it. Later, furious at being humiliated by the man he knows to be Valjean, he writes his letter of denunciation. In Javert, the book named after him (which I also think is significant, considering the books named after characters seem to be highlighting a character's most painful moment, moments at the cost of themselves, ala Eponine), he admits to Madeleine that he had denounced him as a convict out of what he himself initially thinks is a valid complaint, but is then (mistakenly) lead to believe that his fury was just out of personal beef towards a man that apparently had nothing to do with any of this besides Madeleine looking like him, simply resembling Valjean, and that he was not only willing, but demanding needily to destroy his own societal standing, his own career, his own life to make himself virtuous again, able to live with himself again. This is something that I go over so many times-- The Javert chapter is basically just a beta version of Derailed-- That off-screen "Earthquake" Javert goes through must have been so very similar to what he felt in Derailed. He is being forced to face his own abhorrent "mistakes", going against what he had been trained-- and for what? Valjean. The mere bothersome memory of Valjean had eaten away at his "virtue", and so, in a word, Javert must be erased to become "himself" again. In Aftershock, Javert is literally turned into a horrible demon because of his emotions towards Valjean. No longer the stoical and calm man that he was set up as, he turns into a sloppily-dressed animal, slurring his speech, barking out words, grinning and laughing like a madman, so filled with self-satisfaction over being right about Valjean and moreover catching Valjean that Fantine dies of fright. What are your thoughts on long-haired Javert? Do you prefer a more historically/book-accurate version?

I strongly dislike ponytail Javert...! ...Though I know saying that may come off as me being a party-pooper of sorts. I genuinely understand why people like it! It's a very attractive look...! I liked it too, initially coming from the musical (Phillip Quast i would die for you, etc)!... But it's not him. I understand that the musical is, in a way, a different sort of type of canon, even if it is an adaptation at the end of the day... and in the musical, that version of Javert has a very specific look that tends to be pretty consistent in all the casting, costuming, and in general appearance (hair, fashion, etc) but... Mm. I won't turn this into a rant about how I feel about the musical, I promise, lol The fandom can do whatever it wants, and I'm always happy to see fanart of any kind, and I hope this doesn't come off as me applying any of this to fanworks at all-- But... tbh, There are a lot of little things about Javert's appearance that just sort of get lost in translation (metaphorically and literally), and I've learned to get used to it, but I can't deny that when I open a new illustrated copy or put in a film adaptation I haven't seen, I get a little disappointed when the Javert doesn't actually look like Javert. The main characters are described so vividly detailed in the book, and I feel it's a shame when all that's discarded, especially for the sake of the characters looking conventionally attractive. To answer your question, I vastly, vastly prefer how he appears in the actual canon-- for various reasons, not just historical accuracy, though that is a big part of it for me. I just... love weird-looking-yet-awe-inspiring-and-scary Javert! I think his, uh, bowlcut is sort of charming... in a way... and shows a lot about his character-- Like how his bangs are so long that they practically fall into his eyes, which is another one of his many 'concealers'... but he keeps the rest of it very neat and tidy and "cropped short", which is another of his many dog metaphors. Cropped ears/tail on a mastiff, etc etc.

2. Favorite canon thing about this character?

I like everything about him tho 🥺 I answered a lot of why I like him so much in a prior ask, but another thing I love about him is his sense of humor, strange as it is to say. Voulez-vous mon chapeau?, Party's at 7?, I have the claws of a woman!, etc etc. He seems to me to be that sort of person who's so dry and stern, so when he hits you with his brand of sarcasm, it catches you off-guard. Hugo says that he never allows for a moment's fun, but I feel as if he does get a lot of enjoyment, a lot of enrichment from putting criminals like Patron-Minette away, and his sense of humor in those moments really does charm me. 3. Least favorite canon thing about this character?

I don't like that he's such a hardcore monarchist, but I genuinely understand how a man like him with his sort of upbringing (and worldview shaped by said upbringing) would fall into that sort of political leaning… conservatism is based on fear, Javert is described as "despairing" over society, and Big Authoritative Country Ruler Monarchist makes the bad thing go away…! "Power is power"… etc etc. That being said, I do genuinely think that all the characters having their own political stances is really interesting to dive into. One of the things I have planned to go over for my Javert meta is a deep dive into the politics associated with Javert, so I've been reading a lot of Joseph de Maistre. Please. What's a headcanon you have for this character?

For Javert - I have so many!! So many. But I'll give you a relatively banal one-- His tastes, in the literal sense of the word. I think his snuff habit has fried his tastebuds, so he likes really bitter things. Black breads, really dry wines and such. He's not a habitual coffee drinker, as he has no other vices than snuff, but if there was a communal pot heating on top of the stove at the station on the Pointoise, or if someone above his rank offered it to him and he couldn't refuse without coming off as impolite, he would like it black and boiling hot… and he would drink it nearly in one go, without flinching. Not one to savor things. Too busy devouring, as it were. He would also enjoy bloody red meat, but it's definitely not a frequent thing for him… a bit too rich for his blood, especially during the MsurM saga. And in Paris, he spends all his saved up money on clothes rather than food.

The one I use as my icon and blog sidebar, this drawing of the chapter "The Idleness of Monsieur Bamatabois" by Jeanniot. I think the arist, here and in his other drawings of Javert, really captures him in a way that aligns the most with the Javert in my head.

What's a headcanon you have for this character?

For Marius - Ohhhh I don't have too many for Marius off the top of my head, but alas the one that does come to mind is of character sexualities-- Forgive me! I know they can be contentious. Whenever the occasion arises, I do write Marius as… Ignorantly bisexual. That sort of bisexual where you're in the closet due to simply not having the knowledge. Marius seems to me to fall in love (more or less!) with tons of male characters just by sight or within a couple of moments of talking to them… His fast friendship with Courfeyrac (which I love so much and is so underrated!), his admiration of "Monsieur Leblanc" (who he found very much to his liking and finds his white hair incredibly beautiful), his awe of Javert (but weh he was impolite to me weh he wouldnt call me monsieur weh [said with much affection for marius just making fun of him ofc]), his sweetness towards Mabeuf, his huge hardon for Napoleon … And, until he saw Cosette in bloom, the fact that he doesn't seem to pay attention to women at all other than to pity them, despite all his friends desperately trying to get him laid. This is by no means me trying to say that this is the only way to interpret the character, but it's always been funny to me to think of when I read his chapters. 2. Favorite canon thing about this character?

I love that even after her death, she lingers on in the story as a always-present but rarely-ever-seen ghost, especially in Cosette and Valjean's life. It's very haunting and very touch, in a way. Hugo has really good writing when it comes to death and rebirth, and Fantine's story does exemplify that.

3. Least favorite canon thing about this character?

I mean, I feel the natural answer to this is what happens to her. It's tragic to watch happen, to see her sink into poverty when she's trying to make a better life for herself, and how badly the Thenardiers milk her for all she has. It's deeply sad to think of how badly fate has thrown her around and takes advantage of her not knowing any better. She makes a lot of mistakes, as Hugo himself points out, but. Still. It's not fun to watch her metaphorically fall down the stairs and hit every step along the way.

7. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you like?

I do genuinely think the fandom handles her prostitution with a lot of respect for her and I appreciate it. It's very clearly something she doesn't like doing, (and given her own choice wouldn't do it at all), and the fandom seems universally careful about it. However…

8. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you despise?

Again, despise is a really strong word. It's less so much what I despise and what I personally find I don't agree with in terms of character analysis. Everyone's going to have their own view of a certain character and I can't despise that, especially not of my fellows who love the same book as me.

With that out of the way, I do have to say that I don't like that the fandom erases Fantine's sassy side, her snark. I think a lot of people associate it with her prostitution and therefore try to avoid it, at the cost of a big chunk of her characterization. Without her sort of blind and trusting spunk, I feel like she gets reduced to a generic "mother" character a lot, which I feel is a disservice to her. This is also a consequence of the musical smoothing down everyone's characters, but that's another conversation entirely…

Hi! Hope its ok to ask, and sorry if its already been answered before: Do you have fav Les Mis adaption? Or a few?

Thank you for asking me!! I've not watched all of them, considering how many there are floating around out there and how many are sadly lost, but. I have spent this year hunting down and watching every adaptation I could. A special thanks to @ueinra for a lot of help in that regard. I recently made a Letterboxd account and a List just for Les Mis. I've plans to go through and review them properly, (Currently I only have Shoujo Cosette reviewed!) but I'd be happy to try to coalesce my thoughts on my absolute favorite for you, that being the four-part silent* Les Miserables (1925) under this read-more! Hiyah!

It's... Hard to grasp my feelings on LM1925, considering how special it is to me. These films really made me love the idea of cinema again. I had never seen a silent movie before, and frankly I thought they were one of those things that were a bit out of reach for me, but wow I am so so happy I watched LM1925. Not only is it a fantastic adaptation of LM, it's also just a fantastic set of movies (miniseries??) in general. The casting, the acting, the sets, the locations, the attention to detail, the quality of the visuals (which often are just frankly stunningly beautiful), the pacing, the atmosphere. Everything just works and is faithful to the feeling of reading the novel. (I will say I watched it without the accompany music at first, but have since gone back and listened to it overtop on a rewatch, and wow what a cool oddity it is. The Sims 1 soundtrack but with a surreal and often nightmarish twist.) I adore Gabriel Gabrio as Valjean. He really captures the idea that Valjean can both be noble, kind, and fearsome all in one. And Jean Toulout as scrunkly and lively Javert...!! I truly love him. I think them and Sandra Milovanoff as Fantine (less so as her playing Cosette, too, wish they would have cast another person) give absolutely amazing performances. This is also a great adaptation for the Gorbeau part of the book, ESPECIALLY Suzanne Nivette as Eponine, wow! What an Eponine! Probably my favorite Eponine. Same with Thenardier, both the Eponine and Thenardier in this one are tied with LM1972 for me. I also just like the... what I'll call "Theater Acting" performances I've seen in this and in the other early films I've watched since. The thick makeup. The funny expressions. The dramatic poses. All this would be considered overacting in the modern day, but to me it just feels alive. It reminds me of a lot of animations, I suppose, and that delights me. I also love love love that they didn't attempt to make big changes to the material at hand (Hell, they even touch on Waterloo in a way I thought was cool!). LM1925 and Shoujo Cosette made me realise that the longer a Les Mis adaptation is, typically the better it is to me. (with. One exception off the top of my head...) I think by the time I had watched all the other adaptations of both the novel and the musical, I had grown fatigued over the different ways films would try to condense things into 2 hours, and leave a lot on the cutting room floor (even if that usually means they focus more on the J vs JVJ aspect that I always have a weakness for), or when they try to cram everything into said 2 hours and turns it into a pacing nightmare. LM1925 avoids all that!

I feel I'm rambling on, so I'll rapid fire some stuff off. I love that they filmed in the actual msurm. I love that they kept things really grungy when the film calls for it. I love the scenes of the barricade, especially the scenes with the national guards spilling in. I love the subtle changes to the valvert side of things, it's truly one of the better adaptations for the shippers. I need to get on making some gifsets. If you love Les Mis, or just film in general, I think you owe it to yourself to watch LM1925. It's free! It's on the Internet Archive! There are download buttons or you can stream it! Please do! And tell me your thoughts on it!

what program do you use to draw?

These days, mostly Drawpile. It's a collaborative art program that isn't really """supposed""" to be used for serious stuff, but I find it very simple and comfortable drawing in it by myself. My latest Javert drawing was made entirely in a solo Drawpile 2.1.17 session using this brush:

Othewise, I just like sketching in the unmodified win10 version of MSpaint using the default pencil and eraser, like for this one and this one. I used to primarily use Paint Tool SAI ver. 2. It's very good for doing cleaner lineart in, but I sometimes get frustrated with more "complex" art programs and prefer to use simpler ones. I used SAI for this silly one here.

God I could write several essays about the subtle changes Shoujo Cosette makes to the characters of Les Mis and how massive they are for the themes of the show.......... AND MAYBE I WILL

Considering Javert spent his formative years growing up working in a naval prison where they worked on ships all day, do you think he hears sea shanties as a grown man and is just like Aw Yea

There's something poignant in the idea of Javert's mother being a fortune teller, and despite his "reservations" about his parents, Despite his (and the state's) efforts in distancing him from his family... He still uses more or less the same techniques as a fortune teller-- cold reading people at every junction, being very instinctual and following his gut, to the point where he just unflinchingly guesses that a gun pointed at him point-blank won't fire (and it doesnt?? like he's just right?? and he simply says "what did I tell you?"... THE CONFIDENCE IN HIMSELF)...

Like idk, it's interesting that in his first couple of bits of description he has, it's actually describing his parents (and firstly his mother) and then it speaks about how the animal in his very soul is a "dog-son" of a she-wolf. He is his mother's son, despite him never knowing her, despite him disliking her on principle.
